ragequittah··on DeepMind and OpenAI win gold at ICPC
It feels like half of the people I see talk about AI are still under the impression it's a spicy autocomplete. If you use a SOTA model for a week and still feel this way your bias must be very strong.
ragequittah··on Will AI be the basis of many future industrial fortunes, or a net loser?
I guess everyone's definition of good is different. The fact that an AI won an art competition [1] back in 2022 and it's now way better than that says something. I'm almost positive if you got some great AI artists and put them up against some great real artists you'd have a very hard time telling the difference / picking the winners. This is the kind of bias we're taught not to have as young children (blind hatred of x because x is bad) but I see all too often right now.

ragequittah··on Will AI be the basis of many future industrial fortunes, or a net loser?
A whole lot of what I use every day especially for images and audio is open source. The open source AI video is getting pretty good these days as well. Better than the sora that I pay for anyways. Granted not nearly as good as veo3 yet.

So long as Nvidia doesn't nerf their consumer cards and we keep getting more and more vram I can see open source competing.

ragequittah··on No adblocker detected
Easy bet that most of those people disagree with the corporation's ad (and other) practices also. I'd even bet the ones working directly in ad tech are probably the most likely to always use an ad blocker.
ragequittah··on Google can keep its Chrome browser but will be barred from exclusive contracts
Is this article investigative? Summary of the court case pdf is trivial for an LLM and most will probably do a better job than the linked article. Main difference being you won't be bombarded with ads and other nonsense (at least for now). Hell I wouldn't be surprised if the reporter had an LLM summarize the case before they wrote the article.

Content that can't be easily made by an LLM will still be worth something. But go to most news sites and their content is mostly summarization of someone else's content. LLMs may make that a hard sell.

ragequittah··on An LLM is a lossy encyclopedia
For medication guidelines I'd just do a Google search. But sometimes I want 20 sources and a quick summary of them. Agent mode or deep research is so useful. Saves me so much time every day.
ragequittah··on Google: 'Your $1000 phone needs our permission to install apps now' [video]
I believe they froze assets of the main organizers and people who were actively blocking city streets. After many warnings to discontinue the illegal activity over weeks and weeks. And they could only do it for max a month.
ragequittah··on Is 4chan the perfect Pirate Bay poster child to justify wider UK site-blocking?
People interpreting the rules as they see fit and going too far was always the plan with this kind of thing. How do you keep content from children if you don't know if they're a child? What's the alternative to getting proof of being an adult?
ragequittah··on YouTube made AI enhancements to videos without warning or permission
What's the line. If they use Microsoft word or grammarly to ease the process is that OK? Both of which use AI. Is there anyone in the world who isn't using this tech even before an editor looks at it?
ragequittah··on Is 4chan the perfect Pirate Bay poster child to justify wider UK site-blocking?
This seems like a misrepresentation of OSA more so than the parent post. It prevents people accessing content they may well need. Look at some of the subreddits being blocked if you want to see how far they go. Subs about periods, sex education, stopping smoking, suicide prevention, lgbtq. Not sure how you justify that nobody under 18 would ever have a need to access these things.

When you have to prove you're a child you have to prove you're and adult. The privacy implications of that are why it's a police state problem. It eliminates the anonymity and allows for perfect personal tracking of any wrongthink you may do.

It's also not the only thing the UK government has done to become a police state by a long shot. UK is 1984 adjacent in quite a few ways.

ragequittah··on Microsoft's latest Windows 11 24H2 update breaks SSDs/HDDs, may corrupt data
There was an NVIDIA update recently [1] that caused problems with temperatures being properly reported. Entirely software, killed some video cards. Though entirely nvidia's fault I wouldn't say it's because they make garbage hardware in any way.

It seems increasingly these problems (including the NVIDIA one) are only cropping up on 24H2 machines which is why I've decided to stick with 23H2 until it's out of its support window. Unfortunately that's coming up pretty soon.

ragequittah··on Claude Code is all you need
>no trust in it for anything that isn't easy/simple/solved

I'm not sure what part of programming isn't generally solved thousands of times over for most languages out there. I'm only using it for lowly web development but I can tell you that it can definitely do it at a level that surprises me. It's not just "auto-complete" it's actually able to 'think' over code I've broken or code that I want improved and give me not just one but multiple paths to make it better.

ragequittah··on Performance and telemetry analysis of Trae IDE, ByteDance's VSCode fork
I think the thing you neglect when having setups like this is that you start to garner interest from law enforcement if they ever come across you. You're trying so hard to cover your tracks that you stand out very clearly in a crowd.

There's a middle ground between living deep in the woods without windows and walking around naked in public.

ragequittah··on Performance and telemetry analysis of Trae IDE, ByteDance's VSCode fork
It's not nihilism. I still ad block, use an RFID wallet, and don't install any apps on my phone, I rarely use google for anything. But at some point when something is so ridiculously useful and the data they're getting doesn't really mean much of anything I have to stop caring. I use Windows 11 (gross) because it lets me play video games with my friends I can't otherwise. I use Uber because it lets me get across town. I use Visual Studio because it helps me code. I use Chatgpt because it helps me with so many things. To take away any one of those because I'm a privacy absolutist seems silly to me. It has the exact same vibe of never leaving your room because you're afraid of all the cameras.

I'd like there to be a push back against these companies because I find their practices disgusting but running linux with only open source software and a fairphone is just an extreme I'm unwilling to entertain because it's just not possible in my (or most people's) world.

ragequittah··on Performance and telemetry analysis of Trae IDE, ByteDance's VSCode fork
As a somewhat paranoid person I find this level of paranoia beyond me. Like do you own a car? Or a phone? A credit card? Walk around in public where there's cameras on every block? I don't agree with it at all but the world we're living it makes it impossible to not be tracked with way more than (usually anonymized) telemetry data.
ragequittah··on I tried vibe coding in BASIC and it didn't go well
This is easily solved by feeding the LLM the correct documentation. I was having problems with tailwind because of this right up until I had ChatGPT deep research come up with a spec sheet on how to use the latest version of it. Fed it into the various AIs I've been using (worked for ChatGPT, Claude, and Cursor) and no problems since.
ragequittah··on I tried vibe coding in BASIC and it didn't go well
You could very likely train an AI (llama?) to easily do this but trying to get a general LLM to play a game such as this doesn't make sense. Best way to get around it? Have it create a python program that will play the game correctly instead.
ragequittah··on Anticheat Update Tracking
You just dual boot. Windows is a joke itself even without the anticheat shenanigans so I use it like a toy. Any real work gets done in Luks encrypted Linux inaccessible to the Chinese company with a rootkit in my windows. Hopefully.
ragequittah··on Fandom sells gaming media brand Giant Bomb to long-term staff
I'll admit that I stopped looking at reddit for most game content lately (last year or 2) so my opinion might be outdated. But I do remember the new Assassin's Creed getting quite a lot of hate for gross reasons. It becomes oddly political much like many subs for TV shows and movies. Misogyny and racism are rampant.

That said I suppose if good moderators filter the rabble out there's bound to be some good communities. I just find that if you love a game it's usually best to steer well clear of the subreddit for it.

ragequittah··on Fandom sells gaming media brand Giant Bomb to long-term staff
I find reddit to be so hypercritical of everything to the point of it not being useful anymore. A very good 9/10 game will get so much criticism you'd think it's the worst game to be released in a decade.
ragequittah··on We Have Made No Progress Toward AGI
I think the last few years are a good example of how this isn't really true. Covid came around and everyone became an epidemiologist and public health expert. The people in charge of the US government right now are also a perfect example. RFK Jr. is going to get to the bottom of autism. Trump is ruining the world economy seemingly by himself. Hegseth is in charge of the most powerful military in the world. Humans pretending they know what they're doing is a giant problem.
ragequittah··on Microsoft Confirms Password Deletion for 1B Users
I lost my yubikey once. There are always ways to recover your accounts, and it's especially easy for ones you're already signed into on multiple devices.
ragequittah··on Zen: Firefox Based Browser
This was such a mild thing that got so much pushback (meaning they won't do it again) that it makes me trust them more, not less. A disabled plug in that when enabled didn't really even do anything, compared to insert what any other browser does.
ragequittah··on Meta removes Trump account restrictions ahead of 2024 election
"Anyone that wants an abortion can just fly to a liberal state for one as long as at least 1 liberal state still exists."

Let me just take time off work book a hotel and buy a plane ticket when I can't even afford rent.

ragequittah··on Sam Altman's under pressure amid questions about OpenAI's commitment to safety
I do think so far the internet is a net negative, yes. People's brains have been rewired to have less attention span, more outrage, more instant dopamine hits they don't have to work for, and just generally we're in an era where instead of learning anything people spend time watching 10 second videos. "But I learn a lot from tiktok/instagram" is the most depressing sentence I've heard in a long time.

There are positives to it, but none of them matter if the current trends don't change. We're headed into an authoritarian / populist hellscape worldwide, with leaders who will ignore climate change and every other problem that is existential, while probably creating some of their own. And while all this is happening we have a population that has their head so far into social media they're more worried about transgender identity politics than the world literally burning down around them.

I'm not hopeful for the future, and most of it is because of what the internet has done to our culture.

ragequittah··on Sam Altman's under pressure amid questions about OpenAI's commitment to safety
My honest opinion is that the people (30-50% of the population?) voting for authoritarians like Trump, Orban, Bolsonaro, Meloni, Bukele, Ergodan, etc are not at all in Solidarity with what I'll call "the rest of us". From the ones I've spoken to there's legitimately a theme of wanting the chaos that these people bring to the world. Sticking a wrench in society for fun and profit.

And what I'm talking about isn't everyone having a single set of beliefs, that would be absurd. It's bad actors spreading what they know to be misinformation, and people falling hook line and sinker for the false rhetoric because it's repeated so often. People like Tucker Carlson who privately says Trump is a massive evil, publicly praises him. Or Russian troll farms that just constantly post the most controversial takes on social media until they become normalized.

What used to be a fringe group of conspiracy theorists that read rags like "The National Inquirer" and believed it has exploded because it's easy to make a website/podcast/twitter handle that looks legit and spreads like wildfire.

ragequittah··on Sam Altman's under pressure amid questions about OpenAI's commitment to safety
gestures broadly. Half of the world has an entirely different set of facts than the other half. As a society (the medical / scientific community is at a near consensus) we still can't agree on whether a vaccine works, or whether masks can slow the spread of a virus. The sheer amount of bad actors spreading wildly bogus information is astonishing.
ragequittah··on Tax the Rich Is a Popular Bipartisan Stance, Poll Shows
Look around you. I'm sure someone making 400k/yr has been to a restuarant / bar in the last week, after all they're pretty well off. How do these people that are making less than 50k per year, many also probably going to school, renting houses owned by people with 400k/yr salary, get by if even the people with 400k/yr "can't"?

You must realize even the people I'm describing here are also actually in the top % of the world, and the extra taxes any government would ask of you would barely even help them. There's about 5-10 rungs below the poor people I'm describing that need desprate help. And the idea of someone losing 30k in taxes a year because they have to own a 2 million dollar home instead of a 3 million dollar home is so absurd to the person deciding between school books for their kid or an extra 1 lb of protein for a decent meal.

ragequittah··on Tax the Rich Is a Popular Bipartisan Stance, Poll Shows
But I just outlined how to be more rich than almost anyone in the country, in both real estate and disposable income available to you, with 40 seconds of thought. Maybe you can't own a 2.9 million dollar home on 400k, but you could own multiple of the homes most of us are looking for without blinking. Able to be a landlord at any point and charge rent to pay off a mortgage on a 400k home for you. Do that 3 or 4 times and you have your 2.9 million. Maybe even spend many people's annual salary to have someone take care of those properties as rentals for a few years amd/or renovate them, because that barely puts in a dent in the pocketbook.

400k is far more freedom than most people could ever dream of.

ragequittah··on Tax the Rich Is a Popular Bipartisan Stance, Poll Shows
In a decade of that income one could own a house (or 3) in a different town or state, fly in once a week to live in a typical apartment rental someone making 50k-70k might rent, and still have money left over for a boat or whatever else. Absurd to say someone isn't objectively rich making $400k.
