raarky··on Cash vs Equity compensations
I too share a similar story. I worked at an appealing start-up with solid angel funding as employee 1, and eventually got promised x% in options upon exit. ("Upon Exit" is essentially a giant carrot on a stick.)

Whilst I had fun working there, later it became apparent that even if the company sold for 30m, in 3 years, I could earn that same amount in the contract market.

When risk/reward is taken into acount, it was a pretty easy decision to leave.

Not everything we do leads to success. The key is to keep at it in some way.

In hindsight, it's easy to correct your mistakes. Life isn't clear cut and obvious. You know now what it takes to do something that most people in the world have never done. Even if it isn't the right thing for you.

Life is about experience and I think what you've done has given you some pretty damn good xp :)

raarky··on Questions from 'My experience as a Recruiter on Hacker News'
Your posts are great. Keep up the good work :)

I work in a startup and have been fielding a lot of recruiter calls. Like many other startups, recruitment costs are simply not something we can afford with our tight budget.

One tactic I found to stop getting constant calls and emails from the same recruiter is thru honesty and building awareness of our business position.

I let them know that we can't afford the costs now but we might be in a better position in a couple of years. By that time, I'd like to select a recruiter based on their professionalism, practices and ethics.

raarky··on Are start-up employee's usually consultants/contracted?
Most of the startups I've seen try to hire core full-time employees that get lower salaries + options.

I have seen a few rare instances where a consultant is hired but usually startups can't afford the consultant rates hence the options

raarky··on ASP.NET MVC 4 Roadmap
"and don't get caught up in doing things the "Microsoft" way"

agreed. I've been an ms dev for a while but over the last couple years have branched out into python. Since then, I've really started to hate writing "best practice" code in .net where you get lost in a sea of interfaces and over-used design patterns.

raarky··on Gaming's most fiendish anti-piracy tricks
I wonder if any game companies have secretly released their own pirate version, complete with money making dodgy-ware, to try and get some money back.
raarky··on Thorium nuclear reactors: a possible solution of the energy crisis? (video)
Google is a pretty large and technically savvy advertising company that does search and a bunch of other things.

If energy costs are eating into their bottom line and they have the cash, why shouldn't they invest into new energy tech. Seems like a good business decision to me

raarky··on What have you developed in your spare time?
I love building stuff at home. It lets you test out all these new technologies i keep hearing about on HN :P

I built http://www.snowboardfinder.com a little while ago using ASP.Net MVC. Now i'm using it to learn more about mongodb and even creating a duplicate version in django just because I love python

coding should be fun and putting your mind to a personal project lets you explore

Yeah, the quality isn't the same as a proper feed but i guess the cost doesnt compare either. CQG seem to do pretty good feeds but i've never tried them
raarky··on HN: I want to trade my finance knowledge for python/django mentorship
There are plenty of "retail" ways to get access to this data, both realtime and historical. For realtime data and trading API access, interactive brokers provide a good service. For pure data feeds, both realtime and historical, check out esignal, cqg or iqfeed.

raarky··on Why Microsoft bought Skype
When I try to call land lines in New Zealand, I consistently get an extremely poor connection.

You get that talk delay which can totally ruin conversation flow.

The internet in NZ pretty bad but it surely can't be that bad. It's kinda made me think about putting on tin foil hat and think there's some kind of Telecom [monopoly telecoms company in nz] shady service degradation going on.

raarky··on Why Microsoft bought Skype
I agree with you. MS and SAP would be a pretty formidable force.

Having said that, MS continue to make very good strides in the business market but they still need to play in the consumer market.

raarky··on Silicon Milkroundabout: Forget the banks, come and join a London startup
Just wanted to back this comment up.

I'm in the same boat - I've contracted at various companies(financial, media, etc etc) and currently working at a startup.

Contract at large companies if you want money. Join a startup if you want lifestyle & scene.

Remember tho, if you work at bank you can still go to some of the many events the scene puts on :)
