qwerpy··on James Dyson Sold Us on a $400 Hair Dryer. Now He's Trying a $499 Toothbrush
Needs special toothpaste and rinse, both of which Dyson will conveniently sell you. Don’t know if it’s actually good or not, but it seems everyone wants in on the subscription model.
qwerpy··on Introducing Ad Blocker for Firefox on iOS
Also they say they will continue to show Firefox’s sponsored links and ads. So, they’ll continue to show first party ads and google’s ads? And likely they won’t be able to keep up with meta’s anti ad blocking. That’s most ads on the internet. No thanks, I’ll stick to ublock origin lite on safari.
qwerpy··on Introducing Ad Blocker for Firefox on iOS
I’m doing it right now. It does pause when you switch away from safari but you swipe down to get the control center and then resume play.
qwerpy··on Lawmakers added $1 to car insurance policies. That money paid for Flock cameras
Strange that someone else’s question “Did it reduce catalytic converter theft?”, directly relevant to the article, got downvoted to death. Not sure if we’re meant to have discussions here or just dutifully complain about topics that are fashionable to complain about.
qwerpy··on Global demand for sand spawned a worldwide boom in illegal mining (2015)
Pretty sure this is a joke but you never quite know, given that HN is infamous for these "javascript programmer applies his smarts to something that's not javascript" moments.
qwerpy··on An ongoing 3D-printer AGPL violation
LAN mode works well with home assistant and some HACS Bambu integration. Takes some setup but then you get real time camera feed and all the nice sensors for temp, humidity, including any AMS you have. I connected mine to Bambu server for the app just to see what it does, and my home assistant setup still works over LAN. Great printers and for now offline modes work well.
qwerpy··on Wiped out: US faces surging toilet paper prices amid trade war with Canada
Today’s America/Trump bashing HN group therapy session brought to you by Canada and toilet paper.
qwerpy··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
There is something not right with many Seattle-area residents. Some weird combination of anger issues, low self-esteem, and terrible driving skills. I moved to SoCal earlier this year and have seen much less rage and incompetence on the roads. I don’t get flipped off on a daily basis anymore for driving a particular polarizing electric car. No more pairs of Subarus going 5-10 under, blocking the whole road and inducing rage in the lineup of cars.
qwerpy··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
If someone’s forcing society to pay for their living expenses, it only seems fair for society to force them to labor to cover the expenses.

I’m sure the next objection will be “what, so you’re going to concentrate them in some kind of camp?” Yes because that’s the smart thing to do with a large scale problem. Use scalable solutions.

qwerpy··on OpenAI: GPT 5.6 Sol price reduction (until at least Nov 21)
Easy to get there without doing anything abnormal, 2 EVs and a large 5 bedroom house that gets air conditioned / heated, in a location that does time of use pricing. My bill is closer to $200/mo but if I didn’t have solar & battery it’d be in the $400 range.
qwerpy··on Andreessen Horowitz is investing billions into a bleak future
It’s done wonders for my free time and mood by deleting my Reddit account and restricting HN to toilet time. Instead of reading rage bait American news I do a daily scan of BBC. All those are sources of negativity and stress that bring nothing of value to your life. I invest my newfound time and energy into my family, hobbies, and health.
qwerpy··on Claudette: Make Claude stop talking like a BuzzFeed article
I know I’ll get a “it’s almost as if HN is made up of different people” for this. But It’s hilarious seeing the chiding about berating LLMs interposed with the unhinged rants and screeching on here whenever anything remotely political comes up.
qwerpy··on Vomit: Clean up Claude 5's token output with a separate LLM
HN's mood is usually sour about everything, but can be temporarily influenced by emotionally-charged (usually political) events. The anti-US administration boost wore off and now we're back to being sour about Anthropic. It's time for Dario to tweet something antagonistic towards the administration or endorse some fashionable political candidates.
qwerpy··on Cursor launches Origin, GitHub alternative
Once a conversation has turned low effort I’m happy to “wrestle with the pigs” and get muddy.
qwerpy··on Cursor launches Origin, GitHub alternative
Seeing the low-effort Reddit-tier snipes on every single post remotely related to him is tiring. I don't think it's a lot to ask of the supposedly intelligent, logical HN crowd to keep the outrage limited to posts that specifically discuss those topics.
qwerpy··on Cursor launches Origin, GitHub alternative
Reddit is that way ——->
qwerpy··on Being ambitious and being a dad
The “reality has a liberal bias” crowd gets pretty quiet when biology comes up.
qwerpy··on Babies born under sugar rationing grew into adults with lower cancer risk
I'm curious about if zero-sugar sweeteners have the same effect. From a cursory (AI-aided) query, it seems that there is much less long-term addiction compared to real sugar because the long-term effects are more coupled to the fact that real sugar decomposes to glucose and it's the glucose that causes those neuroadaptations. Artificial sweeteners have other side effects of course, but it seems like sugar has the worst long-term impact.
qwerpy··on Cursor launches Origin, GitHub alternative
He’s trying to do his job and the angry mob predictably came in to bully an easy target about unrelated things. Just take a look at some of the (thankfully flagged, mostly) responses.
qwerpy··on The Amazon tax
This is egregious. I would be livid if I drove 20 minutes to an ad buyer's location instead of the actual address, after putting in the actual address to google maps. This is completely the opposite of what a map should be doing for you.

If you can, use Apple maps for now, although Apple has proudly proclaimed that they will be serving ads in maps soon. I also refuse to use the maps.app.goo.gl short links that google maps always wants to send. They will trap you in the compromised google search ecosystem. Insist on using raw addresses. I will paste in the raw address every time someone in a group chat sends a goo.gl link.

qwerpy··on Stripe Clinches over $7B Deal to Buy AI Firm OpenRouter
> Netflix, Oracle, Oracle

Well that brings back some memories. I remember there was a third Oracle in that chain, but he left earlier compared to the others.

qwerpy··on The case for overhauling American science
Weird seeing such emotionally charged angry comments.
qwerpy··on Grok 4.6 scores 61 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index
Nah, I think I'll keep calling it out when people keep going on political tangents. Maybe my whining will help everyone save some time.
qwerpy··on Grok 4.6 scores 61 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index
It's fine to make your own choices about what you want to spend your money on. But it gets old to constantly have actual technical discussion drowned out by the same repetitive low-effort comments in every single post. I want to hear about what people have used Grok for, how it compares to other models, what it's not good at, etc., without having to wade through all the predictable "Elon bad" comments.

@dang - feature request for HN: have a "Thunderdome" section for the off-topic political commentary on the site, and once enough people flag something for being political, it gets detached and moved to the Thunderdome. People can let off steam there and the rest of us can have a nice clean place to read about tech.

qwerpy··on Grok 4.6 scores 61 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index
I recently decided to get an AI subscription and evaluated Grok vs chatgpt. Went with Grok because it's all-around good enough at day to day stuff, integrates with my Tesla, and the image/video generation is great. Kids love whimsical videos of them riding dinosaurs.

Feedback: I'd like Grok to have more connectors (I see OpenAI just added Apple Health, that would be nice to have, and I wish it could read my Onenote notebooks) and for existing ones to be improved. I gave it access to my gmail and asked it "what was my last electricity bill?". It failed to find it, even when I told it the exact subject line to search for. Something about not getting any data back when trying to get the email contents.

qwerpy··on Grok 4.6 scores 61 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index
The issue is that this is supposed to be a tech discussion forum and many of us don’t want to be repeatedly beaten over the head with other people’s politics. Plenty of other places to be political, we just wish this wasn’t one of them.
qwerpy··on Grok 4.6 scores 61 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index
When you make politics a big part of your identity, you can’t help but to inject it everywhere. It’s glaringly weird and annoying for those of us who are apathetic and just want to talk about tech, but that’s how it has been for a few years.
qwerpy··on US hires over 2k video gamers as air traffic controllers
Reddit is way worse. At least we pretend to be here for tech discussions, even if we can’t help but get baited by politics most of the time.
qwerpy··on Woman pulled over twice after Flock-linked software connected her to homicide
I’d be happy to contribute to this effort, be it financial or technical or just uploading my video sources (home camera feeds and Teslas). I’m retired with young kids and community safety is a top priority for me. Some local police departments here (Orange County) would probably appreciate this as well.

I’ve always thought millions of camera-equipped cars on the road combined with AI/ML would be an excellent tool for catching criminals.

qwerpy··on The SpaceX Sham
@cdrnsf is posting negative articles all you do? isn't it exhausting to bathe in negativity all day long?
