qwerty_clicks··on It's not a crime if we do it with an app
The era of trump will accelerate this further. Not that Obama Biden were saviors, Trump and co are putting fuel on the fire
qwerty_clicks··on The protester's guide to smartphone security
Almost too many steps to remember here. Would it be possible for an app to prompt you to do all this? An app can bring up settings to allow your camera access, why not to quickly change those other settings?

What apps do you recommend with p2p messaging?
qwerty_clicks··on Coke, PepsiCo Lobby to Keep Sugary Sodas in Food-Stamp Program
Just because you can put something in your mouth and it’s roughly processed by your body doesn’t mean it should be considered food. These companies have created chemical cocktails and labeled them as food.

That’s just such a bad argument. Anything can be a slippery slope so no one should do anything.
qwerty_clicks··on Car tires shed a quarter of all microplastics in the environment
And noise pollution! Even electric cars (which are quite heavy and produced a lot of tire wear) create loud roaring at moderate to high speeds for anyone the car is passing.
qwerty_clicks··on Car tires shed a quarter of all microplastics in the environment
Tires these days are expensive. To make them cheaper, they have reduced quality as well. Likely wearing faster and with worse material

Semi’s drive 12+ hours a day most days of the year. Passenger cars just go to work and they store and back.

qwerty_clicks··on Why don't we use awnings anymore (2022)
It’s greed for money and lack of care about designing decent society. It is cheaper for a developer to build with less anything. More sqr ft by building a bigger boxier flat to the property line with no eves. Since American's don’t see eves or awnings anymore, they couldn’t expect them.

qwerty_clicks··on Cyclist hit by driverless Waymo car in San Francisco, police say
The system and society built and maintained for cars is the problem. Not robot or human drivers.

qwerty_clicks··on A mineral produced by plate tectonics has a global cooling effect, study finds
This is a bit too simplistic and frankly bizarre without accounting for the whole earth system or well established science. Petroleum geologists have very we characterized that association of clays with organic carbon. Finding source rock is #1 in O&G exploration. Additioanlly, there is clear evidence for orbital forcing of climate via milankovich cycles. Pinning it all on plate tectonics is strange without mentioning other factors. It doesn’t really lay out that erosion of mineral rich rocks and high bathymetric relief are associated with organic production. Also that preservation is associated with rapid burial from higher rainfall/erosion and basin containers also in found in tropical transpressional and convergent margins. Additionally cooling temps may create a differential that increases ocean currents momentum and rate of upwelling (thus more production and preservation). This is well known in the Miocene and other periods. Because this happens near the tropics (there is erosion, life, and so on at the poles due to lower differentials) is not news. Overall are very unique situations where organic carbon is preserved, some can be associated with clays and some ice ages. But far from a paradigm shift. I think it’s just a bumbled headline.
qwerty_clicks··on How We'll build sustainable, scalable, secure infrastructure for an AI future
Similar tones to oil companies ‘advancing energy progress’. They refuse to feel any pain in the transition and will only hold society hostage to maintain shareholder profits. It’s a twisted story that they rely on the free market to fix the issues while demanding tax credits and government research freebies while still manipulating legislation to their favor in every step.
qwerty_clicks··on How We'll build sustainable, scalable, secure infrastructure for an AI future
My thoughts on all of Microsoft’s sustainability objectives and claims too. Invest in about 10% real flashy offsets but buy some credits so sweep the rest under the carpet

GV numbers commonly don’t work. Somehow they are identified as a sort of virtual (VIOP) number.

qwerty_clicks··on Two men die in Ironman Cork competition in Ireland
Very sad but it’s not that uncommon. Swimming as fierce and excited pack in open water results in a lot of people getting kicked and thrashed. If you get knocked silly or not even, it’s probably similar to getting trampled but then drowning.
qwerty_clicks··on Ask HN: Is making a self taught transition to AI/ML related fields possible?
I'm working for one of the top energy companies. Have a BS and MS in Geology and worked in that for over 10 years, but have since moved towards data science. My title is now data scientist but I assure you I'm no where near a FANG DS.

I started just learning python, learning and implementing Azure tools, taking more ML classes, taken bootcamps, working on projects at home, and working with auto-ML like data robot. I've only ever been able to actually implement simple analytics and basic NLP from scripts I wrote and packaged them up into PowerBI or such. Our company isn't really a tech company and it's easy to impress with simple improvements.

So I feel like a phony data scientist and that I couldn't pass a heavy duty pure data scientist interview at another company. However, it seems so clear that there is a big need to bridge this space with a pretty good understanding of DS concepts and approaches wit subject matter expertise, plus a lot of user friendly auto-ML or Azure tools. And it's pretty easy to get chatGPT to build boilerplate code that I can't figure out. Really not too hard to work with the OpenAI API in python. I just need a decent team to work with to help bring things into the system of production. Which is a horrible problem and mess here.

I'm sure I could float around inside this company for years but now I wonder what can I do outside? Am I a data science informed imperilment? Am I a low-level data analytics generalist? I have a strong work ethic, great personal and project management skills, and can eventually do anything I set my mind to. I feel like any company could benefit from my skills but I don't fit the bill for hiring typical DS roles. Product management seems like a path, although not the most fruitful if you want to actually do some work.

Maybe others find themselves in the place or have made these self-taught transitions to the grey areas. Other thoughts?

qwerty_clicks··on An experimental beach barrier could be key to rebuilding eroding coastlines
Beach impermanence is a fact. Longshore current and erosion baffles are not new concepts. Encouraging people to just dump rubble on their beaches could have a lot of unforeseen consequences. This sort of citizens science mirrors anti-vax journalism.
