qurashee··on An interactive version of Byrne's The Elements of Euclid (1847)
Are you referring to the kroneckerwallis one ?
qurashee··on Eating stinging nettles
In my childhood in Greece, stinging nettle pie (τσουκνιδόπιτα), a dish much like spinach pie, was a traditional recipe often prepared by grandmothers. Today, younger generations may not even recognize stinging nettle, though it once held a valued place in our culinary heritage.
qurashee··on Way past its prime: how did Amazon get so rubbish?
I recently had a similar experience with Amazon. I bought a pair of AirPods but didn’t like them, so I returned them the next day. Amazon confirmed they’d received the package, but when the estimated refund date passed, I got a message saying they needed more information.

When I contacted customer service, they told me I had to send them a copy of my ID to process the refund. I was really frustrated; I’ve had this account for over 20 years and never had any issues before. I spoke with several representatives, but they all gave me the same response, and a few were even rude and aggressive, something I’d never experienced with Amazon before.

Since I didn’t want to share my ID, I decided to go through my credit card provider (Visa) instead and filed a claim. Visa refunded my money, but shortly after, I got an email from Amazon asking why I’d raised a Section 75 claim (the UK’s credit card protection scheme) and informing me that my account would be closed for fraudulent activity.

I replied with proof that they had received my return and never issued a refund. That was the last I ever heard from them, and the last time I bought anything from Amazon.

qurashee··on Study mode
Indeed, that's what khanmigo is using, and they were involved in testing chatgpt before it was released for that purpose, to test/try/improve chatgpt as a tutor (that performs fact checking and doesn't hallucinate).
qurashee··on Magnetic Tape Storage Technology: usage, history, and future outlook
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Microsoft's research towards "replacing" tape storage in the future. Have a look at Project Silica.

qurashee··on Generate audiobooks from E-books with Kokoro-82M
Indeed I was thinking about private use only.
qurashee··on Generate audiobooks from E-books with Kokoro-82M
This looks incredible! I’ve had an idea simmering in the back of my mind for a while now: creating an audiobook from an ebook for my commute using the voice of a specific audiobook narrator I really enjoy. The concept struck me after coming across the Infinite Conversation project here on HN. Unfortunately, I just haven’t found the time to bring it to life yet. :(
qurashee··on The GTA III port for the Dreamcast has been released
From the creator of reicast. Skmp is such a legend in the DC community.
qurashee··on Show HN: I designed an espresso machine and coffee grinder
Send it to Lance Hedrick I'm sure he will make useful suggestions.
qurashee··on Reverse engineering the Ravensburger TipToi pen
Not a good sample but I've lived in three European countries with my kids and I've never come across them before.
qurashee··on Triple Density Floppy, Anyone?
LHA(lzh/lharc) was also a cool replacement at some point, especially since it was just one binary for both compressing and decompressing.
qurashee··on Zen, a Arc-like open-source browser based on the Firefox engine
"The only limit is your imagination" is a direct reference to zombo.com for me
qurashee··on Eugène-François Vidocq and the Birth of the Detective
Obligatory reference to the movie https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0164961/
qurashee··on Show HN: I made a website to find best bus seat to avoid the sun while traveling
Twenty-three years ago, during my daily trips to the university campus, I had the exact same idea. However, I became distracted by calculating the position of the sun and delved into astronomical algorithms, which led me to never complete it. Kudos to you, that's really impressive!
qurashee··on Show HN: I made TV Sort, a web-based game for ranking TV show episodes
This reminded me of adaptive comparative judgement. I'd be interested in your algorithm on how you decide how to pair up items.
qurashee··on 111-1111111 is a valid Windows 95 key (2021) [video]
Your post really brought back memories of softice and w32dasm. Incidentally one of the websites from that era (gamecopyworld) is still alive! Mind blown.
qurashee··on We asked ChatGPT to write a Sherlock Holmes mystery
What is more interesting to me is that ChatGPT chose Sherlock himself as the narrator, while out of the 60 stories, only 4 are narrated by Sherlock.
qurashee··on Ask HN: Are there things that Flash did that we still can’t do with today’s web?
Why don't they setup https://ruffle.rs/ on their website? I've managed to rescue a website using it and seems to work pretty much with all modern browsers.
qurashee··on Show HN: Colorvote.io – ranking all sRGB web colors by popularity
I'm more interested in the algorithm behind the pairing. I wonder if it's randomly pairing colours or using something similar to adaptive comparative judgement.
qurashee··on Eu.org, free domain names since 1996
United Kingdom is one.
qurashee··on Ask HN: Trying to get a copy of a hard-to-get book/pdf
Here you are https://we.tl/t-ZTuByGWJrr
qurashee··on It's often said that the Analytical Engine was before its time
First time I've seen ryg/farbrausch not talking about the demosecene :) Great post!
qurashee··on Carolina Gold was once the most popular rice grown in America (2019)
That's really interesting. In Greece Carolina (Καρολίνα) is the name of a type of rice, but I had never realised it's named after a brand as there's no Carolina brand in the Greek market.
qurashee··on MacKichan Software, maker of Scientific Word, has gone out of business
Upon reading this article I thought I should check the fate of one of my favourite astronomy software (SkyMap). Looks like it had the same fate last year, Chris Marriott (the sole developer) decided to retire. I don't really get though why shut up shop and not open source such one man projects :(
qurashee··on Biochemical Pathway Maps
It’s amazing how these things happen in the volume of a cubic micrometer. There is however a big misleading element; Not all of these pathways operate in the same cell and not all of them are equally strong - the arrows are not of equal “thickness” if you like. That’s the big problem in molecular biology and biochemistry: all these arrows are always depicted as of equal strength.
qurashee··on Changes to LastPass Free
Been using bitwarden using a self hosted db for quite some time now, brilliant product!
qurashee··on Another free CA as an alternative to Let's Encrypt
This reminded me the beginning of Spot/Exceed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qbAfyF6IIc and Contour/TBL, both classic demos now.
qurashee··on Amazon Aurora Backtrack
Amazon rediscovering PITR, nice :P
qurashee··on Stephen Hawking's Ph.D. Thesis Crashes Cambridge Site After It's Posted Online
More modern and up to date than you'd think :) Some departments here in Oxford have a server life-cycle of 3-5 years. It's just that nobody bothers for higher than expected volume of traffic unfortunately (a practice that can be extrapolated to many things in academia).
qurashee··on A Game of Life on Penrose Tilings
The Oxford Mathematical Institute has one just outside the entrance. We also have Penrose himself though :P
