rafaelgoncalves··on Afrika Bambaataa, hip-hop pioneer, has died
this surprised me as well, the more you know the respect for his influence diminishes, really sad.
rafaelgoncalves··on I ported Mac OS X to the Nintendo Wii
awesome work and write up! hella impressive!
rafaelgoncalves··on Veracrypt project update
wow, didn't know about this, i developed some drivers and had this test mode enabled to debug some aspects of it, but now it is almost unusable with this on screen.
rafaelgoncalves··on Opera: Rewind The Web to 1996 (Opera at 30)
or an ad blocker, here i had to disable to load the cookies consent window. On Firefox worked better for me here, Chrome had some lag.
rafaelgoncalves··on Astral to Join OpenAI
:D, and i think they would add some optout telemetry flags too to make this even funnier
rafaelgoncalves··on Employee commits suicide after MongoDB fired her during mental health leave
so sad, hope the family get some kind of closure (never will be enough with an lost life)
rafaelgoncalves··on MongoDB Server Security Update, December 2025
on postgres I can update a field easily and atomically with transactions (or there is something I don't know about?), like (postgresql 14)[0]:

   UPDATE users SET profile = profile || '{"lastname":"Washington"}' WHERE profile->>'name' = 'George Washington';

rafaelgoncalves··on The post-GeForce era: What if Nvidia abandons PC gaming?
so nice memories, and the same occurred to me, but was writing macros and hotkeys for Ragnarok Online (in Pascal/Delphi and VB/6)
rafaelgoncalves··on Migrating Dillo from GitHub
got here to comment on that, hella impressive and looks so simple and clean.
rafaelgoncalves··on Cap'n Web: a new RPC system for browsers and web servers

rafaelgoncalves··on 29 years later, Settlers II gets Amiga release

rafaelgoncalves··on Systemd has been a complete, utter, unmitigated success
I switched to Void Linux, have been great so far.
rafaelgoncalves··on Systemd has been a complete, utter, unmitigated success
i have the same sentiment, and for me systemd was getting so slow and hard to tshoot (the tools to analyze boot graphs and sequence showed service sequence breakage, some times there is no problem, sometimes sequence changed and problem happened) and i just changed for another distro without systemd and boom, startup in seconds no problem at all.
rafaelgoncalves··on Show HN: VSCan - Detect Malicious VSCode Extensions
lol, so true, and that both are really good malware attack vectors (chrome/vscode extensions, etc.)
rafaelgoncalves··on Display any CSV file as a searchable, filterable, pretty HTML table
the creator even acknowledged the risk in the sample... but i do not understand why not create a more secure sample first time? since people will absolutely copy to test.
rafaelgoncalves··on An update on Mozilla's terms of use for Firefox
totally agree and i have this same feeling. An the fact they provide this "updates" and doubling down the same points is unnerving.
rafaelgoncalves··on Show HN: One year of bewCloud (a simpler Nextcloud alternative)
ohh, nice! thanks for the info Bruno!
rafaelgoncalves··on Show HN: One year of bewCloud (a simpler Nextcloud alternative)
yeah, docker and permissions always a pain. you tried passing --user or through compose? [1]:

  my-service:
    image: ubuntu:latest
    user: ${MY_UID}:${MY_GID}
    volumes:
      - /etc/passwd:/etc/passwd:ro
      - /etc/group:/etc/group:ro

rafaelgoncalves··on Marginalia – A search engine that prioritizes non-commercial content
whoa, didn't know this project, looks really incredible, will add to my others search engines and give a try, thanks for the devs/creators and hope for success to you all!
rafaelgoncalves··on Show HN: Sourcebot, an open-source Sourcegraph alternative
yeah, github has a nice search now, the only complaint is that you need to be logged on to use, besides this is really nice.
rafaelgoncalves··on Show HN: A CLI tool I made to self-host any app with two commands on a VPS
This really looks nice! Congrats!
rafaelgoncalves··on Microsoft's 'Recall' feature can't be uninstalled after all
same thing with the Edge browser for me, i have to remove on every update (he has so much telemetry that is a burden, same with other parts of the SO). This is a testament on the philosophy change between all those years, i used so much win95/98/xp that i loved, the times were so simple...
rafaelgoncalves··on Mpv – A free, open-source, and cross-platform media player
Like anothers comments said, mpv has some awesome native hw decoding and you can play frame by frame, previous and next, vlc you can only do next [1] (awesome thread btw). :) And mpc/mpc-hc is discontinued [2].

rafaelgoncalves··on Mpv – A free, open-source, and cross-platform media player
mpv tries to be pretty minimalist (and does this well), you could try a frontend (Celluloid, Haruna, etc.). And for the commandline, when you install the mpv package, depending on the distro, the package creates a default shortcut/desktop file, so you can open videos on your WM without hitches, on the menu bar. You can associate the shortcut to mime/file types and set as default player too. You can create yourself a desktop file too if necessary on your profile (eg: $HOME/.local/share/applications/mpv.desktop) with this file/content [1]

rafaelgoncalves··on PyScript: An open source platform for Python in the browser
did you use the in browser or another external task manager? most pages without videos or some kind of gpu process uses 20~30 MB here (like hacker news for example).
rafaelgoncalves··on Google pulls the plug on uBlock Origin
suspect, but susceptible on this case
rafaelgoncalves··on Google pulls the plug on uBlock Origin
yeah, this was expected when they nerfed uBlock (and various other extensions) with the manifest v3. Using another alternatives is the way now for me too, like other comments, using Firefox.
rafaelgoncalves··on Linux for UX Designers: What I learn after a year of doing design work on Linux
nice article, thanks for this. It's great to know that linux increased usability in another areas beyond software development.
rafaelgoncalves··on Show HN: Dut – a fast Linux disk usage calculator
