> I agree, but it won’t happen.

Okay, then I will just use the website then. Their choice. I'm just picking among options offered to me, and I'm not exactly swimming in cash.

Maybe they can start with a $50 tax deduction for every $25 passport photo I take at CVS.

qurren··on AI Passport Photo
No, but people in the USA love overcharging for stuff, charge 10% taxes on top of it (that should have been paid out of the overcharged price), then ask you for 18%, 25%, or 30% tips on top of that with puppy face, then ask if you want to round up to donate to some no-name children's foundation.
qurren··on AI Passport Photo
> That’s the main reason you should not use a service like this to save 25 bucks. You might be aiding organised crime and/or foreign governments in obtaining travel documents which allow them to hide their true identity.

If foreign governments is the threat model, then my government should offer a free passport photo service that supports all countries' specs, and put the $25 guys out of business.

qurren··on AI Passport Photo
How is it a photo of "not you"? This looks to me like AI brightness/contrast/cropping and not generative AI.

And no I'm not paying $25 for some idiot at CVS to rip me off and do extremely little work. They also are not knowledgeable about the passport photo requirements of all these countries and they don't deserve $25.

This is IMO one of those jobs that should be replaced by AI.

qurren··on I don't want the details
Sometimes the real reason is "overscoped work", "no time to fix tech debt", "information silos", "people being protective rather than collaborative", "people overloaded and losing sleep" -- all problems the SVP needs to fix.

Yep this is what I did as well. I also just close tabs if it ever pops up a "sign up for our newsletter" thing.

Why do I have to feed my e-mail into the model?

qurren··on Show HN: Training a model to identify AI web content from structure alone
Personally I don't actually care if it's human slop or AI slop. If it's slop it's slop and I don't want to read it.

The amount of slop on the internet was on the rise well before AI, actually.

qurren··on There's a high chance of devices being sold with GrapheneOS preinstalled in 2027
FWIW the financial institutions I use (all major US brokerages) have no issues with Google attestation, and if they implemented it I'd just move all my assets out to a different one.

I don't regularly use an actual bank account anymore, the cash management solutions from these brokerages work great and can do everything including direct deposit, payments, wire transfers, and ATM/debit cards, and have SIPC protection in place of FDIC.

Apple is just Stockholm Syndrome at scale. I wouldn't trust anything they say about privacy, especially given how closed their ecosystem and hardware is.
qurren··on Singapore’s National Library Board offers micropayments to build reading habits
I've worked in Singapore before. It's not a chill work culture there either. In fact it's about the same.
qurren··on Singapore’s National Library Board offers micropayments to build reading habits
Not Singapore specifically but in today's AI/tech world if you're not constantly working you're on the firing line.

I'm in the Bay Area. It's Sunday morning and I'm working becasue I still need to pay for food, rent, and enormous medical bills and don't want to get fired, and I got yelled at by my director this morning on Slack because I'm not delivering fast enough despite squashing 12 months' worth of work into 4.

I don't have time for books. Finding time for even exercise is hard.

qurren··on Singapore’s National Library Board offers micropayments to build reading habits
They're going to have to try a lot harder than $1 for 50 days worth of reading, in a world where any time taken off from work is a risk.
qurren··on RSA-896
There's about 900 BTC remaining for anyone who breaks these keys:

https://privatekeys.pw/puzzles/bitcoin-puzzle-tx

If you break one though be careful when redeeming it, there are bots set up to pounce and steal the coins when they are transacted because the reduced entropy makes that possible. You need to submit the transaction to a mining pool that will not broadcast it until it is mined.

qurren··on RSA-896
> it would make more financial sense to mine crypto

GPUs are power-inefficient for mining most crypto so not necessarily. You may end up paying more in electricity than you are able to mine.

Most crypto mining is on ASICs now.

qurren··on Show HN: Share your AI Setup, Learn from others
Exactly this. I've worked hard year after year, paid too much taxes, and still haven't gotten job security in return. Living costs are still rising.

No thanks to sharing anything for free.

Maybe once I have retirement levels of money, and when I'm not actually working for the money, I'll be interested in sharing.

Given what we can do today with LLMs it would be even cooler if it thought of some actually good business ideas and created the website with mockups of them.
qurren··on Apple Reference Image: A New Approach for Verified Photography
I think the biggest downside here is we're moving toward a world in which only Apple and Google and a few other privileged manufacturers can make cameras.

Related: It is also moving toward a world where the US effectively becomes the world judge of truth

qurren··on Richat Structure
I wouldn't believe that claim either if there is no archeological evidence, but I'm wondering why there isn't actually some civilization that walked by, said "this shit is cool", and built a city there.

If I was an ancient pharoah I certainly would have ordered a city built there. Maybe with a nice pyramid in the middle instead of some burning man

qurren··on Richat Structure
Kinda wonder why ancient people didn't look at that and turn it into a massive amphitheatre or a mythical city.
qurren··on Don't call yourself an artisanal programmer
In food contexts when I see "artisinal" I usually just think of rich white people buying the same stuff in nicer packaging and typography for twice the price.

The actual artisans don't need to advertise themselves as artisans, they just sell shit.

You will never get explicit permission unless you have connections. So until that kind of beaurocracy changes, this is the kind of thing you just go ahead and do.

Life is short, assuming it is fully non-destructive and leave-no-trace, just do it until someone gets in your way.

qurren··on One resignation turned the embers of AI fear into a wildfire
I don't keep assets in USD. I also don't think civilization collapse is the same as an economic collapse. In fact I don't think we'll have a long term economic collapse, but the new economy will be run by AI and will be absolutely terrifying for anyone who still needs to work for that AI to survive.
qurren··on Don't let anyone take away your big box of cables
I have a few of those too. My laser cutter needs one. I've seen lots of "expensive equipment" use USB A-to-A cables, for some odd reason.

qurren··on Show HN: What if the speed of light was 5 km/h?
> measured relative to the rest frame of the CMB

> preferred

While these are meaningful conventions, they are being measured with respect to that rest frame.

The local group moves at some few hundred km/s velocity relative to the CMB, so the age of the universe in our reference frame will be slightly shorter than that preferred frame. Call it ~10^-7 shorter but still ever so slightly shorter. That was my point.

> well better they be the ones in poverty and not me

I'm not this extreme, and don't wish for others to be in poverty.

But I do wish for myself and my family to not be in poverty or suffering.

If the system is designed for these to be in conflict, that's not something I have the power to change, beyond voting for the less-shitty of 2 shitty choices on a ballot. At the end of the day I will prioritize myself and my family, and I think that's natural for 99% of people.
