radicsge··on Effects of Daylight Saving Time on Traffic Accident Risk
It is also a question what happens in Autumn if it balances out then there is no news actually.
radicsge··on U.S. Officials Say Huawei Can Covertly Access Telecom Networks
The "good guys" (telco/law enforcement) have strict criterias to access it, like court order. Thus it is regulated by the local government.

Meanwhile Huawei is supposedly actively created a workaround:

> U.S. officials say Huawei has built equipment that secretly preserves the manufacturer’s ability to access networks through these interfaces without the carriers’ knowledge.

radicsge··on Banning facial recognition is missing the point
In the solidarity protests for HK in Vancouver almost everybody wears them for obvious reason. Would be interesting if Canadian police require to remove them...
radicsge··on Apple lawsuit tests if an employee can plan rival startup while on payroll
being aware and vocal would change anything? Not in legal world.
radicsge··on Washington pressures TSMC to make chips in US
In case of war it can be forced to, the question is whether it is competitive with TSMC in medium/long run?
radicsge··on Ocean cleaning device succeeds in removing plastic for the first time
Since the plastic is breaking down (these patches would disappear without supply) and I guess you yourself also doesn't want to pollute the ocean with new plastic not sure why is this an issue.

Or do you suggest to continue to pollute the ocean?

radicsge··on Ocean cleaning device succeeds in removing plastic for the first time
You are forgetting the damage that the plastic is doing for the wildlife / fishes.

The plastic is breaking down to the size that is impossible to capture. This project is needed yesterday already.

radicsge··on Ocean cleaning device succeeds in removing plastic for the first time
Why do you expecting that they should solve every problem in the world? It is really parallel (collection until prevention).

They really put down something on the table, pitched for their idea and delivered it. You can go ahead and execute your dream as well.

radicsge··on Ocean cleaning device succeeds in removing plastic for the first time
This is really cool technology, should get more advertisement
radicsge··on Chinese telecoms must use "AI and other technical means" to identify phone users
Might also depends on the region. Richer regions like Shanghai might have softer rules same as for VPNs.
radicsge··on Chinese telecoms must use "AI and other technical means" to identify phone users
Are you referring to the cultural revolution? That is not a re-education camp. Although you were out in the middle of nowhere for an extended period, you could freely talk with others (many groups still meet up to today, and/or married somebody there). That was more like an exile not a prison with forced agenda.
radicsge··on Fallout from Blizzard Hong Kong Incident
Those people who can circumvent the GFoC, already knows that their leader is pulling down the whole country.
radicsge··on Enter the dragon on the road to a trade war
parts of the European Union (?)

This is new, any explanation why parts of?

I would say the developed countries (before China). China is the first where ethic is not a virtue... unfortunately.

radicsge··on Japan's Women Opt Out of Marriage
It will be never outdated, it is a must for healthy mental grow of children (as you also weakly pointed out). To get love, to be able to focus and deliver, get direction, learn and bring forward traditions, learn social skills, create bond etc.

Of course orphanage also works, but hard to imagine it is the ideal structure, thou it worked for Turkish janissary (there are probably plenty of other examples from history) and now China also trying it with minorities.

Children are not as expensive as one imagine, you might have to give up the most expensive phone/car luxury etc. But just ask any elderly if it worth it. If your mind thinking more like assets, children has the biggest appreciation value over anything.

radicsge··on Field Notes: Highlights from Huawei
1) It is more like where the brand was strong survived (or where the technology was hard to replicate). I'm pretty sure there are plenty of example including wahaha-danone etc.

Don't get me wrong, China did it well to carve back it's status and didn't get colonized by US, but sooner or later the other parties naturally get angry if piggy-backing goes too far. It's the same in friendship, if your friend is mean once doesn't matter, but if he always take away more then what he is giving then the relationship will break down eventually.

radicsge··on Japan announces ¥132.6 bil aid to Bangladesh
Big kudos to Japan! Some of our today's leader should learn from them!
radicsge··on AMD Ryzen 3000 announced
It is amazingly cheap (compared to the intel's 1.1K), wonder what could be the reason behind it.
radicsge··on Sorting in Japanese – An Unsolved Problem (2011)
Think about numbers, it is not sorted phonetically, Even the alphabet is not. All those languages that use alphabet sort in exactly the same order regardless the pronunciation.
radicsge··on The challenge of low-light photography is dead, and Huawei killed it
But one commenter is right, the phone doesn't have a bright source in front of it, meanwhile the second camera has.

And it is very suspicious to be prerecorded, as there should be shadows in the room at least the recorded's shadow should be shown as well

radicsge··on Please Make Google AMP Optional
Or instead of waiting few seconds, just get into the line of closed internet (let them monopolize it). It's the same like giving up the democracy for one-party system. Because if you stand out, you might heart yourself.

Nothing will you miss by missing few news. Try it, seriously!

radicsge··on Google featured snippets are worse than fake news
I feel referring to (or hiding behind) scalability is a bit salt in the wound. These huge companies are destroying so many jobs (by scalability) - ok unavoidable - but they should do sometimes things that are not scalable and give jobs back to people in trouble. Im not sure how long they should be allowed to go away with it. [just dreaming...]
radicsge··on Why I'm Frequently Absent from Open Source
And that is exactly one of the reason of the opensource, to get more contributor.. (instead of releasing e.g. binaries..)
radicsge··on Why I'm Frequently Absent from Open Source
It's not always charity, some opensource to have co-maintainers, some opensource to show his achievement and put into his resume. Some opensource because then they can build something together as a community so he can also use it in the next-release (..instead of patching his version). etc.
radicsge··on New wheat disease threatens Europe’s crops
Medical procedure and vaccines can be an analogy to fungicides not GMO. GMO is like everybody suddenly want to be blond and have blue eyes. But if everybody become a clone basically, one bacteria or whatever could sweep out the whole world.
radicsge··on New wheat disease threatens Europe’s crops
And in case of GMO wait until, all crops are fallen to one specialized disease or one sudden change of environment. And then what?
radicsge··on China won't be luring foreign tech talent any time soon
As a foreigner who lives in Shanghai for almost 8 years, the list would be a bit different:

1) pollution - Since the Disneyland has opened, things are improved. But above the regular days, it is depressing when finally the weekend came and you can't leave the 4 walls.

2) overpopulation - I don't mean the large population, but the overpopulation. There is no space for cars, yet everybody is buying, sometimes a two lane road becomes barely one, because one lane is completely blocked by parking cars and bikes going randomly. Parks are small and spare in the city. There is barely playground for children only expensive indoor ones.

3) People.. I know I know, but it drives me mad, you can only queue up like once in a year when nobody will come to the front to you. I can't count how many times I've seen that cars just blocking the ambulance in rush for no reason. When you stop with your car because the road is blocked, it's guaranteed sby from the back will try to overtake you either from left or right. My friend had a light accident with a motorcyclist (50%-50%), he brought him the hospital and paid everything. Few months later he was dragged to the court and was charged for 28K RMB (~$4K) (including the bills he paid in the hospital, fortunately he kept the cc receipts, the repair of the bike cost like a new one etc. even if it is mostly paid by the insurance, very depressing to see this amount of fraud). And so on.. Of course you can meet nice and good people, but still the daily routine will be different (also gave up counting how many times i was almost hit by a car or motor).

4) The first green is like 4 hours driving. And not easy drive but bloody fight. Have to be fully alert, people even overtake you on the shoulder of the road + I can't recall I ever could drive without seeing accidents, see barrels or other things on the road.

5) internet - after 7-8pm it is basically cut, so overloaded, no website loads that is not hosted in the country. You have to use some kind of vpn for everything! ... your gray hair is granted. No form of video-chat works beside wechat. Skype though exists, in the current year, was really painful communicating with my parents.. as my experience goes only works during working hours or on mobile net. In this year when i go home, I started to consider it as an offline zone.

.. sorry to be honest, no pun intended. It is how it is (My wife is Chinese so Im halfway there also :)... and things are improving with time, just way too slowly, Except 2. and 4. that can't be really fixed. (can't imagine anytime soon that it will be a dream destination..)

radicsge··on Effective learning: Rules of formulating knowledge (1999)
double this. Practicing is useless, if you dont have motivation where you can apply this knowledge. I wish i could go back in time and learn the math in university once again after failing to understand things in stat and ml. just because missing basics things what i "practiced" in the past without understanding it...
radicsge··on Scouts and guides provide ‘mental health boost for life’
That's right, there are quite a few thing in the world, that you need to experience (to really understand), because knowing about it is not the same. Like poverty (disability etc), one might know about it, but until experience it one might look those down. You need to be exposed many things as a child to gain experience, because as an adult you will be much more closed to new things and have less time. + this is safe.
radicsge··on Scouts and guides provide ‘mental health boost for life’
Not sure it make sense. How to choose/decide about religion (or the opposite) without knowing about it. It's like refuse to send him to elemental art/math/chemistry class until he choose the university himself. And the another thing, you have enjoyed it (as a whole package), yet you deny this from your child? Sounds a bit strange.
radicsge··on How Japan Prepares Its Children for Independence
I had left my Nikon camera in a shop, when I've realized and ran back, a shop associate was trying to knot it to a chair she just put outside of the shop (so it can be seen). It was amazing! --- Other story I had in Japan. That I lost direction in Kyoto and had no money since all ATM is closed (at night). At some point somebody just stopped his bike and asked where i go. When I told him, he said that I should wait a bit, he will pick up his car and bring me there (in the middle of the night!) .. and so he did.

No place like japan (or at least very few)!
