> 1. People who post these stickers should go to prison. 2. People who create and distribute these stickers knowing their purpose should go to prison. 3. Tesla should be civilly liable for cases where preventing such an incident was possible with known technology. 4. Roads should be modified over time to make it more difficult to do this attack.

Translation: everyone else in the universe is responsible for solving my problem, and also I am not responsible for solving my problem, but i do want to profit from the current state of everything being broken all the time, and, i tell my family to keep their hands on the wheel

rStar··on Batteries included with Emacs (2020)
emacs is like a musical instrument in program form. one is only limited by their creativity.
rStar··on Apple sues NSO Group to curb the abuse of state-sponsored spyware
unless you understand how tech, business, governments and security services work, then not so much
rStar··on Apple sues NSO Group to curb the abuse of state-sponsored spyware
> I’m sorry but there’s no world where Apple can make perfect security

i think everyone knows that perfect security is not possible, the operative word being ‘perfect’. i think what we want is for apple to ‘actually try’ to provide security, in some way that results in security order of magnitudes better than we enjoy today, which would still be miles and miles away from ‘perfect’, vulnerable to nation state actors etc etc etc

rStar··on Apple sues NSO Group to curb the abuse of state-sponsored spyware
except thats it’s curiously well timed for this news to drop at the beginning of holiday shopping, like an advertisement, or possibly, this is pure marketing. nso and apple are partners. apple leaves holes, nso exploit, said holes.
rStar··on Apple sues NSO Group to curb the abuse of state-sponsored spyware
apple controls the hardware and software on apple devices. nso does not. this is public relations for apple, as much as a holiday advert as any they put on tv. if apple wanted to provide their customers secure devices, apple would provide their customers secure devices.
rStar··on Apple sues NSO Group to curb the abuse of state-sponsored spyware
apple builds their own hardware and software. security, or lack thereof, is clearly apples choice. apple blaming nso here is pure public relations and optics, nee propaganda, which many on this board drink like the koolaid it is. it’s confirmation bias.
rStar··on Rust Moderation Team Resigns
isn’t that kind of like the press secretary telling the president what to do?
rStar··on Rust Moderation Team Resigns

rStar··on Wearable device senses blood glucose and administers insulin accordingly
i can’t wait till people start getting their internal organs hacked. and they still don’t care about privacy and operational security, and they are still buying their kids iot devices for christmas.
rStar··on Ask HN: Why is the Spotify UX so horrible?
i’m sure we’ll have the joe rogan plan…$30/month for a family plan with no adverts, even on podcasts.
rStar··on Individuals Matter
i have to say though, i do appreciate the well thought out, reasoned and mannerly post. you are very good at arguing your position, so, even though we ultimately disagree, much respect
rStar··on Ask HN: Best way to Google? log out first
startpage gives me a captcha on every search. maybe its because i’m on a vpn. that is a very good solution though, and one of the things that started me thinking in this direction
rStar··on Individuals Matter
> I don't mean that one should be naive about things.

i think that’s the literal disagreement we are having

> I've known a variety of addicts

how bout they try to get more oxy by any means necessary? i think i’m safe. i also think that some people really like to believe the line you’re selling, but that’s all it is. want and belief. some call it faith. whatever you want to call it, it’s wrong.

rStar··on Blacksmith – Rowhammer bit flips on all DRAM devices today despite mitigations
who do we blame for this even being a problem? which engineers at what point in time thought this non error checking non state stable design was a good idea?
rStar··on Individuals Matter
> observations about collectives can be usefully applied to individuals.

> You might be right 80% of the time

or, as in my example of a collective of oxycontin users, you might be able to predict certain of their actions at a 99% efficiency rate, and that may enable you to make statements that apply to the collective as a whole, and as individuals.

rStar··on Individuals Matter
strong disagree. there exist truths on a population level. oxycontin addicts traverse similar behavioral patterns, for example. for the worst of all cognitive biases i would say confirmation bias.
rStar··on Individuals Matter
individuals matter, or, why aren’t we all treated as the special special snowflakes we so obviously believe ourselves to be.

rStar··on To set new tab as blank in MS Edge you need to enroll device in MDM
these lessons aren’t forgotten, we all just have a lot less power now as consumers. ms knows they are so large they can dictate the behavior of all users up to and including the regulatory bodies, all of which they’ve captured. stand up for your freedom, don’t use trash, don’t be the sucker, don’t be the product.
rStar··on To set new tab as blank in MS Edge you need to enroll device in MDM
don’t use software that so obviously disrespects you, the user

mbas see whatever they see for whatever reasons they do. it’s usually posturing and signaling to other mba types, often with delusions of grandeur and napoleon complex, not height based.
rStar··on Individuals Matter
i’ve had one for years. the way you start is, when you meet an asshole, write their name and company and job title down, and a short, less than 20 words, statement describing the assholery. keep doing that for a few years and watch as patterns start to emerge.
rStar··on Individuals Matter
congratulations on finding a comfortable way to work that works for you, allows you to be productive, as well as more socially fulfilled. as someone currently attempting to find a nice niche for myself as well, much respect.
rStar··on Individuals Matter
if your org doesn’t work for you in some fundamental way, find a way out, immediately. you can’t change the board, and the board gives hr it’s marching orders, so if you have management you consider to be terrible and a “clueless” hr team, you have to leave. orgs can evolve over time, but they don’t change for you or your feelings, no matter how smart you are or how justified your feelings.
