quilombodigital··on Textsynth: Bellard's free GPT-NeoX-20B, GPT-J playground and paid API
I am not sure this went ok...

I chose "GPT-NeoX 20B" - "Question - Answer".

(wrote by me ) I am the oldest son of my mother.

(wrote by me ) Q: Who is my mother ?

(GPT completed) A: My mother is the oldest daughter of my father.

quilombodigital··on Spacedrive – A File Explorer from the Future
aff... I understand that this is a good idea, but posting a project in HN without a release, and saying it will have, but have not implemented the cool features at the frontpage, like cloud integration, photos, search, tags, extensions, cloud integration(gdrive, dropbox, etc), key manager, etc... This is the dictionary´s definition of vaporware. Maybe all you want is to attract more developers to the project, but if all big project wannabe start posting in HN... what the heck.
quilombodigital··on Show HN: Open-Source 3D Location-Based Wireless Mesh Network
Even if he is not talking about network, the example he used in github is flawed, of "auto connected devices, based on distance", maybe in US reality, where you have big houses, but ceratinly not in a real world scenario, with thousand of small apartments with everything near. The solution already exists and is not hard. try to register an airtag, or setup a new iphone with the old one and you will se the process is painless, and there is no 3d location involved.
quilombodigital··on Show HN: Open-Source 3D Location-Based Wireless Mesh Network
IMO, when a project starts based on flawed assumptions, it is sure to be short-lived. See, I have nothing against mesh networks or location-based services. I've personally done some things using decawave chips, and I think it's amazing. The point here is that "location doesn't matter" when we're talking about networking. Let's say we have a football team. you have three teammates near the goal, two of the defense guys are right next to the goal, closer to you. And there is the third, an excellent striker, who is a little further from the goal. Who do you kick the ball to? And let's say it's not a good day for your best player and he's tired because he's been partying for three days, would you rather shoot straight for the goal? The point is that all this QOS confusion exists for a good reason, because good routers and network devices have become bad for the most different reasons, and the network must ADAPT to that, and location is a STATIC value, so it doesn't matter. BGP was invented so we could not worry about location. The message gets there, no matter the condition. If you're not connecting to the closest device in the mesh, you already have a problem. This means that despite the power, your mesh router is probably overloaded by some other device, does not like its packets, has been partying for three days, or it's just bugged, so either way it will find the next possible glimpse of the network connection to deliver its message. That made the INTERNET resilient.
quilombodigital··on Ask HN: How do you manage direct updates to databases in a production system
Through the years I have many times worked on this problem. I´ve worked with rake tasks when using ruby, and many times in java, with flyway and my own system. Database Migration is not a complicated problem, you just commit to the repository a sequence of SQL/code scripts to execute and keep at the database the current step. The big misconception people have is that they can "rollback" when an issue arises. The true fact is that when there is an issue, it happened because something not planned happened, and this can be spurious data in production, production environment differences, script errors, or whatever, and trying to rollback automatically in an undetermined state is just crazy. That´s why migrations must be always FORWARD, no matter what. You try to mitigate all risks, the best you can, by running the migration in test databases (the perfect scenario is to perform a test in a production data clone, but this is not usually possible) and if anything wrong happens, deal with it, fix the database by hand, make code patches, and after it is solved, try to figure out why this slipped through your QA.

For me, the best one is this one (LOL): https://ichi.city/profile/www
quilombodigital··on Excess deaths and SARS-CoV2 vaccinations in Scotland
yep... Lets say someone says bananas help with covid, so when there is an increase in excess deaths, people start eating it, afraid of going bananas. You just cant later see the bananas graph and say "oh bananas!". :)
quilombodigital··on Photographer Charles Ebbets takes iconic photo “Lunch atop a skyscraper” (1932)
Hum. This is a nice shot, but I guess the affirmation is wrong. Lets think a little about geometry... I am not a new yorker, but by simply looking at google maps, at the lunch photo, they have the Central Park at their back, and the photographer has the Empire State behind him, so I guess he should be photographing the Hudson River or just posing for the photo.
quilombodigital··on Monkey MindPong
Yep, I agree this sounds hypocritical, but everybody has different "lines" to cross. I guess mine is how close they are to humans. (98%), and I also differentiate "food" from "experiment".
quilombodigital··on Monkey MindPong
I did not thought about this, but at the same time, "punishment" cannot coexist with "reparation"? Money would go to victims.
quilombodigital··on Monkey MindPong
"What better reward for a monkey, than a banana"? what about FREEDOM?

I am not a vegan/whatever/animal activist, but maybe we should allow terminally-ill or death-row volunteers for this kind of experiment... With good money for the family, and I think some people would like to help mankind in the end. It is better than dying without accomplishing anything in life.

So, you have at most one year with an inoperable tumor, and you will not travel because you want to be close to your family. Would you be a volunteer for this research, for 500 thousand dollars? (monkeys are cheaper, but you are the real deal)

quilombodigital··on Bebop: An Efficient, Schema-Based Binary Serialization Format
congrats! And finally Corba is being reinvented!
quilombodigital··on Functioning ‘mechanical gears’ seen in nature for the first time (2013)
I understand that the 'gears' synchronize the jump, but can this be considered 'mechanical gears', if it is not a completely independent system where the energy of one gear is being transmitted to the other? Can it be a gear if it does not make a complete 360 degrees rotation? what defines a gear? if there were 3 teeth, does it define a gear?
quilombodigital··on From First Principles: Why Scala?
When you go to an auto repair shop, the mechanic uses four different screwdrivers or just one super ultra incredible 8-in-1 screwdriver for everything?

Why not? is the mechanic stupid? the 8-in-1 screwdriver is marvelous, has the DOUBLE of features!

At the end of the day, he has only the tools he need for his job, and thats it.

quilombodigital··on Ask HN: Why do people just not bother about security?
I that must say thank you for your effort... About the kind of person you tried to attract, well, at least you gave them many colors to choose! I found the color choosing strange, why someone concerned about security should bother about color, but I see it was your attempt to attract more people. Maybe if you place a tamagotchi inside it people will be more interested. :) just kidding. I really respect your project!
quilombodigital··on Ask HN: Why do people just not bother about security?
heh. digital security "gamification" is an interesting concept...
quilombodigital··on Ask HN: Why do people just not bother about security?
Of course I lack imagination! That's why I asked HN! :)
quilombodigital··on Ask HN: Why do people just not bother about security?
hum... ok... making the devil's advocate part, I cannot guarantee I am "caring the appropriate amount". I certainly have a vision not shared by many, so it is hard to say I am "right", when there are so many brilliant people that dont share the same feeling about anonimity, for example. I accept I am expressing I am worried for others, based on how "I" see the relation between freedom, anonymity, privacy and secure communication.
quilombodigital··on Ask HN: Why do people just not bother about security?
Ok, in your opinion the digital security concept is hard to grasp for the common user. What is the excuse for the average company to not enforce a policy?
quilombodigital··on Ask HN: Why do people just not bother about security?
I understand your point of view that my priorities may not be the other people priorities. :) Sometimes we judge the others thinking they should act as we do... so I guess the answer is really.... they dont care. :)
quilombodigital··on Tempe Police Release Video of Uber Accident
I dont know exactly how autonomous cars works, but is it possible there was a warning (beep) before the system tries to stop the car, She got confused, hits the accelerator, disabling the system, and hits the pedestrian by accident? How autonomous cars decide when there is an obvious obstacle and the driver hits the accelerator?
