radres··on Videos show Turkey's Erdogan boasted letting builders avoid earthquake codes
Article is wrong when it is saying "emerged videos fueled outrage". It didn't. It won't.

Here is what is going to happen. The upcoming elections in May is going to be postponed, at least a year or however long it is necessary to make people forget what happened. If I know his voters, they'll forget it in couple of months.

radres··on Twitter restricted in Turkey in aftermath of earthquake
As a Turkish person, seeing people tweet under rubbles, hardly breathing but found some space to tweet their full address, THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE. And THIS IS MURDER.

There are still people who are alive under rubbles with still some charge left on their phone. Twitter proved to be one of the most effective ways to communicate how severe their situation was.

radres··on Looking for the best Chess960 starting position
"Stockfish evaluation do not predict actual winrates"

I think Stockfish evaluation gives the best answer here because people do not sit and study that very starting position. If starting position was always set to be what stockfish said to have the highest chance, there would be much more theory written on that start position hence more winrate.

radres··on I failed three job applications, here's what I learned
What it says on a contract does not make it enforceable. Original question is asking "if it is enforceable".
radres··on Show HN: I made a pretty relaxing puzzle game
I like the ideal number of clicks. But somewhat agree on sky etc. should come in order.
radres··on Launch HN: Unthread (YC S22) – Customer support, entirely within Slack
What's wrong with slack search? I generally can find what I am looking for?
radres··on Chem Lab Made Me a Better Dev
It was a great story until I read something about telling engineers what line of code to change. That is micromanagement and lack of delegation.
radres··on We don't do that here (2017)
I completely agree. This answer should be the last resort in situations just like mentioned in the article.

But when the situation is completely different, if a new comer is a new grad joining the company and "that" behavior is just a mild disagreement, this wording should 100% be avoided and only should be used if you would like to cut ties with the person.

radres··on Contributing to WebSockets – Cryptocurrency Users
When people are sending money through crypto (in this case bitcoin) they bid a certain amount for their transaction to be picked up. If they are paying 50 USD per transaction and people are actually booting up machines to pick up this transaction I believe I do not have anything to say to the business going between these two people.

Are these "planet is heating" people going around telling people not to have idle appliances plugged in? Not to use bigger cars if not necessary? If BMW was using websockets in one of their huge SUVs would you not help them?

just feels childish and lacking logic

radres··on No minimum parking requirements? No problem for Fayetteville, Arkansas
Oh, those ugly looking parking spaces in front of every business was an enforced thing in the US?
radres··on I Just Lost 1,400 BTC (2020)
"Often" word is used because it also covers the case of small transactions. As transactions get bigger, systems get slower. I have had personal phone calls from bank to ensure I wanted to send big sum of money.
radres··on Startups now spend more on Airbnb than on office rent
In Europe, worked in couple of countries. All the employers had the right to force you to take vacation at a certain date I have never seen it done. I am talking about software industry ofc.
radres··on Duolingo reaches $6.5B valuation on day of IPO
If you want to learn a language you are supposed to feel emotions. I speak OK English now (not my mother tongue obv.) and I still remember the silly mistakes I made while I was playing online games 10-12 years ago and people made fun of me. Never made those mistakes again.

Now I am learning a 3rd language in a new country. I started with Duolingo and never believed in "Paid courses". I have used it close to a year with little impact on my skills. But I have made most of my progress when I actually talked to someone. There is a feeling of embarrassment and defenselessness when you put yourself in uncomfortable situations like that and that is what you need to make it stay.

radres··on Apple staff quit because of the company's stance against remote working
10 people quit? That would barely qualify as news if 1000 had quit.
radres··on Ask HN: Recruiters want people who do side projects, yet contracts forbid them?
When I was looking for my first job some years ago, I kept answering "Never used it" to tools that take maybe a day to a week to master. That made me fail at so many HR stages.
radres··on Git undo: We can do better
I can't believe how so many devs are hating git. It is one of the best tools in software engineering.
radres··on Starlink is now Accepting General Pre-orders
I see that some people think we can do much better in latency. But you need to realize an information will never, never ever, travel from Europe to US West under 30 ms.

Why? Light travels from Berlin to SF in 30 milliseconds. That is absolute minimum you can do. This is not even roundtrip time.

So when Starlink tells you it will be 20 ms, just think about 20 ms to where? To the nearest satellite? Sure.

radres··on German draft proposal would subsidize smaller firms to enter 5G market
Holy shit
radres··on IKEA buys 11,000 acres of U.S. forest to keep it from being developed
I wish IKEA was public so I could buy some shares. Not because of this news necessarily, I do not see much value with this move but in general I can see that their business works amazingly here in Europe.
radres··on Turkey imposes advertising bans on Twitter, Periscope and Pinterest
Isn't it better to admit it than to not do anything about it?
radres··on Simulating the PIN cracking scene in Terminator 2
Maybe if I had watched the movie I would've felt differently, but I couldn't resonate with the comments stating the nostalgia and all. To me it read like "here is a code that does this".
radres··on “I've had to relearn coding to get through the new interviews”
What's gonna happen when a company opens position and will get 100 applications from people with certificate in X,Y,Z?
radres··on Amazon destroys $1.5m of sellers inventory – now homeless
Something something one basket.
radres··on Surprising new feature in AMD Ryzen 3000
It's interesting that the author uses a forum as a personal blog
radres··on Google killed a small smart glass maker after acquiring it
In the article it says this move by Google is worse than Amazon investing in businesses and stealing info. How is this worse? Google bought the whole company, didn't make partial investment. They can do whatever they want with the company.
radres··on Cingulata: Run C++ code over encrypted data with fully homomorphic encryption
So I can give an executable to anyone in the world and they cannot get to my source code?
radres··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2020)
Why remote US? Isn't it fully remote company now?
radres··on Ask HN: Am I the longest-serving programmer – 57 years and counting?
OP asked longest-serving programmer. That doesn't involve people who switched to management or some other position like CEO.
radres··on The Subtle Dangers of the Comma Operator (C++)
That sure is a weird usage
radres··on DigitalOcean VPC
Ok, it seems to show up at calculator.aws when you go to "advanced" section
