rada··on What it’s like to have two mothers
You've missed the main point of the article: "opinions are used interchangeably with facts", and rushed to post an opinion not (as far as one could tell from your post) based on fact. Do you have anything to back up your claim that a "male (or female) role model is an important part of the development of kids"?

Just as an example, here is research that says otherwise:

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/01/100121135904.ht...

The researchers found no evidence of gender-based parenting abilities, with the "partial exception of lactation," noting that very little about the gender of the parent has significance for children's psychological adjustment and social success.

Another example:

http://news.discovery.com/human/genetics/parents-gender-chil...

Children usually benefit from having two parents instead of one. The gender of each parent, however, does not have a significant impact on a child's success.

rada··on Shark Tank Statistics
One peculiar thing that I noticed in those statistics is that Daymond John was leading in terms of deals.

He isn't. Look at the numbers again, Barbara Corcoran has done the most deals, Kevin O'Leary has invested the most money.

rada··on Fixing the worst law in technology
Not factually accurate:

In Minnesota, oral sex is punishable by up to a year in jail and a $3,000 fine.

Factually accurate:

In Minnesota, by law, oral sex is punishable by up to a year in jail and a $3,000 fine. However, that law is never enforced and your chances of getting prosecuted are 0.

Factually accurate does not mean you can cherry pick your facts and pretend you are telling the whole truth just because each individual fact is accurate.

rada··on Fixing the worst law in technology
"Strictly speaking", in Minnesota where I am currently located, oral sex is prohibited, and is punishable by up to a year in jail and a $3,000 fine. Would you seriously defend an article that discusses this as "factually accurate"? Honestly, people keep going through incredible mental acrobatics to justify Aaron Swartz's actions.

crazy jurisdictions like Minnesota, where salary obligations attach to company directors

Can you re-phrase this in a way that's googleable? Thank you.

rada··on Is there really an IT talent shortage?
(Recycling my own old comment).

The whole "shortage of IT talent" hysteria is way overblown when you look at the actual numbers. Just one example, latest DICE salary report:

http://media.dice.com/report/2012-2011-dice-salary-survey/

Contrast the opening sentence:

Technology professionals enjoyed their largest annual salary growth since 2008, according to the 2012-2011 Salary Survey from Dice, the leading career site for technology and engineering professionals.

... with the actual numbers:

After two straight years of wages remaining nearly flat, tech professionals on average garnered salary increases of more than two percent, boosting their average annual wage to $81,327 from $79,384 in 2010.

So, let's see. While the inflation is chugging along at ~3% per year, we get 2 flat years, followed by a 1% increase? So basically, we make less money each year? Is the tech industry an economic miracle? Are programmers the one must-have product whose prices get lower when it's in short supply and the buyers have pockets full of cash? Or is there a simpler explanation?

Even better, go ahead and play around with same title, different seniority.

Junior iOS programmer: http://www.indeed.com/salary?q1=junior++ios+programmer&l...

Senior iOS programmer: http://www.indeed.com/salary?q1=senior++ios+programmer&l...

See how juniors get raises, while seniors get flat-lined? That's the downward pressure of H1Bs as well as evidence of buyers' (hiring managers) actual purchasing behavior markedly different from "we can't find anyone who can do basic fizz buzz! we need people with skillz!".

I read your comment as essentially advocating vigilante justice as well. If you are not saying "we are free to steal if we think it's for the public good", then what are you saying?
rada··on A Most Peculiar Test Drive
The charging stations take one hour to fully charge the 85 Kwh Model S that was test-driven. A 30-minute charge would give the vehicle enough juice for 150 miles of travel.

rada··on Psilocybin shows success in medical trials
You can reach the same insight by doing enough vipassana meditation.

If someone posted an article about a new supersonic jet that takes you from New York to Sydney in under 4 hours, you could make a comment about being able to do the same by foot. You would be technically correct however it wouldn't be a very useful comment, given the difference between several hours and a lifetime.

rada··on Steve Heymann Should Be Fired
When you are signing a petition titled "Fire Assistant U.S. Attorney Steve Heymann", it is not to "simply let others know my attitude". You are, quite literally, petitioning to get the guy fired.

rada··on Ask HN: Why doesn't email have a function so senders can pull back unread emails
Off of top of my head: read email can be set back to "unread", email notifications (you've received an email from X) running on multiple clients such as it's open to interpretation whether email has been "delivered", client rules (move email from sender X to folder X), etc.

Oh please. There is fantasy land and then there is reality. Press releases are not guns. White-collar criminals do not die resisting arrest. And internet bullies like Torvalds cause way more suicides than prosecutors like Ortiz.
rada··on [dead]
Just a few months ago, Linus Torvalds urged "mentally diseased" people to kill themselves over printer security and now, he is a Crusader Against Bullies Who Make People Kill Themselves. Bacteria have more self-awareness than this.

In Linus's own words, "here are the sources, so that people can compare them for themselves".

rada··on VCs Think My Boobs Need An Algorithm
Just tried the website out and can't resist jumping in either. Sorry to be harsh but I really don't appreciate a long questionnaire with a forced sign up under the pretense of personalization when really, none is offered in the end. Why did I just spend 10 minutes filling out all the information only to be offered none of what I asked for?

There has to be a term for this as it happens very often: describe a common, frustrating consumer problem thereby implying that your product will solve it; follow up with a bunch of exciting and mystery-building hand waiving; finally, unveil your cheap, run-of-the-mill product identical to all the other cheap, run-of-the-mill products already on the market. At the end of the day, the website sells the same stuff that you'd find at any lower-priced mass retailer and doesn't appear to actually curate its supposedly personalized "my shop" based on my answers.

Some more impressions. One, it's rather discrediting for a "true fit" company not to offer true fit sizes such as AA for example. Two, it's rather annoying when a sales page asks for your preferences (brand, coverage, etc) and then proceeds to suggest things that are the exact opposite. Three, those impractical, showy "sexy time" bras, which seem to be 90% of the inventory, require panties to match, otherwise there is literally no point to them. Four, it's rather lame for a supposedly women-oriented website to push those fake silicone inserts as tough there is something wrong with real women's breasts.

Yes, bra fit is a big problem, and yes, it's a disruption opportunity. But I fail to see how True & Co has an interesting approach. They sell the same brands as everyone else and ignore your preferences just like those overworked, disinterested sales people. The shipping is free but if you have to return anything - which at a minimum of 5 bras per shipment is virtually guaranteed - it is easier to just go to your local mass retailer and try things on.

rada··on Math Professor Invents Non-Reversing Mirror
Fifty Shades is pornography for women. IMHO that's the only reason everyone is clutching their pearls about the bad writing. Your typical male pornography storylines/cinematography are much, much worse - and yet they are typically spared the high-brow literary scrutiny.
rada··on The Pirate Bay Is The World’s Most Efficient Public Library
Kind of like a hotel is a physical object but your stay in it is intangible so once you forge the key you are entitled in staying for free? Or kind of like McDonald's brand name is intangible so anyone can open a shack and call it McDonalds without paying a franchise fee?

Seriously, you can make up esoteric arguments ad infinitum and ad absurdum but the fact is, an arbitrary distinction - digital vs. printed - does not a theft unmake. Information wants to be free but books, movies and songs want to sell, or we wouldn't be having this argument.

One last interesting thing for you to ponder: the entire fiction genre is, by definition, misinformation.

rada··on How would I get started?
Metafilter is equally as good.
rada··on The Pirate Bay Is The World’s Most Efficient Public Library
I am surprised to see someone on hacker news saying that information should not be free.

Using the word "information" in this context is rather disingenuous. We don't play music on our information players, we don't buy books at the local information store, and we don't see movies at the information theater. If we are going to have a good discussion, let's call things what they are.

It seems ridiculous that we should ignore the power of the internet for content distribution forever because it doesn't pay the bills now.

Fiat money is ridiculous in exactly the same way. Would you say that it seems ridiculous to ignore the power of Xerox because it doesn't pay the bills for sellers of physical goods?

rada··on Building 'From Holden', an apparel manufacturer, from the ground up
Looks like they launched a year ago. I went off a blog link that said it was this month, I was wrong.

@akanet - looks like you were hellbanned? Not sure if it's because you posted this infographic of your company's growth:

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mctj8bQNXI1qf7nhfo1_1280.j...

... which doesn't seem to deserve a ban.

FWIW I really like the Everlane website and the products look great. I am sorry you got caught in the crossfire - my comment wasn't intended to single out Everlane but rather to give concrete examples of the parent comment being chock-full of bad information.

(Nevertheless, even with your impressive growth, I'd like to point out that at 22 employees and 71,000 t-shirts sold, you have a long way to go before you are not bleeding big. Not exactly the grown-up definition of "doing well" - which was, of course, parent's example, not yours - so you cannot be blamed for it.)

rada··on The Fifth problem: math and anti-Semitism in the Soviet Union
I had an almost exact same "forget-it-not-gonna-happen" conversation with an admissions officer at MSU around 1984 (I think). It was suggested to my parents that a substantial bribe would reverse my fortunes. We chose not to apply - I went to my local U instead - but they could have definitely afforded it: they were both high-earners (my dad headed a science lab and my mom was a professor) plus they both made the so-called northern coefficient (basically, 2.5x regular salary for living in Bumf--k Siberia).
