raghus··on The Netflix Zen Master
I wonder what his stats and graphs will look like on the site I started: http://feedfliks.com
raghus··on Ask HN: Are you a founder?
I started http://feedfliks.com
raghus··on Yahoo Chief: ‘We Have Never Been a Search Company’
Well, at the very minimum, Carol Bartz has framed the conversation around how Yahoo's doing and being measured differently.

Earlier, it was Google's % share of searches vs Yahoo's: a rather stark and quantitative loss every quarter and every year. Now, I'm not quite sure what it is but at the very least it is not that.

raghus··on Eight New Startups Pop Out Of The LaunchBox
I would actually enjoy reading a PG-written 1-2 sentence summary of every YC startup on demo day.
raghus··on Should I Be Worried About Scaling?
Doesn't it also depend on who 'I' am? If I am part of a tiny startup that is going to launch a twitter clone, then no, I guess not. But if I am at Facebook or Twitter or Google and I am adding a new feature to the app, then hell, yes. You will have millions of users on Day 1.
raghus··on The Trouble with the Segway
"Too lazy to walk, ya fuckin homo?" - in downtown Mountain View? Wow.

The park next to where I live (next door Sunnyvale) occasionally has Segway Polo matches. I wonder what folks will say to that.

raghus··on Ask HN: What to do when your company misses payroll?
Before an owner asks anyone to take even a temporary pay cut, he should cut his own pay to the bone. Before he misses a payroll for other people, he should have already skipped a paycheck or two.

How can you tell for sure if the owner/CEO has in fact taken a pay-cut or missed a pay period or two? I am sure they all say they've have gone without pay for 3 months already. I am asking this in all seriousness.

raghus··on I have comments, but no spam in my comments. Here’s why.
This is good! http://www.tbray.org/atompub/ouch (refresh it to see a new message)
raghus··on Skilled Immigrants on Why They're Leaving the U.S.
I've been on both sides of the employment fence and one big mental block for employers is having to go through all the legal paperwork to hire someone on a visa. As far as employment is concerned there is zero difference between a US citizen and a permanent resident so I am not persuaded that is the reason (unless it's a defense company and security clearances are a hassle for non-citizens). I can't really speak to the 'foregin' company experience though - however that's orthogonal to visa status.
raghus··on Skilled Immigrants on Why They're Leaving the U.S.
A person who can easily get a greencard in NYC can't do so in Florida. This makes the law unfair to states with lower cost-of-living ...

chime - why would it be easier to get a GC in NY as opposed to FL? How then is FL at a disadvantage because of the salary rules?

raghus··on How to Start a Software Company
At first, I wished Inc's dashboard section would also tell us exactly what Altametrics made or did. Then I went to altametrics.com's About Us page but there, I found that the BuzzWords:English ratio approaches 1 (seriously, go read it).

The best I can do is "We write software that helps restaurants become more profitable by controlling costs"

raghus··on Foursquare: Why It May Be the Next Twitter
OT, but you know you've arrived when someone else is supposed to be "the next you"
raghus··on Twitter’s Internal Strategy Laid Bare: To Be “The Pulse Of The Planet”
Over 2 Billion cellphones in the world - according to WolframAlpha (http://www06.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=cellphones+worldwide)
raghus··on Twitter’s Internal Strategy Laid Bare: To Be “The Pulse Of The Planet”
Yes, but also remember that Twitter has a lot of non-web activity that would be completely invisible to Analytics

That is quite optimistic.

Until the early 1990s, the import of gold into India was restricted by the government and there was a large delta in the price of gold within India compared to the rest of the world. As a result smuggling of gold was very profitable and most of the Bombay underworld dons were gold smugglers.

One fine day the government lifted this restriction bringing the price delta to near zero and rendering the smuggling of gold, rather a waste of time. You'd think all the baddies would now be dis-empowered. No, they just switched to extortion and whatnot and are just as powerful and rich today as they were before - just doing different things.

It's like the Willie Sutton story. Q: Why do you rob banks? A: Because that's where the money is.

These drug lords are not in the drug business because they have a particular fondness for the trade but because that's where presumably the easiest money is. If that avenue is gone, they'll try and do other things - extortion, smuggling, counterfeiting etc.

raghus··on Twitter, Even More Open Than We Wanted
OT, but given that Twitter is a potential acquisition target for Google, doesn't Twitter feel even the least bit leery of using Google Apps?
raghus··on [dead]
HN lightened up your comment
raghus··on India creating new identity card system for 1.2Bn people
Opinion piece in the Times of India: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Opinion/Columnists/SA-Aiy...
raghus··on CrunchPad Prototype
What a gorgeous digital photo frame this would make! I look forward to pointing this at a Flickr (or other) slideshow. In fact someone in another corner of the country or the world could keep this pointed at your Flickr photo stream and will be able to see your latest photos without doing a thing. Similar to what Picwing was offering.
raghus··on Ask HN: changing my site's domain name
Yes there is overlap and I'd like to go ahead and change it. I guess I should clarify that I am looking for the technical mechanics of going about doing this as efficiently as possible.
raghus··on "I never said she stole my money" has 7 different meanings depending on the stressed word
This is applicable to most sentences. For example: "Make Something People Want"
raghus··on [dead]
On NPR yesterday: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=1028518.... Worth a listen.
raghus··on Google CEO Eric Schmidt: Good or Just Lucky?
Good point, thank you.
raghus··on Google CEO Eric Schmidt: Good or Just Lucky?
Google is still basically a one-product company: Adwords. (AdSense is very successful, but far less profitable).

Are Adsense and Adwords not just two sides of the same coin? One could not exist without the other.

raghus··on Ask HN: how do you process payments?
Does anyone here on HN have experience with spreedly?
raghus··on Why mercury is forbidden aboard airplanes
So, those old-style thermometers with mercury - even that much mercury could shred an airplane?

I know knowledge is power and all that, but I almost wish I hadn't found out about this.

raghus··on Building Communities with Software
Philip Greenspun: http://philip.greenspun.com/panda/community
raghus··on Collaborative Map-Reduce in the browser
Google's server farm is rumored to be over six digits (and growing fast), which is an astounding number of machines, but how hard would it be to assemble a million people to contribute a fraction of their compute time? - maybe Google can put an optional thingy into Chrome so that users' computers can be part of their server farm?
raghus··on Jason Calacanis: What to do if your startup is about fail
Lots of big companies do this too - for example Agilent is doing this now.
