r3m6··on Chinese can now buy real estate with Bitcoin
Why would you care about in which currency you are paid?
r3m6··on Tekpub Has Been Acquired
Paid and free MOOC do not differ much, but they have can significant advantages over a book, especially for subjects where you do not have already domain expertise:

1. Exercises

2. Community/forums/meetups

3. Exams (with prestigious names behind it)

r3m6··on Barack Obama 'approved tapping Angela Merkel's phone 3 years ago'
If you want to understand why Merkel - and people from all political leanings - are so upset, just watch "The Lives of Others" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3_iLOp6IhM
r3m6··on Barack Obama 'approved tapping Angela Merkel's phone 3 years ago'
Most people expect and accept "007-style" spying for security purposes. But exactly what kind of threat are Germany, France and Brasil to the US? The general suspicion in these countries is that the main motive behind the overzealous NSA activities is state sponsored industrial espionage, which is completely unacceptable.
r3m6··on The End of Stanford?
Today's Nobel prices are the result of work done decades ago.
r3m6··on Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences 2013: Trendspotting in asset markets
Last time I check all the fields you mentioned do controlled experiments.

Example climate science: Have two models, and see which one predicts the next decades better.

r3m6··on The Georgia Tech Online Master of Science in CS is now accepting applications
Only a 100 open slots and potentially 10,000 of applications as it seems they accept applications from all over the world. And there will be no visa issues. That means they might be able to be even more selective than with their regular offline classes. => Very good to give the online degree an initial boost in prestige.
r3m6··on Europe drafts law to ban mobile roaming charges
>They'll sell their subsidiaries roaming at X and their competition roaming at X*1,000.

I doubt that would be legal. Anyone knows for sure?

r3m6··on Kit Kat's homepage is currently a parody of Android announcement page
Parody? This is real: http://www.android.com/kitkat/

(IMHO a bad move for the Android brand, unless teens are their new main target. But let's see...)

r3m6··on Apple’s Commitment to Customer Privacy
"Apple can not decrypt it" - does it mean somebody else can? Or is it encrypted at a level that is virtually unencryptable with today's technology?
r3m6··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2013)

r3m6··on Why Do Chrome Extensions Need to Access All My Data?
The amazing thing here is: A few of my non-programmer friends told me that they would NEVER install a Chrome extension that can access all their data.

At the same time, all of them have no issue at all to install a regular Windows application from, say, Download.com. They are surprised when I tell them that any Windows application can not only access all their data but could also format their hard drive...

To cut a long story short: Google does a good job of educating users. Microsoft should follow (and innovate with a more fine grained security system).

r3m6··on Show HN: API for detecting people, cars, and everyday objects in images
http://www.acstede-test.co.uk/blackhill/images/stories/Lleyn...

Sheeps were detected as horses, faces but not as cats or cars. This seems to be the current state of the art for a general purpose classification. I haven't seen anything better yet (unless you'd specialize in sheep detection)

r3m6··on Canonical announces Ubuntu for smartphones
Mark S. mentions it in the Engadget interview: "If I dock this, I can get the full Ubuntu desktop".
r3m6··on China's mini Apple takes slice of smartphone pie
Xiaomi's phones run Android, so what sets them apart? Just the price?
r3m6··on The Depressing Day After You Get TechCrunched
Ignoring TechCrunch (and other high profile blogs) is bad advice.

Right, the traffic you will get from them surprisingly low, but they are a fantastic source of instant social proof - After all, you must be good, otherwise they would not cover you, would they? ... ;)

A TC logo/quote on your home page can improve conversion rates for years to come.

This social proof is especially useful if you are self-funded, and can not show off your "Received X millions from Sequoia/YC/Whatever..." badge of honor.

r3m6··on Free worldwide calls for a month
Skype is peer to peer. That this THE clever invention that put them ahead of all competing services when they launched. They can scale without any significant additional bandwidth or server costs.
r3m6··on Starbucks, Google and Amazon: the tax crash of Monday afternoon
First, I wonder if you would quote the same sources if Amazon, Google,Starbucks would move the money from the USA to Europe and not the other way around.

Second, everyone knows that this "sorry, we have to pay royalties" thing is most likely legal, but a very grey area. It certainly is against the spirit of the law. A company whose main product is "we make you feel good" should not use such tactics in their own interest.

r3m6··on Kim Dotcom now plans to give New Zealand free broadband pipe to US
"Think Big" certainly applies to Kim Dotcom ;)
r3m6··on Google Passes Microsoft’s Market Value as PC Loses to Web
Every HN reader knows that. But "normal" web users do not know it (anymore?). Every so often I see some anecdotal evidence of that when I watch people doing searches.
r3m6··on Google Passes Microsoft’s Market Value as PC Loses to Web
Yep. Google is still a one trick pony when it comes to revenue:

Advertising revenue in 2011 was 97 percent of Google's revenue!

r3m6··on Samwers Clone Stripe
Everybody is taking about Stripe. But how is Stripe different from existing/established services like Digital River or Plimus?
r3m6··on Samwers Clone Stripe
haha....actually they DID want to buy StudiVZ :-)

But the VZ owner, Holtzbrinck, did not want to sell at this time. Obviously a huuuuge mistake in hindsight. Only after that refusal FB started to sue VZ.

r3m6··on The Differences Between Germany and the United States
The key is that the basics are covered (like in most of Europe)

100% of poor people in Germany own a health insurance

0% own a house (you have to use up your own money first)

100% own a washing machine (paid for by the government)

50& own a car (my guess, but you dont really need it in big cities)

r3m6··on Yuri Milner's Fundamental Physics Prize
The similarity is striking: Nobel donated his prizes to combat his bad conscious about the horrible "side effects" of his invention, the dynamite. I would not be surprised if Millner has a similar motivation. If so, he should be open about it up front (like Nobel was).
r3m6··on Ask HN: I'm desperate to stay in Denmark. Anyone need a great web/ios dev?
Broaden your search: If you find work with any company in continental Europe (=> Schengen area!) the work visa will allow you to live in Denmark. You could, for example, work remotely for a company in Germany.

For example in Germany, most IT jobs with a salary over 40000 Euro/Year qualify for a work visa (first three years, then unlimited).

r3m6··on Paid Vacation? That’s Not Cool. You Know What’s Cool? Paid, Paid Vacation.
Except that you could use that money for everything you wanted. So many (most?) people simply saved it and viewed it as part of their regular salary.

The new thing here is that you MUST spend the money for something fun. So it is more than just money. Its like a free lunch. They always taste better than the ones I have to pay for ;)

r3m6··on Google Launches Compute Engine To Take On Amazon Web Services
Somehow... with the Google product price changes (price hikes!) in maps and app engine, I am not sure if they have enough credibility left to pull this off.
