I'll never understand this attitude. Recently I set up a full network with 5 computers, opnsense, xcp-ng and a few things like a pi, switch, AP, etc.

I was migrating from pfsense to Opnsense so I wasn't too familiar with some of the nitty gritty. Was migrating to xcp-ng 8.3 from 8.2 which has some major CLI differences. It was a pretty big migration that took me a full weekend.

OpenAI got things wrong (mostly because it was using old documentation - opnsense had just upgraded) maybe 8 times in the whole project and was able to quickly correct itself when I elaborated on the problem.

If I just had google this would've been a 2 week project easily. I'd have to drudge through extremely dry documentation that mostly doesn't apply to anything I'm doing. Would have to read a bunch of toxic threads demeaning users who don't know everything. Instead I had chatgpt 5 do all that for me and got to the exact same result with a tenth of the effort.

The AI is useless crowd truly makes me scratch my head.

Those same people who will save $4.50 by using the reusable bags also wouldn't think of paying for delivery. And the reusable bags are much more likely to be recycled or used for other purposes.

But also where I am people deliver 100% in boxes. That's an easy enough way to solve it. Also makes the delivery of a heavy load easier because you just drop the box on a dolly or similar.

ragequittah··on What OpenAI did when ChatGPT users lost touch with reality
Would it be better if someone were to gamify the needs like video game romance? Seems easy enough to do.

Curious does the ultra popular romance book genre many women use to feel things they aren't getting from men around them bother you?

ragequittah··on What OpenAI did when ChatGPT users lost touch with reality
There's a large swath of people who try desperately to get the practice you speak of and end up with none or worse. We're biological beings we all try pretty hard to connect. Many just get broken down to the point where trying to connect is more painful than avoiding it.

I personally don't ever see a chatbot ever being a substitute for myself but can certainly empathize with those who do.

ragequittah··on What OpenAI did when ChatGPT users lost touch with reality
If you have 100 men to 100 women on an imaginary tinder platform and most of the men get rejected by all 100 women it's easy to see where the problem would arise for women too.
ragequittah··on Three Years from GPT-3 to Gemini 3
I bet they were talking about how people didn't do long division when the calculator first came out too. Is using matlab and excel ok but AI not? Where do we draw the line with tools?
ragequittah··on Three Years from GPT-3 to Gemini 3
Other countries have better outcomes. I doubt it's just because of the genetics.
ragequittah··on Show HN: Stun LLMs with thousands of invisible Unicode characters
The most amazing thing about LLMs is how often they can do what people are yelling they can't do.
ragequittah··on 'Invisible' microplastics spread in skies as global pollutant
This seems obvious to me why the heavier bags are better. They don't immediately blow away to the ocean or wherever else. We're also charged $1.50 for them where I am or you get a paper bag so people who want to save $4.50+ on a grocery run (which is a ton of people) will bring their own.
ragequittah··on McDonald's is losing its low-income customers
You can get good enough cookware for the price of a couple of McDonald's meals too. We don't all need $100 pots and pans. I feel like the people arguing that cooking is a giant obstacle can't be doing it in good faith. Watch a YouTube video and throw a couple of eggs in a $10 pan already.
ragequittah··on WorldGen – Text to Immersive 3D Worlds
Interesting example because no man's sky is by all accounts an extremely good game now. And the developers next game with tons of procedural generation is very highly anticipated.

This is what the wow bots were. They had a crazy level of agency even without AI.
ragequittah··on GPT-5.1: A smarter, more conversational ChatGPT
Whenever I read something like this I do definitely think "you're using it wrong". This question would've certainly tripped up earlier models but new ones have absolutely no issue making this with sources for each question. Example:

https://chatgpt.com/share/69160c9e-b2ac-8001-ad39-966975971a...

(the 7 minutes thinking is because ChatGPT is unusually slow right now for any question)

These days I'd trust it to accurately give 100 questions only about Homer. LLMs really are quite a lot better than they used to be by a large margin if you use them right.

I don't judge people for it necessarily but I sometimes wonder if they have the wrong idea about what games are. There definitely are problem games that are essentially gambling addictions manifest so the stigma is sometimes warranted. If you sit around playing the same dungeon in a Diablo game 8 hours a day trying to get an item that raises your power 0.5% you're probably off the deep end. But playing something like Clair Obscur or Elden Ring gives me a very unique experience that eventually ends. And the game ending / not wasting your time too much tends to be criteria I use when choosing games as well.

If you look back on that time of low self-esteem and a crappy life I bet there was a myriad of other things causing it and games were just your drug of choice for 'dealing' with it. At least that's my experience. And IMO if your life avoidance drug is games instead of almost anything else (alcohol, marijuana, etc.) you're probably doing better than most in such a situation.

"It's all just pixels on a screen" isn't really an argument for me because my work life, much of my social life, and almost every other form of entertainment that isn't video games (including what I'm doing right now) is all just pixels on a screen as well. And playing games with friends that are across the country or a few hours away is absolutely the best way to be social with them possible. Hell even when I go on vacation I make damn sure I capture pixels on a screen to look at later.

ragequittah··on GLP-1 therapeutics: Their emerging role in alcohol and substance use disorders
Fully agreed when it starts interfering with your life you should reassess as with anything. But honestly I see gaming as a further place to connect with kids if you enjoy them. Something like Animal Crossing, Mario Kart/Party or Jackbox Party Pack can be some of the best bonding experiences out there. And it also lets you teach your kids how to have a healthy relationship with games/dopamine.

It depends on degrees. If you're going to lose your job and your wife is about to leave you stop doing it. If you just did 12 hours of work/chores/put the kids to bed and want to relax with a bit of gaming? Some people would still feel guilty but I haven't a clue why.

ragequittah··on GLP-1 therapeutics: Their emerging role in alcohol and substance use disorders
If it works for you keep it up. As someone who finds video games an art form I find the 'avoidance to do better things' quite similar to someone who might avoid reading or watching movies as a hobby.

I suppose if you just play the same game day in and day out and it has no real substance (which admittedly is probably the largest gaming segment) it might be a good thing to get rid of the habit. But some games are masterpieces and they often hit very different than other mediums because you are the protagonist making choices. In my opinion some of the best stories come in the form of games and I find it a real shame there's a portion of the population who think they're a complete waste of time.

I think there's also something to be said here about being addicted to work. I know such people and it's just as sad even if it's what society expects of them.

ragequittah··on Claude Memory
This is pretty much exactly how I use it with Chatgpt. I get to ask very sloppy questions now and it already knows what distros and setups I'm using. "I'm having x problem on my laptop" gets me the exact right troubleshooting steps 99% of the time. Can't count the amount of time it's saved me googling or reading man pages for that 1 thing I forgot.
ragequittah··on ChatGPT Atlas
Given that most of society already uses chrome with Google search on their adware ridden android phones it's not much of a change from that.
ragequittah··on ChatGPT Atlas
My take: if you do it correctly you're a very small minority of people and most would probably be concerned at your level of paranoia if you told them every detail of your setup. Turns out opsec is pretty difficult to achieve. Also unless you're a criminal you're probably wasting a lot of time for no real gain.

I use a pihole, ublock, a vpn for some devices, and I'm using my own OPNSense router w/ very strict settings. The amount of privacy I think I have from all that is next to nothing if someone were actually interested in what I was doing. I'd probably just get one of my boxes shelled and that's the end of that. Mostly what I'm trying to do is block 1) Some for the lulz Russian teenager 2) the shady ad networks hoovering up everything all the time and 3) my IoT devices like TVs and Hue light bulbs from ever accessing any part of the rest of my network.

You'll also notice that darkweb criminals are getting caught more and more frequently these days because governments have decided to no longer tolerate it. I feel bad for you if you're in a ransomware gang these days.

ragequittah··on ChatGPT Atlas
I'm not so sure this is much worse than Chrome. Really in today's world if you're not browsing the web like multiple people are looking over your shoulder you're probably doing it wrong. And most of the steps people do to mitigate privacy violations (TOR, pihole, VPNs, etc.) probably make any signal you do put out more scrutinized. The one solution I do like is the iCloud private relay which I hope some reputable VPN vendors pick up soon.
ragequittah··on Claude Code vs. Codex: I built a sentiment dashboard from Reddit comments
This is my experience as well. Codex is very verbose which is annoying considering the limits. My work flow tends to be have Claude code describe the problem (succinct as it can) based on my mashing of the keyboard description of what I want done then send that to codex. I've tried it the other way around doesn't work nearly as good. Disclaimer: not using the 5 prompts per week opus.
ragequittah··on A cartoonist's review of AI art, by Matthew Inman
The idea that you can't both use AI heavily and use thinking, make choices, and use experience is the part I think I disagree with. People sometimes use AI to make thoughtless slop, that doesn't mean everyone does.

I think we're going to come into contact with brilliant projects that people have spent years making and there would just be no way they could've done them without AI. It will be a human thinking it through making thousands of choices just like the OP said about Jurassic Park. You can and basically have to guide the AI like crazy to get any output worthwhile.

ragequittah··on A cartoonist's review of AI art, by Matthew Inman
Neither. And this is another bias I keep seeing. Anyone who actually uses the technology in the way I do must be using it to write (I don't) or a shill. Nope I just have been using it for various things since the early days and I wonder why people are so allergic to being able to express themselves clearer and with more agency. Not everything has to be about money. LLMs and image generators can just be fun.

I like that my writing is considered well structured / grammatically correct enough to be llm worthy though. I often think I make several obvious errors when I write off the cuff internet posts (and probably did).

ragequittah··on A cartoonist's review of AI art, by Matthew Inman
People being able to express their imaginations in a more clear manner always seems like a net positive to me. You can use it without heart and for the exact wrong reasons for sure.

The keyboard example is telling because that's basically what a bunch of our favorite musicians now do. The drum track for that song you're listening to? That's a piece of software not drums.

ragequittah··on A cartoonist's review of AI art, by Matthew Inman
I find there is often very much a why with lots of the AI art I see. I often use it to try and visualize a dream I or one of my friends had. When I get the prompt just right it's sometimes striking how close I get to what I was seeing.

My friends will often use it for humorous situations that are happening to us in the moment. Overexagerations or putting one of us in a crazy situation. That's about as meaningful as using a gif keyboard, sure, but it gets a pretty good laugh out of me sometimes. There are recurring ones that have become a type of shorthand for us.

I've used it for highly personalized Christmas cards and anniversary invites for other people that they just otherwise would never have made because they don't have $500 to pay an artist and Clipart is too impersonal to bother with.

I've turned my mother's drawing into a beautiful realistic picture that she absolutely adored. I turned a baby picture from decades ago into a movie of a kid laughing which made my mother instinctively grab the phone from my hand with a big grin.

To me AI art is only about the why. It brings entertainment, comfort, hilarity and agency. I would never charge anybody for it I'm just doing it because I find it a neat set of tools to mess around with. And the tools aren't just asking chatgpt to make something. You can spend months refining the craft of it similar to learning something like Photoshop.

ragequittah··on Who owns Express VPN, Nord, Surfshark? VPN relationships explained (2024)
One others seem to have missed 3. ad blocking on your phone away from home. Almost all VPNs have a block ads / known malicious traffic function. This can be done with just a DNS but often mobile carriers will block using your own DNS.

Not commenting code seems like the most unhinged thing I can think of. We don't need blueprints to build this building gestures broadly isn't it obvious to the construction workers where to put everything?
