rStar··on Individuals Matter
i would say, everyone acts in their interests, at all times, except for individual actors who may value things like the city the work in or loyalty in themselves that may artificially tie them to a situation. i say, if you identify a problem with your organization that you can’t get over, be a grown up, and find another job. seriously, it’s the best thing you can do for yourself. if you feel an organization is rotten, leave. you will never ever fix the rot. if you’ve got bad hr you’ve unfortunately got bad hr, and that’s not your fault, but that also will never, ever, change.
rStar··on Ask HN: Best way to Google? log out first
although with this !g ddg command that’s new to me, maybe ddg with !g is the answer. that being said, if anyone actually used that, i can see google shutting that right down.
rStar··on Ask HN: Best way to Google? log out first
google seems to be the best search engine. google personalization seems to have the same blind spots as I do as an individual, so maybe i’m answering my own question here but I’d love more considered opinions than my own
rStar··on Ask HN: Best way to Google? log out first
google is better than ddg, doesn’t seem close. i try to use ddg a few times a year, get frustrated, and switch back.
rStar··on Ask HN: Best way to Google? log out first
that is amazing and i will have that code on my machine soon. however for purposes of this discussion i’m interested in the best possible search results possible for myself as an individual. my question is more, has google personalized search to the point of diminishing returns. if I log out first, irrespective of surveillance, do i simply get better search results. i know it’s not the best results from an advertiser standpoint, so does that mean it’s not the best for me
rStar··on Software company SAP: World-leading through intellectual property theft?
google search is so personalized now, you only get best in class search if you log out first.
rStar··on Software company SAP: World-leading through intellectual property theft?
well, you are outing yourself as one who doesn’t recognize reality. now, if you are getting a paycheck from google, fine, feed yourself and your family. otherwise you’re a shill dude. live it, love it, waste the only life you have. your choice good for you. like heroin, but more profitable and not as fun.
rStar··on Software company SAP: World-leading through intellectual property theft?
all and all. other things too, but companies naturally want to downplay the impact of those 4 factors
rStar··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
i have an acquaintance from columbia who was deported over a year ago and is now looking to get back into the US to continue treatment for a cancer type ailment. she’s looking for representation if you have a contact number of an attorney that could evaluate her case. she has reasonably strong english as a 2nd or perhaps 3rd language, and I believe she can pay.
rStar··on Making the dislike count private across YouTube
ding ding ding. this is the correct lens through which to view this situation. for anyone who honestly doesn’t understand how straightforward and devastating this argument is, read it again and learn something.
rStar··on Making the dislike count private across YouTube
it helps the advertisers
rStar··on Making the dislike count private across YouTube
this is obviously so advertisers don’t have to deal with ratio’d videos. advertisers like phizer who pay for content on all advertising platforms, and who pay for content like rachel maddow, tucker carlson and meet the press. that content must be seen as legitimate by users who don’t already know that it isn’t. it’s mind control, and it’s at the behest of the monied interests so good luck with your toddlers all you parents. as someone who escaped/survived a cult i figured out a way around mind control, but that’s beyond the ability of most people. I’m Glad I Don’t Have Kids.

I appreciate the effort on that response, and it’s tone, but you describe a joyless situation filled with people without a sense of humor, so even if you’re right that’s quite depressing.
rStar··on When Radiohead sampled Paul Lansky (2000)
songs come together in pieces. mostly. the jre with billy corgan is a great place to hear some real knowledge dropped on this subject. i’ve always appreciated billy corgans approach to songwriting and his willingness to talk about it.
