radio4fan··on My one talk with Marissa Mayer
I found it interesting and not at all bitter.

The point was "Once they've bought it, promises don't matter", and there were two interesting stories that illustrate this point.

/shrugs

We all know yahoo are going to fuck up tumblr, and the promises that they've made won't matter.

radio4fan··on Food Practices Banned in Europe But Allowed in the US
I don't see where TFA aruges that the food business in the EU is sorted, rather that many practices which are rightly illegal in the EU are legal in the US.

Murder is illegal everywhere, but that's not to say it never happens.

radio4fan··on Things that Americans find incomprehensible about the UK
> at which point you start looking for property in France

Good lord; you'd regret that. French bureaucracy is a hundred times worse than that in the UK. It's one of the biggest reasons I left France.

And in French swimming pools you are required to wear speedo-type trunks. You will not be allowed to swim in anything else.

radio4fan··on Things that Americans find incomprehensible about the UK
That reminds me of the joke that convicted pedophiles always seem to have greasy hair, thick glasses and bad teeth.

What is it about that look that children find so attractive?

Yep, I'm probably going to regret not using a throwaway account...

radio4fan··on The effect of size on sexual attractiveness
The abstract is here:

radio4fan··on Huge attack on WordPress sites could spawn never-before-seen super botnet
Yep, I have to develop 'WordPress sites' sometimes and the only consistency is its awfulness. It's the PHP of PHP.

Having a default username in the first place is incredibly poor practice. So many users stick to 'admin', making it just a case of guessing the password.

And don't get me started on that bloody "the loop" finite state machine. I mean, really?

radio4fan··on No Company For Old Programmers
I'm a one-man business doing web development.

I get my work almost solely through contacts I made when I lived in London, though I left the UK in 2007.

Sorry: probably not what you wanted to hear!

radio4fan··on No Company For Old Programmers
42 here, and still loving it.

I work from home, and can work anywhere in Europe, as much or as little as I want (within reason). I don't have to put up with meetings and bullshit bosses. Above all, I still love programming for its puzzle-solving side, and for its non-stop accumulation of learning and experience.

I'm currently having an awesome time in Barcelona, but I've lived in a beautiful city in France, by a beach in the Canary Islands, and in an 18th Century Norman Château (well, in its converted stable anyway).

I'm sooooo glad I stuck to the coalface and didn't move into management, or I'd probably still be swearing at tourists on the tube every day.

radio4fan··on A Personal Statement from Iain Banks
Nonsense.

He knows it's terminal (it's spread all over the place), and if he chooses to live the rest of his life on his own terms and not enduring the significant side effects of chemo, then it's his choice and good luck to him.

My grandmother refused chemo (cancer in bowel, liver, lymph nodes) and I think she made the right choice.

radio4fan··on Growing Tomatoes
> What's wrong with teabags?

Depends on the brand, but the big UK brands (like PG) use some kind of plastic in the bags which doesn't compost.

radio4fan··on Growing Tomatoes
Tomatoes are great fun to grow (try Sungold -- fantastic little yellow cherry tomatoes that you can't otherwise buy).

But if you're busy, have a go at chillis: no blight, no splitting, they tolerate under- and over-watering and poor soil, and there are a huge variety available (including some great-looking ornamentals). They have a much longer fruiting period so you're not overwhelmed by huge numbers of chillis at the same time.

If you put them on a sunny windowsill in winter they will survive and keep flowering and fruiting over winter (probably dont need to bother if you live somewhere like Southern California). You'll need to start using fertilizer if you do this.

You can just dry a chilli you like from the supermarket and use the seeds from that: germination rates are near 100%. Then once you're hooked, buy esoteric varieties on the internet.

radio4fan··on The DDoS that almost broke the Internet
Great post, and thanks for introducing me to the Open DNS Resolver Project.

radio4fan··on 21 Nested Callbacks
Unless I'm missing some wit, that seems uncalled-for.

And judging by her github profile, she's a good programmer by any reasonable definition.

radio4fan··on 21 Nested Callbacks
And the other is its ubiquity on cheap hosting.
radio4fan··on The Send to Kindle Button
Indeed. I've been using the klip.me extension, which is great:

http://www.klip.me/

Even better has been their Google Reader to Kindle service, which I've set up to send a daily chapterized kindle version of all the news blogs I follow.

Oh well.

radio4fan··on “Paleofantasy”: Stone Age delusions
An alternative view, according to the wiki page:

> The nickname, urging a comparison to the classical image of "Venus," is now controversial. According to Christopher Witcombe, "the ironic identification of these figurines as 'Venus' pleasantly satisfied certain assumptions at the time about the primitive, about women, and about taste." Catherine McCoid and LeRoy McDermott hypothesize that the figurines may have been created as self-portraits.

But let's face it, the evidence must be scant either way.

radio4fan··on Astrobiologists Find Ancient Fossils in Meteorite Fragments
Absolutely. It would be great it was true, but it's almost certainly not.

Images like this are effectively Rorschach tests. Sure, they may look like xenofossils to astrobiologists, but there are no doubt people to whom they look like their grandmother lying in a pool of blood...

radio4fan··on Douglas Adams' 61st birthday doodle by Google
I'm not seeing it in Spain either. Though going to http://google..co.uk does the trick.
radio4fan··on “Paleofantasy”: Stone Age delusions
> Obesity is the result of a caloric surplus. Cavemen didn't have that luxury.

No obese cavemen? How about a cavewoman?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venus_of_Willendorf

radio4fan··on “Paleofantasy”: Stone Age delusions
If the body digested everything with 100% efficiency and didn't produce waste, and also treated all 'calories' equally, then I'd agree that thermodynamics tells us everything we need to know.

But even people coming from the complete opposite end of the argument to the paleo crowd ("Eat more whole grains!") agree that the amount of heat produced by a substance when it's burnt in a calorimeter doesn't tell the full story about its potential for causing obesity.

radio4fan··on Breaking down Amazon's mega dropdown
They're back in, due to popular demand:

radio4fan··on Mark Shuttleworth: Canonical leads Ubuntu, not 'your whims'
"My gut instinct is that the HUD will work on a mobile device and as the platform matures it will become better."

I think you're right. Unity works great on a netbook, purely for consuming. Fine for a mobile device.

There used to be a Ubuntu 'netbook remix' which came with Unity (before it was the default), and it fitted there perfectly.

Canonical are hardly alone in betting the farm on mobile-like interfaces. MS are doing it with Windows 8, and some of OS X >= Lion's interface is only usable with a multitouch trackpad.

Whether they're right or not is open to discussion, but it's clearly happening.

radio4fan··on Why Steve Jobs Never Listened to His Customers
I'll give you narcissist, but I don't think Jobs had any respect for anyone else or their opinions.

This may have been a good or bad thing, according to taste.

radio4fan··on Breaking down Amazon's mega dropdown
Thanks for that link.

I love what he says about iteration:

"I don't know for sure why the Microsoft solution is so clunky. It could be they just didn't do a good job of copying the Mac. More likely, they never tested and iterated. When Eric and I finished our first prototype, it was at least as clunky as Microsoft's solution. We, however, put ours through another four or five rounds of testing and design before we elected to ship it."

Sometimes perfect is not the enemy of good.

radio4fan··on How I ended up with Mac
Wikipedia has this (and more) to say on POSIX:

Not to be confused with Unix, Unix-like, or Linux.

POSIX (pron.: /ˈpɒzɪks/ poz-iks), an acronym for "Portable Operating System Interface", is a family of standards specified by the IEEE for maintaining compatibility between operating systems...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posix

The old MS POSIX subsystem was replaced by the amusingly named SFU (Services for UNIX). Then that got replaced by the bought-in Interix.

Mac OS X is UNIX because it's certified under the Single UNIX Specification: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_UNIX_Specification

Windows is not in any way UNIX. There aren't even any certified Linux distros (AFAIK). Mac OS X is UNIX.

radio4fan··on The Rise Of The Artist
I thought it had been pretty well established that a minority of people can learn to code.
radio4fan··on Typeplate - A Typography Template
I was once told by a typesetter that paragraphs have always been separated by indenting the first line.

Then along came Microsoft Word, which inserted vertical space between paragraphs instead. Now most people think it's supposed to be that way.

I have no citation for this, but have noticed that novels in print use indentation rather than spacing.

radio4fan··on Apple’s Deleting iCloud Emails That Contain The Phrase 'Barely Legal Teens'
Yahoo (particularly when providing services for BT) silently delete some spam, even mail with a raw SA score < 1.5.

And they don't respond to complaints, even from their own users.

I've been running the same pukka mailing list for 12 years, I'm in their abuse feedback loop, have proved exclusive ownership of the mail server, all mail is DKIM signed with valid SPF records, mail is accepted with a 250 OK, you name it.

Still they bin my emails, but only to some accounts. No rhyme or reason, no bounce, no spam folder. Just never arrives.

radio4fan··on Apple’s Deleting iCloud Emails That Contain The Phrase 'Barely Legal Teens'
Pah. I'm old enough to remember DOS users mocking mac users for using GUIs and mice.
radio4fan··on The New jQuery Site
Looks quite nice.

On a high-traffic site like this, I'm surprised they've not really addressed performance.

Currently:

Scripts at the top, not the bottom

CSS not concatenated and minimized

JS not minimized

GZIP not enabled on the server

Icons not in a sprite sheet

Also, invalid HTML.

I know, I need to chill out.
