r-w··on C++ Asynchronous Framework
What makes you think it’s a clone rather than a case of not-invented-here syndrome?
r-w··on TomTom to cut 10% of jobs due to improved automation
Which makes you wonder if there must be some good reason why they’re still doing it.
r-w··on How Uber Uses Zig
Two words: vertical integration.
r-w··on Netflix’s bad habits have caught up with it
Or a brand. Look how far branding got Apple!

r-w··on A clean start for the web (2020)
If there is a document web, it needs to have paid subscriptions baked in. Like a 404 page but for those who aren’t paying subscribers, and maybe even a way to show an article preview.

That’s the only way monetization would work, other than selling personal data or relying on goodwill. And like it or not, profitability is a necessary part of writing for the web, for many people and almost all organizations.

r-w··on The time SUSE, the German Linux company, banned mentioning Jewish holidays
That's a national holiday in another country. This is different.
r-w··on 10 years since Google said to “hang tight” about Linux support for Google Drive
Isn’t there some saying about analysts and how they often tell you what’s already the case, but almost never tell you what’s possible? I feel like that applies here.
r-w··on 10 years since Google said to “hang tight” about Linux support for Google Drive
Syncthing?
r-w··on Avoidance of sun exposure as a risk factor for major causes of death (2016)
It is an issue with the media. It's also predictable. If you name your article in a way you know will get blown out of proportion in that way, you are complicit.
r-w··on Bolt founder on Stripe/YC
Or if we're keeping with the movie references, "I do not think that means what you think it means."
r-w··on T-Mobile begins blocking iPhone users from enabling iCloud Private Relay in US
To be fair, you could make the same argument that TLS is moot because everything at the other layers (routing, application, and even hardware) is extremely vulnerable to attack. MITM is still a very real thing.

If anything makes it moot, it's not other technology; it's social engineering attacks.

r-w··on T-Mobile begins blocking iPhone users from enabling iCloud Private Relay in US
Here is what your comment boils down to:

"A."

"But B!"

>> "But still, A." <<

r-w··on T-Mobile begins blocking iPhone users from enabling iCloud Private Relay in US
Google Fi uses T-Mobile in the background. Depending on what you mean by "service probably isnt [sic] as good", you may either be wrong or be making a niche point.

What, so now displaying an error message means you're responsible for the error? See some of the other threads about why Apple might not like playing dirty to go behind T-Mobile's back--each one needs the other for its good reputation.
r-w··on macOS Setup after 15 Years of Linux
> If a user's use case would be suited well by ChromeOS

Do you know anyone like this? All such people I know prefer the UX on iPad.

r-w··on Ask HN: Where to Blog?
Just start writing. Publish it somewhere, anywhere. GitHub Pages is probably the easiest for you, and may help if Medium leaves a bad taste in your mouth. You can host it from your own domain later with minimal changes.

Why are you dismissing Substack, by the way? There isn't a single platform on earth that will conjure up a readership from nothing, and Substack is no exception. It seems like it would be fine for your purposes, I don't see any reason to reject it either.

My advice: stop procrastinating and start writing. I used to be in the same place as you. GitHub Pages + Jekyll are your friends.

r-w··on The Io Language
> When I reached this point in the project, I found there was no clear path to translating what I'd developed into a static language (C++) because many of the ideas and systems I'd created in Io simply couldn't be expressed in C++ - or they made no sense there.

I’ve had a very similar experience with Haskell.

r-w··on Skillsoft Buys Codecademy for $525M
But should most people do it primarily for that reason? At the end of my 4½ years, I think not.
r-w··on Third High Severity CVE in Log4j Is Published
I’m not interested in kicking the can down the lane, I just want this stuff to be sustainable.
r-w··on Open letter from the BMJ to Mark Zuckerberg
I think people kept it taboo for as long as they could because: people were literally dying due to low vaccination rates, which were caused in large part by such specious conspiracy theories. Fact checkers did not do a 180, it is still widely considered a conspiracy theory, and its very existence harms public health even if there's a remote possibility it's true.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COVID-19_lab_leak_theory

“Some scientists agree that the possibility of a lab leak should be examined as part of the ongoing investigations into the origin of COVID-19, though they have expressed concerns about the risks of politicization.”

They also don't listen anymore, thanks to echo chambers.

No, half of everyone is below median :)
r-w··on Ambiguous PNG Packer: Craft PNG files that appear different in Apple software
I wonder if ZFS falls prey to the same issue. I've heard good things about it otherwise.
r-w··on Ambiguous PNG Packer: Craft PNG files that appear different in Apple software
File format support is baked into the OS. Apple actually makes static linking very difficult for exactly this reason--so they can reliably introduce support for new file formats on OS upgrade, rather than some apps needing to catch up.
r-w··on Quadratic voting: A mathematical method that could offer a fairer way to vote
That's government by the majority, not the whole. Democracy is “a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state” (OED; emphasis added).
r-w··on BusKill – A USB kill cord for laptops
Won’t do much against my $5 pair of scissors!
r-w··on BusKill – A USB kill cord for laptops
I don't think either of has met someone who engages in actual torture, but I imagine they rarely, if ever, “give up”.
r-w··on Show HN: We open sourced our new Mac developer setup script
This is fantastic!!! Also: no love for fish? ;)
r-w··on This website has 81% battery power remaining
Or, in keeping with the spirit of the post: think long-term and give the battery a chance to rest, then read it later :)
