qwertz123··on We invited a man into our home at Christmas and he stayed with us for 45 years
Oh I‘m definitely crying. What a touching story.

For now, it‘s just a potential concept. Article in German: https://futurezone.at/digital-life/strommasten-hirsch-stoch-...
qwertz123··on Ask HN: What are your opinions and experiences coding on a 13“ or 15” laptop?
For a convertible bag + backpack, I have a Qwstion bag: http://www.qwstion.com

For a more ergonomic backpack when I have to walk more and carry a lot, I use a booq backpack (booq boa because I wanted it to have hip belts).

qwertz123··on Ask HN: What are your opinions and experiences coding on a 13“ or 15” laptop?
I have worked on everything between a 11" Macbook Air and a 17" Macbook Pro. I recently switched from a 13" MBP to the 15" one. Both had 16 GB of RAM but for my work, the quad core CPU that is only available in the 15" models made a noticeable difference and I'm happier now.

Portability: I travel a lot and the 15" is too heavy but the 13" Macbook Pro was heavy as well and in combination with everything else I'm carrying around, the difference doesn't really matter. I got a nice bag that I can convert to a backpack instead. The 15" doesn't feel very "clunky" to me. I was worried that I wouldn't want to sit on the couch with it like I used to with my 13" but here I am and I like it.

Screen size: the 15" screen is a little bit more convenient but the 13" was no problem for me either, you get used to it.

I would never do 11 or 17 " again, the 13 and 15" are both ok to work on.

qwertz123··on Eating habits – parsing the moral language of modern diets
I have the same two beliefs and another one: 3) Everything in moderation.

All the things that we belief to "know" today could once again be proven wrong tomorrow. Just because someone claims that butter, coconut oil, bacon or almond meal is healthy, that doesn't mean you have to go crazy with it and eat large amounts of it daily. Or the other way around: just because some people think that dairy or grains are harmful, for a lot of people it may not be an issue at all to eat them every once in a while (at least if someone is able to e.g. eat only one slice of sourdough bread and then not go carb crazy; I'm not).

I just think given the fact how often we've been wrong in the past, it is smarter to decrease risks by not overusing any kind of food group.

I'm not sure if you can count frozen food as "processed food"? If I wash and cook a tomato, I would still count that as an unprocessed food, wouldn't I? So frozen food is still unprocessed in my opinion. Either that or no one except for raw foodists who don't wash their food eats unprocessed food.

And of course: freshly harvested vegetables beat frozen ones.

qwertz123··on Takashi Amano, nature photographer and aquascaper, has died
I can't think of anyone else who inspired me as much as Mr. Amano throughout my life (I'm obviously more passionate about aquariums than about coding). I admire his work, his way of viewing things differently and how he revolutionised aquascaping and turned it into an art form with its own philosophy.

The world was a little bit more beautiful than it would have been without him.

qwertz123··on Chemistry of Cast Iron Seasoning (2010)
I tried the potato method and am not pleased with the results at all. I'm going to try one of the oil based approaches instead, they sound far less messy.
qwertz123··on Amazon Prime Air
My dog would definitely try to take it out but it's the same as with cats: I would be more worried about the old guy losing an eye than hurting the cat. Those rotor blades look pretty dangerous to me.
qwertz123··on Zoomquilt
When you watch the whole thing and look at some other page afterwards, it's moving in the opposite direction.

I found the artistic aspect and the amount of work that must have gone into this project more interesting than the technological aspect. There are 15 participating artists though so at least they could split the work.

qwertz123··on Show HN: Floobits – Remote pair programming done right
That's great. You can't believe how much I'm looking forward to that!
qwertz123··on You do not need a DSLR to take nice looking photos, your phone will suffice
While these are "nice" pictures, it's still obvious that these are taken with a crappy camera and that a good DSLR, combined with someone who know how to use it, could create significantly better results.

Of course I love the fact that today I always have my phone with me for snapshots that I would have missed otherwise but my phone is no replacement for my better cameras (a sony rx1 and my canon 5d that I both enjoy a lot) and it won't be for the foreseeable future.

Go ahead and take your wedding pictures with your iphone and let me know what you think of that decision 10 years from now.
