r_c_a_d··on [dead]
A medal of honor winner's page on the DoD website has been moved to a URL starting with "dei".

Is this being done automatically to pages containing certain phrases like "gender and racial equality" or did a real person actively decide to do this?

If it's the former then that seems very clumsy; if the latter then it's poor judgement.

r_c_a_d··on Page is under construction: A love letter to the personal website
Yay! We have lots of Bionicles in the house still. My boys used to buy me a new one when I started a new job for my desk - when working in the office was a thing.

Not having your own website is an opportunity missed for techies especially, I think.

"quite a while ago - 2020"

I think in the context of this article, 2020 is very recent. But otherwise, yes I agree.

Incidentally, my own site started out in 1999 as a personal site, became a poster for my writing, then back to a personal site and is now a poster for my tutoring. All the old content is still there, just with a different emphasis https://richardtaylor.co.uk/

r_c_a_d··on UK Parliament undermined the privacy, security, freedom of all internet users
The establishment never acted against Saville in his lifetime. All the public allegations and investigations happened almost a year after his death.
r_c_a_d··on Lincoln Cathedral
Yes, I expected to see something about that. Being from Lincolnshire one of my pet facts is that Lincoln cathedral was the tallest building in the world for over 200 years, until the spire collapsed and wasn't rebuilt.

r_c_a_d··on Lastpass Security Incident
I want to as well, but annoyingly there are many sites that insist on a "special" character because their strength measure says "low" for the 20 character alphanumeric string I generated %-}
r_c_a_d··on The positive effect of walking on creative thinking (2014) [pdf]
I adopted a retired greyhound about 6 months ago and now walk about 200km a month with her. I used to do a lot of cycling and did lots of thinking on long rides, but after 3 crashes this year I'm now riding a lot less and find myself explaining things out loud to the dog on our walks (particuarly the early morning walk). It helps set me up for the day.
r_c_a_d··on Append data to the url query
Yes, I think this is how Wordle did the migration to NY Times without losing game history. The original site did a redirect to nytimes.com/something/wordle?data=X where X was the game history. Quite clever, I thought.
r_c_a_d··on Resumes and cover letters: An extension school resource (2021) [pdf]
I always stick to 2 pages (25 years ~10 jobs) but include the URL of the HTML version of my CV/resume which has the full details of each role. You may need to be creative about how you include the URL... as some recruiters will edit it out if you put it in the header or footer.
r_c_a_d··on Orkut
Totally agree. The infrastructure is already there. In fact, this is what email was when it was a "program" you ran, rather than a web thing, and all your contacts were real people you knew rather than businesses.

Is there an email client that has or could add social features? Do we need someone to create one?

r_c_a_d··on Writing is a single-player game
Maybe try writing a private diary for, say, a year and see what you get. Depending on events you will probably either (a) drift out of the habit after a month or two (b) gain insights into yourself and carry on (c) start to publish selected extracts as a blog/book.

If you become famous then someone will do (c) for you at some point (maybe after you are gone).

r_c_a_d··on A six-month program in Britain will assess the effects of a shorter workweek
I thought the same, but tried it for a month and it didn't work for me. Just as you get two Fridays a week (Tuesday and Friday) it also felt like I had two Mondays (Monday and Thursday). I just ended up hating Thursdays as much or more than Mondays, maybe because I was the only one doing it.

Also, sometimes I need a few days momentum to get something over the line and two days is often not enough. Anyway, just my 2p, more to the point I would totally jump at the chance to have a 4 day week permanently.

r_c_a_d··on Ask HN: Burnt-out, directionless but want to turn it around
Not all "jail time", but yes, many convictions would preclude candidates from employment at my current company... and most of the previous ones.
r_c_a_d··on Ask HN: Burnt-out, directionless but want to turn it around
In 40 years I have only ever put the start and end year of each item on my resume. I guess this dates to when most jobs / education lasted multiple years. But I've stuck with it and no-one has ever questioned it.

The couple of jobs I have had which were less than one year spanned a year-end so it never looked odd.

When I am reviewing incoming resumes small gaps never bother me. Ocassionally I have seen multi-year gaps on interesting resumes and made enquires which always turned out to be completely legitimate career breaks and never lead to us not making offers.

r_c_a_d··on Mental illness, mass shootings, and the politics of American firearms (2015)
As another outsider, I can remember seeing reports of mass shootings in the US every year or two for the last 30 years or so. Each time I thought "this time they have to do something" and yet the pattern continues. So to me it also seems "clear" that there isn't _enough_ will in the US to act on this.
r_c_a_d··on I'm an addict
And for atheists like me, you can still learn a lot from religions. I got a lot out of Alain de Botton's "Religion for Atheists" https://www.librarything.com/work/11370617/book/89008159
r_c_a_d··on Apple is discontinuing the iPod
I agree on the start-stop thing. You need to stop doing that :) I used to get DVDs through the post from LoveFilm and would nearly always watch the movies through to the end, even if they didn't seem great in the first 20 mins. Often I would be glad I stuck with it as many movies are a "slow burn". With streaming there is a constant nagging doubt that I'm missing out on something better and should jump ship if a movie/show doesn't grab me immediately. One way out of this is to force yourself to stick with your choice or do something else (like read a book!) ... that works for me.
r_c_a_d··on Agile and the long crisis of software
I never read it as "removing oversight", more like "removing excessive admin". And it explicitly says to value "individuals and interactions". Part of that means you need a facilitator in retrospectives who can detect conflicts between individuals which may not be being addressed in that forum - and ensure that they are addressed elsewhere.
r_c_a_d··on Agile and the long crisis of software
We had that at Symbian in 2006. It was great. As a scrum master I did later use Jira to manage a backlog along with the product owner, but it was just for the two of us: all the stories were written on cards when they were ready to be worked on by the devs. Epics were also written on cards on a big wall... but each of those had an accompanying document / wiki page.
r_c_a_d··on Airbnb’s design to live and work anywhere
Are you under 40? I think when I was in my 20s and early 30s I would agree on (1). But when I got married and had kids case (2) became optimal, because my social circle filled up with people who had kids of the same age / went to the same school.

The pandemic then pushed me between (2) and (3) - good social circle at work etc.

r_c_a_d··on Are film critics losing sync with audiences?
Before it got killed by Amazon, one of the best things about LoveFilm was that it showed the distribution of user scores for each movie. For many movies the distribution was normal (peak in the middle) and those movies were usually "OK" ... but the interesting ones were the "marmite" movies with lots of 0s and 5s. Both sets would have the same average score, but you could gamble on the marmite ones and maybe get a great movie with a 3 average.

(I also try to avoid reviews before watching)

r_c_a_d··on Teaching how to code is broken
I'm not sure I agree with this argument. Learning stuff by diving in and doing stuff immediately without studying the basics first may be fun and interesting, but it might lead to fundamental gaps and misunderstandings too.

I learned to write code from the bottom up. It was sometimes dull and hard work, but I think in the end I got very good at it.

On the other hand, I learned to play golf by just playing games. It was fun, I got ok quite fast... and then I never got any better. My nephew started playing by having proper lessons and could beat me after a few weeks.

r_c_a_d··on Amazon to stop accepting UK Visa credit cards
Yes, I got one too and thought it was spam.
r_c_a_d··on Reasons to switch from Windows to Linux
I totally agree. I am still a Linux user, but at home I use a Mac now. Why? Because I got sick of having to work out why my laptop couldn't print things anymore after an update. Not once has that happened to the Windows or Apple devices that my family own. Linux is great for doing all sorts of clever stuff; it's not so good at doing the ordinary stuff reliably.
r_c_a_d··on What a crossword AI reveals about humans' way with words
Yes, and fewer crossing letters, so there are usually many more words that will "fit".
r_c_a_d··on Avoiding the audience paradox when writing job descriptions
Because they don't want their current staff who are earning $X to know that they are hiring new people for similar jobs at $X + 10%.
r_c_a_d··on Turing Oversold?
The brits didn't put anyone forward at all, they kept it secret for as long as they could and long after Turing's death.

There is now a memorial at Bletchley Park to the Polish mathematicians who worked on Enigma.

r_c_a_d··on No More Movies
I agree. Also, I used to write movie reviews and found myself thinking about what I was going to write during each movie. Stop writing reviews of all the movies you watch. Just watch. Then, if you feel you really want to write a review, watch the movie again and compose your review. You will probably enjoy those first viewings a lot more; I did.
r_c_a_d··on YouTube blocked chess channel after mistaken detection of racial slurs
One example springs to mind. The racism controversy on Celebrity Big Brother in 2007 led to the sponsor and several advertisers withdrawing. The show was "rested" the following year.

r_c_a_d··on 3 years ago, remote top paying gigs were hard to find. Today they are the norm
I agree. When I worked in London for Nokia I tried to keep to Finland time where possible, as it made things a lot easier. Then they added teams in India and China and it became a nightmare.
