quilombodigital··on Flash media longevity testing – 6 years later
I was trying to roast this guy because I figured a burn-in test should accomplish the same thing he’s doing. But no... I had to ask the great oracle, GPT (General Purpose Truth), and it told me the guy is actually doing something worthwhile. How are trolls supposed to survive in this inhospitable era?

Apparently, multi-year storage tests are still valuable for validating whether those estimates match reality. Who knew...

quilombodigital··on Internet voting is insecure and should not be used in public elections
thats why I said I only miss the option to verify my vote history. I dont need to know how my vote got there, I just need to verify it at the place that sums all votes.
quilombodigital··on Internet voting is insecure and should not be used in public elections
yes, I dont see why it should not be open sourced publicly. maybe send someone with an eidetic memory to audit it. :)
quilombodigital··on Internet voting is insecure and should not be used in public elections
It is false your affirmation that they are not audited by public organizations.

Entities can register to see the source code in a controlled room. In 2024 for example the party União Brasil checked the code.

In 2025 during the official audit 149 entities registered to check the code and attack the machine. Universities, ONGs, political parties, etc.

Please check you facts before posting what you think

One thing I agree with you. It would require another big country effort to break it.

quilombodigital··on Internet voting is insecure and should not be used in public elections
In Brazil we have been using electronic voting for decades.

See, here we always had issues with corruption, and thats why we had to implement it.

The thing is that we always had major issues at the city level elections, because many small groups dominate different regions, and they just controlled the election officials, influenced voters, disappeared with ballot bags, and did all types of crazy stuff. It was pretty common at the eighties exchange votes for gas, dentures or even tubal ligation.

For all this reasons, a specific voting registry was created in 1985, and an electronic voting machine was used for the first time in municipal elections in 1995. This solved most issues, and elections started to be a lot easier, there was A LOT of confusion in the past. After it was available in all cities in the country, they started to do national elections.

The main idea here is that this is a government endeavour, not a private company. There are so many security layers that I think that only another external government actor would have resources to attack it.

These machines have special hardware, the encryption keys are loaded at the election day by the government, the machines are there only for the 8 hours of voting, then came back to a government deposit, they account for every machine, they are audited before and after, they randomly choose the election officials, the machine prints a receipt for the voter and the stats of votes of that machine. Each person has an election location and room/machine, so schools are used. If a machine has problems, they have to on the fly generate new keys for a substitution. In 2024 they used 570.000 machines at the election.

When the election day finishes, they place at the door of the room the machine receipts, so any ONG or international organization can verify. After it they take the machine to a central place where they connect to them and trasmit the data, and in one hour we know the president. During these decades we had presidents from the right and from the left, and all cities and states, so you can say it works just by seeing all this power cycling all the time.

I agree with the article in the sense that we need paper confirmation, and that we cannot trust the voter machine, but I think Brazil solved this by making sure to control the machine, and printing receipts and making then available to any public organization.

I particularly think that only one thing is missing in this technology, technically speaking, I would like to have a personal key with an ecc key created by me, that would allow me to insert this card when voting, so it would encrypt my vote, store and send to the server, so I could, using my card (even online) check for my voting history, connecting all the endpoints. It is still anonymous, but verifiable by me.

quilombodigital··on You Are in a Box
Yes, you would eventually be capable of sharing GPU power, devices, audio, anything. Imagine all your machine´s idle power available to others. Right now your GPU is barely being used.
quilombodigital··on You Are in a Box
This really reminds me of what Plan 9 was aiming for — breaking out of the 'box' by making everything a file, using per-process namespaces, and cleanly exposing system and network resources with proper permissions. It had that same idea: your environment shouldn't be a prison, it should be a flexible, composable space. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plan_9_from_Bell_Labs) (https://fqa.9front.org/fqa0.html)

Maybe now you should try to do an app to forget files. Mindfileness.
quilombodigital··on The spinning ATR plane crash in Brazil
Its early to make assumptions, but the weather report confirms the theory, and at the plane previous flight, from the inverse route, a passenger filmed ice at the wings.
quilombodigital··on Show HN: Vdm, a sane alternative to e.g. Git submodules
For this specific scenario, a simple custom format, one line per config, properties separated by commas and key from value by equals. In C# you can populate a dictionary with readallines/linq in one line of code. Need hierarchy/tree, use dots at the property name. Kiss
quilombodigital··on Show HN: Vdm, a sane alternative to e.g. Git submodules
To me, the biggest indicator that all the links being posted here about Git submodule systems come from people who don't know what they're doing is the fact that all of them (vdm, pasta, peru, git-aggregator, etc.) are using YAML as a config. Anyone who has worked at least a few years with Git and YAML knows that this type of file is not Git/diff friendly. I've seen too many disastrous merges, and the developers in the company have to keep using unityyamlmerge to resolve a foolish decision by Unity. Moreover, if anyone here has tried to parse YAML, they understand how unnecessary it is to use this format 99% of the time. In your case, the only advice I can give is to use a complete repo config per line, so it doesn't spread across different lines. This ensures the atomicity and integrity of your information.
quilombodigital··on BBS: The Documentary (2005)
Yep. Good old days… I also had a bbs with a friend in Brazil, we would make very expensive international calls twice a month to other bbs to download the news. Ah… and of course there was a group called applemaniacos that would send apple II disks every month by mail, with a very funny zine.

Hey nice! I always wanted a subliminar ads player! Now I can just order online things without knowing why!
quilombodigital··on Ask HN: Has anyone here turned around their life in their 40s?
I agree with most answers. Therapy is good.

Tried any sports? I am almost 50 and started learning kitesurf... it is frightning, but I know I need to expose myself to some level of controlled risk, I was always too cautious, never did sports, and I want to get old with some health, so I have chosen something that I always wanted but never had the courage to do.

About being too late for wife... kids... its never late... the problem is if you visualize this girl as someone young, without prior kids or life baggage. I am pretty sure there are women around, with failed relationships, that would like to connect. Part of the process of loving yourself is accepting your age and everything you lived as a good thing. every bad decision also made what you are, be happy that you learned from them.

People may get angry by this next opinion, but relax, its just an opinion, I can change my mind about it by just reading your answers, but I particularly think that going back to US will not help you, because even if you want to be in a different mindset than the last time, to enjoy better the life there, everybody else there dont have this mindset (with very rare exceptions), so you will not have company for your "carpe diem" moments.

This is a long shot, but you should read about AHDH and see if you correlate. There is a difference between beeing depressed and being irritated all the time and mad about the things. If this is the case, lots of therapy and medicine. Takes a long time, but the medicine is modern and very effective.

Focus in feeling better with yourself and the rest will come.

quilombodigital··on Ask HN: Should I sell my vintage computer collection?
As someone already stated in this thread. Its just stuff. I also had a collection with a friend when I was 25. I started programming with 12, so I had tk85, tk90x, appleII, MSX, amiga500, amiga1200, amiga2000, amiga4000, phillips CDI, videolaser, nintendos, playstation1, dreamcast, peripherals and etc...

I decided to have a change in my career, so I closed this office I had with my friend, and we had to decide what to do with it. We donated all to a local computer museum. Now I have this mantra, If I have some hobby stuff I have not used for three years, I donate it. Donated my Xbox360 and my playstation3 recently.

Sometimes I get caught by nostalgia, like last week when I was looking at a appleII clear case mod, and I get a small urge to buy another one. Then I just remember how good was that time, and that good memories are never the same when you live them again.

Now I use the money and time I would spend with a collection in many ephemeral hobbies. The current are electronic projects, laser cutting and Kitesurf.

quilombodigital··on Ask HN: Has anyone here worked on the Windows kernel?
I guess the real issue here is the "work-life balance is stellar". Humans just cant stand being in a comfortable position for a long time. People struggling in their jobs/life will say:"what are you talking about??? I would kill for this opportunity!", but the fact is that we know that growth only happens when there is change and when you are being challenged. This will affect not only your work, but also your relationships. Absolutely any job gets boring after some time, even if you are a Nascar racer. People get depressed when they have "everything". My formula to deal with this is to reinvent yorself many times, and look at your work/life from different angles each time. Understanding that you will be in the exact same position after some time makes you realize that eventually you will have to deal with it.
quilombodigital··on Java record pattern matching in JDK 19
good point... but I was not talking about OOP, I was talking about dynamic typing versus static typing. :)
quilombodigital··on Java record pattern matching in JDK 19
I dont think saving a few lines for a very rare corner case is a strong reason to add a language feature
quilombodigital··on Java record pattern matching in JDK 19
"If in your career you never needed to enumerate cases that required different data..." . Maybe one or two times... but it is not like "hey, it is impossible", or "shit, I have to write 10 more lines" in this rare code I will never put my eyes again. What I get angry is that people will start to use everywhere, in places they should not be using. because the guy did not wanted to stop five minutes to think about it. The river flows through the easiest path, but this does not means it is the smartest path.
quilombodigital··on Java record pattern matching in JDK 19
true
quilombodigital··on Java record pattern matching in JDK 19
can we have a not-messy-not-elegant language? :)
quilombodigital··on Java record pattern matching in JDK 19
I humbly accept the critic. :)
quilombodigital··on Java record pattern matching in JDK 19
The examples you gave are not language features, are frameworks/libraries... not the discussion. (the only exception I can see is the "logging API", but this is debatable)
quilombodigital··on Java record pattern matching in JDK 19
yep, agree with you. I become more aware of this when I worked some years in a huge ruby project. Everything was allowed, and with tons of DSLs you dont know anymore what is happening.
quilombodigital··on Java record pattern matching in JDK 19
I agree Scala is very powerful. I said messy because it is "too powerful", added too many features. I think this is their mistake. I respect the community, but can show my opinion as you can about java.
quilombodigital··on Java record pattern matching in JDK 19
My problem is with the "just adds"... Scala made this mistake, and ended with many different ways to do the same task. It is a powerful language, but I believe languages must have only one (or two) concise way to to things.
quilombodigital··on Java record pattern matching in JDK 19
This is true.... Old guys know nothing... for years we told the javascript guys the mess they were doing, and voila, all dynamic languages suddenly started to convert into statically-typed, and at the end, they have this webassembly, that runs in a schizophrenia-type VM wannabe. Congrats. You lost 10 years of your life because you didnt listen to us when we said that we have learned something from Self and Smalltalk.
quilombodigital··on Java record pattern matching in JDK 19
This is the point, you dont consider the instanceof approach, is just wrong. You already know your types in advance.
quilombodigital··on Java record pattern matching in JDK 19
I am an old school java developer. Can someone explain me why this is a "feature"? I can remember by counting my fingers the times I had to use "instanceof", and it was some classical reflection/injection/instantiation framework 'vodu'. If you are using instanceof in a normal java program, you are just making it wrong. It looks like some new javascript guys arrived in the block and are trying to make java look something messy like Scala. What real world problem is this trying to solve? Are you just fucking bored because you are all out of ideas and every JDK release we need "something"? Why these JEPs only have "boxes, rectangles,A,B,I" class examples and not a simple real world class scenario? Why we need to make java "friendly" to work with generic objects? it should be hell! I cant wait for JDK 50.
