rachelbythebay··on “About one-third of Basecamp employees accepted buyouts today”
Employees as "resources" I've heard of, but employees as displacement or maybe even ballast? Damn! That's a new one by me.
rachelbythebay··on Over a dozen Basecamp employees have resigned
That's not how it works in practice. If anything, it pre-filters the next group of haters so you don't have to deal with them in the future, but it also lines up the sensible people.
rachelbythebay··on Over a dozen Basecamp employees have resigned
Oh, this is something.

Lots of little avatars, right?

Lots of missing avatars now!

rachelbythebay··on Subsidiary of Toyota to acquire Lyft’s self-driving car division
This is probably for the best. Actual engineering (and actual engineers) and Lyft are two very different animals.
rachelbythebay··on Everyone Loves the $100M Deli
Go back in time on Street View and you'll see it was a Conrail family assistance center (?)... so maybe they used that to talk to the trains. Look at the elements on that tower and looks an awful lot like stuff I've seen out the window of a train. Little rectangular bow-tie looking things, mounted so their long axis is up-down.
rachelbythebay··on Thanks for the Bonus, I Quit
2009 leaked. Tweeted while most of us were still in line. Still got the screenshot.

<name> One thousand dollar impromptu cash bonus. I work for Google!!

... October 16th. Dumb.

rachelbythebay··on Thanks for the Bonus, I Quit
2009 was both. Cash a few months before, N1 right before Christmas.
rachelbythebay··on Questionable Advice: “What Should I Say In My Exit Interview?”
Say nothing. Drop off your stuff and walk. Easy.
rachelbythebay··on Julia Evans makes games about debugging
It makes me wonder why that DNS server is being that way. Switching away from it just sidestepped the issue.
rachelbythebay··on The uninvited Internet of things
You could probably record the band with a SDR from another location and just replay it on a loop. Both time and space measurements would be affected.

But you really don’t want to do this in any way that could possibly leak out. You will make a bunch of connections you never wanted to make.

rachelbythebay··on Ubiquiti starts serving ads in their management interface
First they track you, then they pander to you, then they sell you out completely.

Guess we just got to step 2.

rachelbythebay··on Ask HN: Is Google still a cool place to work?
Did you watch Silicon Valley? What do you think about sitting on the roof with a Slurpee (or a Big Gulp)? Would you rather be building stuff?
rachelbythebay··on Backblaze submitting names and sizes of files in B2 buckets to Facebook
Yeah, pretty sure that's the tracking pixel. What the hell is it doing there?
rachelbythebay··on Bunpack – Because I'm sick and tired of googling the args for unpacking things
(GNU) tar xf is smarter than you might realize these days. Try leaving off the z or j or whatever and just watch.
rachelbythebay··on Show HN: Roob. Ask your candidates for video resumes, instead of CVs
This tells me that your culture says "I want to see what you look like before I even think about hiring you". That tells me all I need to know about your so-called company culture.
rachelbythebay··on Ask HN: Is bait and switch jobs common in IT
Sure. You'll be offered the lowest thing they think you'll still take. Whether that means not giving you a vanity title, or low-balling you on salary, equity, or other things, they'll try it.
rachelbythebay··on I guess I have to watch ads everywhere on my $1,500 LG TV now
> Now I’m fully aware that it’s not unusual to see ads placed around a TV’s home screen or main menu.

This kind of acceptance is the problem. Push back! Don't buy this shit.

rachelbythebay··on Four times I felt discriminated against for being a female developer
Upside of being a token X: sometimes you get enough cash out of it to be able to leave it behind again. This only works if they get to trot you out. So get used to that bridle.

Downside of being a token X: normally they just keep you around long enough to tick off the "hiring" box(es), since nobody gives a shit about retention, and you probably won't be the one chosen to get put on a pedestal.

So yeah, keep trying until you can find a place where you can just do your work and be taken seriously and not have them treat you like a piece of meat or worse. Good luck. I'm still looking for that place.

rachelbythebay··on I Opened Microsoft Edge and Apple Got Angry
Unfortunately, this is not new. I've seen it multiple times on Macs over the years when starting Firefox on a new install. My comment has always been "guess they want to get spanked Microsoft-style".

Really, it's poor form to sniff out stuff like this. Come on.

rachelbythebay··on Can’t use iCloud with “true” as the last name
Have you seen what happens with YAML when you try to do something like

... and get to Norway?

rachelbythebay··on Verizon refuses people named “DICKinson”
Google accounts, 2009, "Nishit", among others.

Google Plus, 2011. Everything you can imagine.

Lyft, 2019, all kinds of regexes.

Worst part is when I asked them "can I get you to commit to never, ever attempt this sort of thing" and they just looked at me and said nothing.

IQAir GC MultiGas models do both. There's the 'prefilter' on the bottom (inlet), a big fan in the middle, and a bunch of gas filter canisters on top.
rachelbythebay··on Show HN: Covid Vaccine Availability for CVS, Duane Reade, Rite Aid, Walgreens
You just unblocked two elder folks in my family. Thank you.
rachelbythebay··on “555” and related telephone prefixes
Yup. PIC locks for the win.

Also, it was neat to use the equal access codes to dial around and see what numbers mapped to what carriers, and what their "welcome to XYZ" recordings sounded like.

Ah, being a kid and being bored.

rachelbythebay··on “555” and related telephone prefixes
1-700-555-4141 used to tell you who was set up as your primary interexchange carrier. It might still if you're on a truly old-school land line.
rachelbythebay··on Choose Boring Technology (2015)
How about “leaves the industry rather than have to use terrible things at dumb companies”, thus giving a survival bias that selects for shiny. I know I feel that way about a lot of stuff now.
rachelbythebay··on How They SRE
Those damn books. They keep showing up and making life miserable for people. "How to Cargo Cult".
rachelbythebay··on The most terrifying fact about blockchains is rogue AIs you can't switch off
What if you build that into the protocol? Having to set up on Mars in order to double-spend something would make it rather difficult for most people.
rachelbythebay··on Can't get computer to connect to GSM modem
Make sure putty isn’t expecting hardware flow control if your device doesn’t support it. Otherwise it’ll probably refuse to write to the port.

And yeah, rotate through the available speeds if necessary, but this sort of thing should be documented.
