r-w··on Audio tapes reveal mass rule-breaking in Milgram's obedience experiments
I guess evil is even more banal than we thought!
r-w··on Audio tapes reveal mass rule-breaking in Milgram's obedience experiments
I don't know about "much more reserved"... Citation needed. In the absence of evidence otherwise I assume academics are just people.

r-w··on AI coding is gambling
A graphical means of writing and manipulating a program.
r-w··on AI coding is gambling
Exactly. There's a probabilistic machine in between you and every instruction that gets executed, without exception. It's straight up different.
r-w··on AI coding is gambling
Yes. You are doing any of the work yourself rather than instructing someone else on how to do it.
r-w··on Stop Sloppypasta
Why bake it into the prompt when a regex will do?
r-w··on Jolla on track to ship new phone with Sailfish OS, user-replaceable battery
AI slop article with telltale signs of poor writing that no one bothered editing. Better one from El Reg here dating back to last December: https://www.theregister.com/2025/12/15/jolla_sailfish_5_hand... Not sure why this is back in the news again now after almost 3 months, but Wired also has a more recent article here: https://www.wired.com/story/jolla-phone-2026/
r-w··on LibreSprite – open-source pixel art editor
What value is the license adding here? Sprite editors are never going to be enshittified, in fact I believe underfunding is more of a concern. I'd rather go with one that acknowledges this tension and promises sustainability like Aseprite, rather than one that undercuts that sustainability in favor of nominal openness.

I'm pretty sure letting people control their own products and lives is a mistake the tech industry does not plan on making again.
r-w··on Layoffs at Block
How magnanimous of him to let us all know of his magnanimity!
r-w··on Micropayments as a reality check for news sites
> Per-article pricing would expose that 90% of online journalism is commodity rewrites of AP wire stories.

And recommendations for products they've never tried, with affiliate links.

r-w··on In Search of a Discord Replacement
I think Fluxer just became a more likely candidate. Its maintainer just committed to removing its CLA[1] once the rewrite's done.

It also has screen sharing[2], which Stoat doesn't have yet[3], though it doesn't support casting audio yet. Also, the mobile app implementation can't arrive soon enough!

r-w··on AI makes the easy part easier and the hard part harder
Exactly. If you have the decency to ask, you probably have the capacity to be courteous beyond the minimum required by law.
r-w··on A few random notes from Claude coding quite a bit last few weeks
I think that’s called “consulting”.
r-w··on Toll roads are spreading in America
Pretty sure high fines would greatly incentivize increased enforcement.
r-w··on A guide to local coding models
I bet you could do the same thing with pandoc and skip serializing to HTML entirely.
r-w··on Hack Club strikes a promotion deal with Hacker News
Thanks for chiming in to provide some clarity, Dan. Any comments on this?

> it will be manually boosted in the algorithm by them.

The intentions are of course good, but a little transparency around these manual boosts would be appreciated.

r-w··on Hologram: A full-stack isomorphic Elixir web framework
I don't think that's a full-stack framework?
r-w··on Nobody cares
What city are you in? Or state / general region, if you'd rather not share.

Huh? Why can't you just regulate the flow of private funds to public servants and leave it at that? Not sure why you seem to be arguing that passing one bill expands the power of government as a whole.

r-w··on Mozilla has fired their Chief Product Officer after cancer diagnosis
Brave with the shady features switched off. There’s still some privacy burden on the user, but it’s no comparison with Chrome and they’re pushing the envelope on privacy in other aspects.

Firefox forks are another option, depending on your reasons for avoiding the original.
