quotedmycode··on Nootropic Brain Drugs Rise in Popularity for Today’s Corporate Climbers
Piracetam is one of the most popular ones, it's not hard to find, and it works for most people, or not. The most common side effect is muscle twitches or headaches. Headaches are caused by a reduction of the amount of choline, and eating eggs or taking a choline supplement makes the headache go away. Generally the twitches are not severe and don't affect voluntary movements. The side effects subside upon stopping. I'd say it's a completely different effect than caffeine, as it allows me to concentrate for extended periods and have instant recall. If it is a placebo effect, then whatever it is, it works. Placebo effect means there is an effect because there is expected to be one, so in any case it's useful. Piracetam's effects on the body are well documented, since it's been in use for about 35 years now. That said, I don't think this gives you any more rest, nor does taking it make it so you can't sleep. In fact, if I take too much I feel sleepy almost immediately and wake up feeling pretty good. In any case, these people taking nootropics are the new normal.

Web-based email was launched in Q1 1995 actually.

So it doesn't predate webmail at all.

quotedmycode··on Microsoft Announces Nano Server
That's based on real world data. Basically, they look at the reboots caused by 32-bit mode and DWM / GUI and video drivers, as well as security bulletins. Any bulletin that patched something that isn't included in Nano was removed, thus they had 92% fewer based on what's included in Nano.

I believe they might have done it this way so they can claim 'encrypts a 100gb file in under 100ms!' or something equally dumb.
quotedmycode··on Announcing the Surface 3
Once they get to that temperature, which can happen in a matter of minutes if you are doing something cpu intensive, they throttle the cpu, thus slowing everything down, which is counter productive if you are doing something cpu intensive. They can spread that heat over a larger area, thus heating up the whole device, or they can put in active cooling, or they can put in a cpu that doesn't get that hot. The Atom is a cpu that shouldn't get that hot. It's probably not as fast as the i5, but it can certainly run Chrome and other apps though probably games would suffer.

The issues we see with Surface Pro 3 overheating is where it's not expected to overheat, such as using Chrome. Using IE is fine, but when you use Chrome it overheats. Turns out a lot of the time it's related to ABP (adblock plus). Switching to uBlock seems to resolve most of the overheating of Chrome.

I bought a domain name from them years ago, but managed it with a different DNS server after I heard that GoDaddy was using Microsoft DNS servers.

Typewriters had shift-lock, which would have changed the numbers.

quotedmycode··on Soylent 1.4: a quick review
That matter of time may be a very long time. There are already foods which handle this application well enough. See Citadel spread, Plumpynut, K-Mix-2. The difference is that these provide more calories per weight than soylent and don't require added water (except the K-Mix-2). If they can come up with a high calorie Soylent and eliminate the need to add water (perhaps serve it as a paste) then it would be used in humanitarian convoys. As it is now, that's not likely to happen.
quotedmycode··on High quality GIF with FFmpeg
That is pretty amazing, thanks for sharing. I am interested in different quantization methods, if only for screenshot usage ( I am working on a remote control product, and the quantization used to be quite poor before I added in octree ). Of course, most of my code is in C# but I can at least take a look at the algorithms, and if they are MIT licensed, I can see what it would take to convert them.

So it's using a simple Median Cut quantization... which is okay, but you can get great results using an octree quantizer, and without dithering. Dithering kills your compression savings in GIF so you'd want to avoid it if possible. In any case, you can see the difference a better quantizer makes here:

quotedmycode··on Back to the Future of Watches
I think it's just a matter of choosing the biggest market and going after that. I think it helps that they already make apps for iphone. It's also a question of support. Do you make your app square or rounded? With android, you would have to support both, or perhaps one and have people complaining. With Apple, you support square and you know everyone has a square screen. In any case, I wish them the best of luck. I myself have a Moto 360 and it does everything I would want it to do, and it looks nice on my wrist.
