radicality··on Ask HN: Notification Overload
There’s a way somewhere deep in settings to disable those. I still have UberEats notifications for food arrival, but was able to disable all other ones while digging through all the settings
radicality··on Apple introduces new AirTag with longer range and improved findability
Oh yeah totally, that “feature” of a Duracell cr2032 battery screwed me over in that exact case. They just don’t work at all with an AirTag (battery bought from afaik reputable supplier, Home Depot). Switched to Energizer cr2032 and it’s been great.
radicality··on Certificate Transparency Log Explorer
Nice, thanks. What are the different options (log streams?) you can select? I read the info box but it isn’t super clear. I figure the numbers are a year - how come there are 2027 ones with data being populated ? And how come something like ‘Argon2025h2’ also has data from ‘1h’ ago? I would expect data only on the 2026h1 - or are these some kind of shards but with weird year naming ?

I also don’t understand the back button at all on Safari iOS, I think one version it just stopped doing its one task correctly. It’s messing with my mental model of how I arrived at each tab. Currently:

Safari iOS: Be on a page, tap hold a link, click Open in new tab, go to new tab. The Back button should be grayed out and isn’t, and clicking it closes the tab.

Chrome iOS: Be on a page, tap hold a link, click Open in new tab, go to new tab. Back button correctly grayed out as the tab has nowhere to go back to.

For email app on Mac, I’ve been using MailMate for a few years now and quite like it. Once you sync the mailbox, search is basically instant.

And for even bigger search tasks, Foxtrot Pro is quite good too. Not cheap, but it is fast, and the tool I reach for when I need to find something and when Finder search don’t find it

radicality··on Bugs Apple loves
that Contacts one hits hard, no idea how many hours I wasted trying to figure out what the hell it’s doing.

Just today was looking at Activity Monitor Disk tab, for an unrelated reason - sorted by Bytes Read, lo and behold ‘contactsd’ - the Contacts daemon, is in 2nd spot at ~400 _gigabytes_ read, right after mediaanalysisd. I don’t even remember last time I opened the Contacts app on my Mac. It felt like it’s gonna be another time sink with no solution, so I didn’t even bother to investigate more.

radicality··on Show HN: WalletWallet – create Apple passes from anything
I don’t know about Google Wallet, but for iOS Wallet, it is not possible to create a new entry there yourself as a normal user. It has to be signed with a $99/yr certificate, so this thing does the signing for you. The utility is that whatever you created now lives with the rest of the passes in one place.
radicality··on Gemini 3 Flash: Frontier intelligence built for speed
How do I get Gemini to be more proactive in finding/double-checking itself against new world information and doing searches?

For that reason I still find chatgpt way better for me, many things I ask it first goes off to do online research and has up to date information - which is surprising as you would expect Google to be way better at this. For example, was asking Gemini 3 Pro recently about how to do something with a “RTX 6000 Blackwell 96GB” card, and it told me this card doesn’t exist and that I probably meant the rtx 6000 ada… Or just today I asked about something on macOS 26.2, and it told me to be cautious as it’s a beta release (it’s not). Whereas with chatgpt I trust the final output more since it very often goes to find live sources and info.

radicality··on VPN location claims don't match real traffic exits
Oh wow, I had no idea that “virtual location” is even a thing. Imo it should not, I don’t even see a use case for that, it just seems like straight-up lying about the traffic exit location. Glad to see the provider I occasionally use, Mullvad, passed the test.
radicality··on Show HN: Gemini Pro 3 imagines the HN front page 10 years from now
Or try the very sarcastic and nihilistic ‘Monday’ gpt, which surprisingly is an official openAI gpt.

radicality··on The RAM shortage comes for us all
Think the article should also mention how OpenAI is likely responsible for it. Good article I found from another thread here yesterday: https://www.mooreslawisdead.com/post/sam-altman-s-dirty-dram...
radicality··on Apple to beat Samsung in smartphone shipments for first time in 14 years
Similarly for TVs - i got a samsung oled few years ago, and while the hardware seems great, I do wish I had gone with LG as their TVs seem more open to install custom firmware. (I do pretty much just use appleTV and fireTV devices plugged in to the Samsung, but still, the main TV ui is pretty abysmal)
radicality··on Last Week on My Mac: Losing confidence
Photos is definitely not great, though I still try and deal with it for the easy iCloud syncing. Some examples off top of my head for Photos crappiness, all on my top of the range 128GB macbook m4 max

- doing 'cmd-R' (rotate) on a standard few-megabyte image might beachball the app for a few seconds. Rotating a small image file...

- Rotating a video seems to re-encode the whole video, instead of setting some metadata flags. Imagine you have, say, a 20GB video recording, and rotate it. That will now be a separate new 20GB file on your mac drive.

- If i view the album of some specific person that has many pictures with location metadata, and I scroll to the bottom where the map is, it almost immediately starts allocating >100GB memory, beachballs, starts gigabytes of memory paging, and you gotta kill the app asap.

radicality··on PS5 now costs less than 64GB of DDR5 memory. RAM jumps to $600 due to shortage
I just checked how much I paid around 12 months ago for Crucial 96GB kit (2x48GB ddr5 5600 so-dimm). Was $224, same kit today I see listed at $592, wild :/
radicality··on Deep Dive into FFmpeg 8.0
Do you know if it’s supported on Mac too, with whatever platform specific optimizations like running it on the gpu / with MPS ?
radicality··on iPhone Pocket
> iPhone Pocket features a singular 3D-knitted construction

What does that mean? What would be an example of 2D knitted construction ?

radicality··on My Impressions of the MacBook Pro M4
I would personally be afraid of using that in case it causes damage long-term to the screen either due to temperature or power draw or something. Idk if there are significant hardware differences but in this case I would guess there’s a real hardware reason for it?
radicality··on Power over Ethernet (PoE) basics and beyond
I bought last year a device like that I think - was from some company named TexasPoE I think, and it took Ethernet cable, and output has usb-c with 1GbE and power. I sometimes use it with my iphone or iPad and do get the wired Ethernet connection and charging
radicality··on Power over Ethernet (PoE) basics and beyond
Fwiw, I’ve had a few different PoE switches from Ubiquity and at least so far haven’t had any problems with the switches. My current one is the 48 Pro-Max etherlighting , and I have around fifteen PoE devices and it’s pretty much plug and play always.

I did have issues with some of their other products - eg an old CloudKey gen1 that I had remotely in my parents place that I think ran out of space to the point it can’t update itself and can’t compact some old mongodb.

radicality··on Disk Utility still can't check and repair APFS volumes and containers (2021)
I didn't know about that. I don't use windows at all, but have a Synology with a bunch of drives and use it with SMB for my multiple Macs and apple devices, haven't had any larger issues and things seem to work fine. Should I be switching to NFS ?
radicality··on Resizing images in Rust, now with EXIF orientation support
Is jpeg the only format which can be “rotated losslessly” in this way, ie without exif metadata (and excluding any obvious formats like bitmaps or whatever can be trivially rotated) ?
radicality··on The time picker on the iPhone's alarm app isn't circular, it's just a long list
In Poland we’ll most often use the 24hr time even when casually speaking and setting up meeting times, or people talking on tv/radio etc. Imo much simpler and less confusing
radicality··on The Synology End Game
Have you already tried tinkering with the smb settings on both the local and nas config like here:

radicality··on Pixel 10 Phones
It’s actually already available in iOS 18! On the main Photos page, click the little filtering icon and select something like “Not in any album”
radicality··on Can modern LLMs count the number of b's in "blueberry"?
Oh wow, I stare at those model names every day, and I only just now after reading your comment realized what “haiku”, “sonnet”, and “opus” imply about the models! Seems super obvious in retrospect but never thought about it!
radicality··on GPT-5 leaked system prompt?
In that case, best bet might be to use it via APIs, either directly from OpenAI or via a router like OpenRouter as provider, and then use whatever chatting frontend you want.

Or you could also click the ‘New temporary chat’ chatgpt button which is meant to not persist and not use any past data.

radicality··on Replacing tmux in my dev workflow
Hey. Not sure what's triggering it from the tmux.conf, i think it's just the `-r` like you have ? I think it stands for 'repeat'. Perhaps you are already doing the same thing, spam resize? I have something like `bind -r H resize-pane -L 1`, so when I hit my <leader> and then hold capital H (shift+h), it just keeps resizing by 1 unit of size.

other parts of my config that could be relevant, using with iterm2.

``` bind h select-pane -L bind j select-pane -D bind k select-pane -U bind l select-pane -R bind -r H resize-pane -L 1 bind -r J resize-pane -D 1 bind -r K resize-pane -U 1 bind -r L resize-pane -R 1 set -g mouse on bind \\ split-window -h -c '#{pane_current_path}' bind - split-window -v -c '#{pane_current_path}' set -g focus-events on setw -g aggressive-resize on set -g display-time 4000 set -s escape-time 0 ```
radicality··on Micron rolls out 276-layer SSD trio for speed, scale, and stability
They exist but definitely more painful to use at a home setup since their formats are more server oriented, like U.2/U.3 or E1S and few others. And for course the prices - you can get 30,60 TB (and even more), but it’s gonna be >$4k.
And versus the normal M2 drives, the larger server grade are more annoying. For example, I got recently a 15.36TB Kioxia Cd6-R in U.3 format, for $1.3k, which is not bad for ssd prices. After getting the right adapters and fitting it inside a minisforum ms-01. It’s working fine, but it immediately reached its “critical” temperature (while doing nothing) so I had to attach a big fan and cool it. All the larger SSDs which are meant for server rooms will expect lots of cooling.
radicality··on Replacing tmux in my dev workflow
Nice, I came up with something similar when trying ghostty. Were you able to replicate/setup continuous key hold for resizing? The way I have it it tmux is that doing leader,Shift+hold h/i/k/j continually resizes a pane while I keep holding for example Shift+h. But I wasn’t able to replicate it in ghostty
radicality··on Low cost mmWave 60GHz radar sensor for advanced sensing
I don’t know how similar is to this board, but I’ve already had this 60GHz gadget running with esphome connected to homeAssistant for a few months! :)
