rafaelm··on Pentium II at 600Mhz with Voodoo 3 Emulated on 86Box with M6 Mac Mini
Yessss...I got a friend who went on vacation to the US to bring back a Voodoo (2,I think?). I played a lot of Quake 1 and I remember playing online and seeing the water transparency and my rivals underwater...good times.
rafaelm··on DeepSeek Introduces Vision
I believe this is the correct link. I use it too in Handy, for English and Spanish transcriptions: https://huggingface.co/nvidia/parakeet-tdt-0.6b-v3
rafaelm··on Microsoft account bugs locked me out of Notepad – Are thin clients ruining PCs?
I'm no windows fanboy and I don't doubt your experience, but I honestly don't understand how this can happen. I recently did three clean Win 11 reinstalls and I was done in an hour. Maybe because I did it on slightly older hardware...
rafaelm··on A closer look at a BGP anomaly in Venezuela
This is CANTV they are talking about. This is the company I requested a new phone line from and it took 9.5 years to get it installed.

After waiting for 3 years, I gave up ended up paying one of their technicians I randomly found working in the street. He gave me a phone line that apparently used to belong to a taxi company, judging by all the wrong number calls I got. All that just to get 4mbps DSL service in 2019.

Last year, out of nowhere, I finally got a call from the company saying they were ready to install it.

Thankfully, a bunch of companies appeared out of nowhere (a lot of them with links to people in the govt, surprise) in 2020 and we got fiber.

Oh and a couple of years ago, my parents "lost" their phone line and have been without POTS ever since. Maybe it's karma for me paying for a phone line all those years ago...

rafaelm··on Ask HN: How Do I Get over My Existential Crisis?
It's 100x more difficult than you think it is. I come from a "semi-sanctioned" country, and it's extremely hard. Opening a bank account is impossible unless you can travel to the US. Stripe won't touch you with a 100 foot pole.

I can't even imagine how hard it would be from Iraq, even if it's currently "not sanctioned" in theory.

rafaelm··on How to rig elections [video]
See also the last presidential elections in Venezuela, where they did not even bother to pretend they did not steal the election, even under overwhelming evidence. A year later, we are still waiting for the official ballots.

That's almost the final level. The final level would be not even holding elections...

rafaelm··on I was wrong about robots.txt
There are cases where Google might find a URL blocked in robots.txt (through external or internal links), and the page can still be indexed and show up in the search results, even if they can't crawl it. [1].

The only way to be sure that it will stay out of the results is to use a noindex tag. Which, as you mentioned, search engine bots need to "read" in the code. If the URL is blocked, the "noindex" cannot be read.

rafaelm··on I wrote to the address in the GPLv2 license notice (2022)
Probably because in our countries (I'm also from S.America) the reliability of the post office is questionable at best, so it wasn't something I ever really used.
rafaelm··on Suspicious data pattern in recent Venezuelan election
It's cne.gob.ve, and that doesn't work either. They want us to believe that because the website is down, the whole system that counts the votes is down. Hey, maybe the votes are counted in WordPress...
rafaelm··on Suspicious data pattern in recent Venezuelan election
Hinterlaces is a government linked company, not exactly impartial.
rafaelm··on Suspicious data pattern in recent Venezuelan election
Calling Hinterlaces "the most respected" is quiiiite a stretch. The owner Oscar Schemel, frequently parrots the govt propaganda talking points ("it's the evil empire, there's no inflation it's sabotage etc)
rafaelm··on Linus Tech Tips channel hacked
A lot of YouTube channels are getting hacked recently with the same "sponsorship offer" hack. Wonder if this was the case here as well.

rafaelm··on You Can Forget About Crypto Now
As a caracan myself, it's actually "caraqueños" :)

Regarding the subject, it is indeed very popular. You can go to restaurants, car parts stores and clothing stores and find the Binance QR code prominently displayed.

And a LOT of freelancers working online have no way of receiving payments from abroad other than through Binance (verifying Paypal here because of currency controls). No one wants to receive the local currency.

I wouldn't say that you'll see grandmothers in the grocery store buying stuff with USDT, but it's definitely used.

rafaelm··on Why are so many babies born around 8:00 AM? (2017)
I don't know about the other numbers, but my wife has had two scheduled c-sections and the recovery for both suuucked when compared to everyone we know that had natural birth.

Of course, the process of going through labor pains for many hours might make things even between the two...

rafaelm··on Expanding access to the future of work with crypto payouts
Yep that's it. I just didn't want it to look like I was shilling something in the comments :)

Locally, Binance P2P is used a lot for remittances, and plenty of establishments use it as a way to receive payments as well. I've seen the Binance QR code in a bunch of restaurants and autoparts stores, for example

I used it earlier this year to send money to my sister in Argentina. Super fast, no fuss.

rafaelm··on Expanding access to the future of work with crypto payouts
From my own experience, you can use a very popular exchange that has a huge P2P marketplace, precisely for this.
rafaelm··on As TikTok grows, so does suspicion
I'm currently living the dictatorship in Venezuela. Ask me if you think Ciro's opinion is not valid, for whatever reason. (Don't know him btw. Epale Ciro!)
rafaelm··on Florida Tech CEO Indicted for Selling $1B Worth of Counterfeit Cisco Equipment
Regarding your question, I believe it's mostly down to corruption basically. Local businesses have huge markups because they have to deal with theft, paying off customs officials even if they have all the paperwork etc as well as the taxes. As others have mentioned, these freight forwarders have figured out ways to get around that, probably with more bribing, not paying import taxes etc. It's a never ending corruption cycle and the customers are part of it.
rafaelm··on Florida Tech CEO Indicted for Selling $1B Worth of Counterfeit Cisco Equipment
Oh don't get me wrong, I totally understand your point as a seller. What's weird to me is that the seller gets blamed, even after the shipment is marked as delivered by UPS/Amazon logistics or whatever company was used to drop it off in Miami.

Unfortunately, I'm very familiar with the scamming culture around these parts as well:/

rafaelm··on Florida Tech CEO Indicted for Selling $1B Worth of Counterfeit Cisco Equipment
I understand where you are coming from, but most of the time that's the only way people that live in south or central America can buy stuff online at decent prices. It's cheaper for me to pay the shipping fees to my country than it is to buy stuff here.

I use a freight forwarder to do most of my online shopping through Amazon, ebay and lots of other stores. I've bought everything from phones, TVs and even a standing desk.

It's a huge industry here. If you go to any warehouse district in Miami near the airport you'll find a bunch of these companies.

As a sidenote, I did some small development work for a friend that owns one of these companies. He was running a smallish operation and was making some good money.

There's a couple of software solutions for tracking, billing, ,support and CRM for those types of companies and they are absolutely abismal. There, I gave someone a business idea :)

I would like to know how you came up with these, they're pretty good.

rafaelm··on Invade Haiti, Wall Street Urged. The U.S. Obliged
The sanctions on Venezuela have nothing to do with nationalization. Our oil industry was nationalized in 1976.
rafaelm··on Ask HN: What do Russians on HN think about this war?
> The talks like "let's hurt the regular people so they revolt against Putin"

As someone that comes from a sanctioned country, this is one important thing that most people that have never lived a similar situation don't understand:

-When you live in an authoritarian regime, you don't just "revolt" and topple the autocrat. In our case, it has cost a LOT of innocent lives in the streets protesting. Autocrats don't mind killing as many of their own citizens as they have to, to stay in power.

-The sanctions are usually paid for by the population. In our case, while the sanctions were certainly "inconvenient" to the government, most of the effects where on the regular people. Government cronies have no problem getting food, gasoline, etc. This then gives the autocrat the excuse: "Look, it's them causing this. I'm here to defend you from the bad imperialist sanctions.

Now, I'm not saying I know what the solution is, and I certainly get a lot of satisfaction in seeing that my local autocrats cannot travel freely with their ill-gotten gains and seeing yachts being confiscated all over the world. But it's my opinion that most of the time, sanctions affect a population that has very little power to do something about the situation.

That being said, in Russia's case, being very heavily constrained economically does throw a spanner in the gears of the war machine. Not sure how it's going to play out, but I bet Putin would rather see his people starve first before limiting the military funding of this.

rafaelm··on In Argentina, inflation is a way of life
Venezuelan here: I have personally bought tuna and flour by the case as a way of hedging against inflation and scarcity. Of course, this last factor was the most important.
rafaelm··on Spotify is removing Neil Young’s music after falling out over Joe Rogan
I used to listen to the podcast a lot before it went to Spotify. While Rogan is a self-admitted "ignorant", it was that aspect that made his interviews interesting and enjoyable. He always had guests of all types and beliefs.

Unfortunately, it seems that the pandemic has thrown him into a conspiracy hole. I think the whole thing started with one of the Weinstein brothers and the ivermectin push and it just went downhill from there...

rafaelm··on Doctors call out Spotify for letting Joe Rogan spread ‘false and harmful’ claims
Same here. I used to listen to a lot of episodes and he had super interesting conversations. But the whole covid situation really sent him off the deep end. And the more the "establishment" tries to push back, the more he's digging in.

The last Rhonda Patrick episode was specially hard to watch. I guess it's the last time she's going to be on.

I'm listening more to Lex Fridman these days, even though he's had Weinstein on recently...

rafaelm··on Ask HN: What do you think about the no-code movement?
I invite you to take a look at the world of AI writers that are currently flooding the market.

I've seen massive sites with hundreds of thousands of crappy ai articles getting a LOT of traffic.

rafaelm··on Home Lab Hardware Guide
I was hunting the 8 port switch for a while. I had to setup my own stock monitoring with alerts and managed to catch one that way.
rafaelm··on FDA Approves First Covid-19 Vaccine
Can confirm, lots of people from my country have been traveling to Miami to get the shot. Some go for 10 days to get the Johnson shot (single dose), because they can't/don't want to spend a month for the two doses.

According to what I've heard, you can just walk into any Walgreens/pharmacy to get it, without paying or getting an ID check.

Not sure how legal that is though. I understand that those should be for tax-paying citizens.

rafaelm··on AWS adds an extra 5.5M IPv4 addresses
Yep, I was wondering more about the ongoing costs of "operating" the block. I was reading a superuser.com question [1] about it and it mentions ongoing costs, like transit, BGP routing etc.

This is super interesting! I didn't know this was even possible before I started looking into it.
