quietthrow··on Ask HN: Why are AI ethics/safety teams being disbanded
This is precisely why Meta now has the policy (ironically called narrative excellence ) to have no *moral* or legal obligation to publish the results of its internal user safety studies[1].

Updated the title slightly. Thanks.
quietthrow··on Ask HN: What Anti aging pill was Edward Thorp Taking?
Why don’t you just ask at inquiries@edwardothorp.com. Best case you get the answer , worst case you may get a lead to ask at the proper place. And yea if you find out do post back here :) he definitely does NOT look 91. Wth is he taking!? :)
quietthrow··on Sam Bankman-Fried Convicted
Curious: why does the legal system work for some and not for others. Eg: how come this guy is convicted but trump walk free especially after Jan 6th? Does the legal system also fall prey to money ? ie the better your representatives the Better they can argue for you. And the better ones cost a lot of Money so essentially the people with money have higher odds of succeeding in such a legal system?
quietthrow··on Ask HN: What is the smartest person you know working on?
That’s super interesting. I would like to learn more about this divergence as what I have said is something that felt common sensical to me. Can you recommend some resources?

Also if the what you are describing is true then we prolly need more divergence than what we currently have.

I am also curious (this is specifically about USA) how effective these limiting of ownership expressions might be if bribery was not legally permitted (lobbying). Like for example imagine the policies and the quality of life of parents if there was a “National Association of Parents” that advocated for the masses. Think powerful like NRA but for parents and children. Call me an immigrant but it baffles me that people of this country don’t have something like this.

quietthrow··on Ask HN: What is the smartest person you know working on?
Totally agree. I am all for capitalism but its reached a point where it’s completely unsustainable. We need Capitalism 2.0, which has profit but also other equally important goals of sustainability and community wellbeing.

quietthrow··on Ask HN: What % of your salary are bonuses?
This ask HN post surfaces a question I have often wondered but haven't found a logical answer to.

Why do people not share their salary information more openly when it is beneficial for them. Most people know that sharing would help them negotiate better and in some cases take away the extreme amount of leverage the employer has due to comp being secretive.

I will post this as a separate question to see what the hive mind thinks.

quietthrow··on Ask HN: What is the smartest person you know working on?
This. 10000+

On a personal note. My partner is doing the same. Sadly this job is not viewed as a real job in most parts of the USA (where I live). It’s a damn shame. If anything it’s looked down upon by large swaths of the society.

quietthrow··on Ask HN: How to deal with Interviewer/HR trying to extract information?
I would question why you are still talking to these people. Do you really want to work there? If you do (not judging you) then tell them You are under a NDA and hence can’t share the specific detail. My two cents would be to keep morality out of it. Sounds counterintuitive but it’s a better way to go about these situations.

quietthrow··on The Fight for Fair Wages
Somebody once said “Specializing is for insects” - I agree with that.

Also saying that fair wages is a problem of parenting makes you seem quite disconnected with the reality of what the masses face. I think what you say is correct but only to a certain degree. Circumstances matter a lot and most of the time one may not have control over that. People come out of that kind of hardship should not fall victim to unfettered capitalism where low cost is attained any cost. Minimum mage protects against that. Keeping the minimum wage low artificially keeps cost of everything artificially low - including your wages that you get for possessing specialized knowledge (white collar jobs). This results in the middle class having a low quality of life non materialistically speaking. This is what’s going on in America. Over the quality of life from a material goods perspective is better than third world countries but softer/finer things of life - family, relations etc people have very little time for and is objectively worse than most other developed countries as people spend their time doing multiple jobs or side hustles in the hopes to escape the rat race for good. Very few succeed.

quietthrow··on Ask HN: Should I focus on promotions or job-hopping?
Assuming you are in the United States - Do what accelerates time to leadership (Director+) roles. It’s a capitalistic system and this is par for the course. If you see it any other way you are not seeing the reality for what it is.
quietthrow··on California Right to Repair Signed into Law
Genuine question: (tad bit lazy too) so how will this law affect individual who have Apple products? - moving forward (after a certain date) I will be able buy and install a battery in phone /laptop. Upgrade the ram/hdd/ssd etc ? Or something different?

Bonus: same eli5 for yesterdays delete act

quietthrow··on Project Pele
I am always shocked by usage of “back then” and “good old days” and the like. What does it even mean Men were Men. Comparing the past that seemed harder than the hardships of the present day is so one sided and a simpletons way of looking at things. People suffered back then. People suffer today. Rich suffer and poor suffer. Suffering is suffering doesn’t matter the source and if it makes sense or not. You may fall sick eating an apple or eating fish and ce could argue all day long which suffering was more justified but it still dosnt change the nature of suffering a sufferer undergoes. The still feel the suffering despite the source.

Sorry for the digression but just had to make the point about men being men

quietthrow··on Ask HN: Why are some companies still trying to force return to office?
+1. It’s really as simple as what lostdog mentioned.

I will add that this will last a generation but no more. There are tons of companies make it work remotely note that these “old schoolers” once they are gone and replace buy gen z and gen z+1 will have a completely diff modus operandi. The only way this accelerates is the next google /apple / meta is a remote first company. This will unleash fully remote to the mainstream

quietthrow··on What was the age of the oldest person admitted to Y Combinator?
It’s not that yc cares about the age. It’s that the whole ecosystem that funds startups prefer younger and (till recently) single male founders.

One side of this is that startups are hard and demanding a lot of time and energy. Startups with other people’s money who are on a tight time frame to get a return on investment makes startups even more harder and even more demanding. Just by simple physics younger founders are better positioned to win on the demand vector. It’s about probabilities. Now an experienced founder who may have more obligations on their time and energy may still “win” on the demand vector but they have to skin the cat with some other ace up their sleeve that allows them to meet the time compressed demand needs of a startup.

So yea. It’s not about yc it’s about the whole system that thinks a certain way. Human psychology plays a big factor in this as these people in the funding side are no more “smarter” than the the average person and are hence susceptible to the same biases.

I say build something that people are willing to pay for and then bootstrap your way. If it’s a good product or service these same people will line up to you and you have the upper hand when taking their money which allows you to dictate your terms.

quietthrow··on Ask HN: Who's Retired?
Do you have children? Or Single or DINK? I feel it’s almost impossible to do FIRE while having a high bar on kids education and general quality of life (based on experiences and not material possessions). Would love to hear counterpoints to be educated on this more.
quietthrow··on The era of America’s subminimum wage for tipped restaurant workers may be ending
Pardon my lang, but it’s about #%!#ing time.

Profits over people have given us a lot as a society and I say that as a beneficiary of it as someone living in the states. I think it need to evolve to sustainable profit along with people, community and planet. We can’t and should not get rid of profit. But we need to preserve it by evolving.

Tipping wages keep things artificially low and sustain a system in which a certain class of people are perpetually exploited. I for one, as a resident of US can’t wait for it this to go away.

quietthrow··on Tell HN: Corporate Transparency Act Will Be Bad
Genuine Question: Why is registering ownership a bad thing? If one owns a legitimate business what’s wrong in declaring that? Of Course if one is trying to create an a power structure to further an agenda while being anonymous I can see this being a problem.
quietthrow··on Ask HN: note taking Tiddlywiki (https://tiddlywiki.com) professionally?
Two questions:

1) How do you use it on your mobile device? ( For Reads and Writes)

2) How is the performance on really large files -say 10k tiddlers?

quietthrow··on Ask HN: note taking Tiddlywiki (https://tiddlywiki.com) professionally?
That’s fine but if you are a note taking nerd ( I mean it positively) you should 100% try it out so you understand how powerful it would be if it just had a little more support saving changes.
quietthrow··on Ask HN: note taking Tiddlywiki (https://tiddlywiki.com) professionally?
Tiddly wiki’s super powerful killer feature is “Transclusion” + “Scripting”. Even eMacs org mode lacks this to be easily usable .

However the problem with tiddlywiki is saving to the wiki is not straightforward and requires all kinds of hacks depending on what you are looking for. In today connected world you want you notes on your connected devices and it’s not straightforward or user friendly. I wish somebody would just take the Js library that powers tiddly wiki and add / fix these issue.

100%. Total gem.
quietthrow··on Uber was supposed to help traffic. It didn’t. Robotaxis will be even worse
More like “Singapore!”
quietthrow··on Uber was supposed to help traffic. It didn’t. Robotaxis will be even worse
Bingo!

Singapore has solved this extremely effectively. Note that the solution is not just on demand pricing but also having good transportation infrastructure that actually is usable and is a viable alternative.

Bay Area has addressed it to some degree but I would not call it solved by any means. They have dynamic pricing which ensure you can pay to go faster during peak times. This is mostly a solution for rich people who can afford the $15-20 tolls one way on 101 but in a pinch the common person may be able to use by paying money. However the US just has no decent public transportation infrastructure that can be relied on a daily basis to live your life normally due to legalized bribery (lobbying) by the by the car companies during the earlier years.

quietthrow··on Ask HN: What do startups look for in a resume?
For a startup you need to convince them that you can help them 1) solve their problems in the role they are offering the job 2) you can wear multiple hats and do things that are on the periphery/adjacent of the role they are offering 3) you are willing to given them an almost unlimited amount of your time and energy towards their day to day needs. You can’t do this thru your resume. You have to do this via your interview and other interactions with them. The resume, then, is simply a tool that allows you to potentially interact with them. Degrees from prestigious universities, or prior jobs at impressive companies or roles etc all are proxy mechanisms of signaling to your potential employer they should have a “interaction “ with you.

I know this sounds extremely cynical, but most(not all) startups are somebody’s grand efforts to make a shit ton of money for themselves (and smaller but meaningful sums for some people who join on that effort). There is nothing wrong here inherently just calling a spade a spade and if You are failing to see this reality you may not understand how resume is just a tool that allows you get to a starting point of convincing someone that they should go be you some amt of money in return for your experience, skills etc. they are going to give thst money to someone and there are many takers. So they will try to maximize their ROI by giving it to the person who is most promising for “their endeavor “. As such while no two startups are alike you can abstract out the common needs across them and optimize your resume (and your interactions) to that end.

quietthrow··on Ask HN: My iPhone as My Computer?
Dosnt running your own server all the time and having it available over the internet then open a whole additional layer of management of security?
quietthrow··on Ask HN: We had mass layoff but companies are still complaining about shortage
Layoffs allow companies to reduce their cost. Labor shortages can stem from various sources - lack of skills need, not paying a fair wage etc. And layoffs and shortages can and often are orthogonal.

For example: In the US, the layoffs are largely in tech sector. These companies took advantage but perhaps too much (humans and greed etc) of low interest rates for more than a decade + the crescendo of the pandemic money injection which all made it easy to borrow capital and hire more people than needed. It’s like you don’t realized you have had too much alcohol till the next morning. The night of the party, In the moment you can justify “just one more” drink a few times. That’s your layoffs.

On the other hand, I keep hearing that there is a massive shortage of restaurant staff these days. None of these restaurants owners want to pay their employees a fair wage. They don’t realize that at the receiving end of their employer - employee relationship is also a human who is just like them. Who simply wants a better life for the most part. Tipping culture is out of hand - restaurant owners say that if they pay their staff a fair wage they have to raise their prices. So these morons think that keeping the prices low will attract more customers but the reality is that the customer still pays more for their food as they will need to tip. That’s your shortages.

One of the big problems here is real wages in America have been stagnant for 30+ years [1]. People are being asked to do more as cost of living keeps rising while making the same amount of money. Nobody wants to address it let alone talk about it. The biggest irony in America is there is lobby for almost any kind of business. But there is no lobby for the people of the country. So what ensues is a rat race. People trying their hardest “make it” as that’s what is in their control.

quietthrow··on Ask HN: What is your policy regarding smartphones for your children?
I keep talking to my older kid (pre teen) about the harmful effects of phones and screens. Kid seems to get it(for now) But the real test is yet to come - middle and high school where most kids have a phone. I am hoping that my kids will be ok being mavericks. I realize that hope is not a plan but the reality is that my environment is against me so there isnt a sure fire way to protect children unless you are ok with sheltering them to a point where it eventually becomes debilitating for them to operate in the real world.

To the OP: people typically have a herd mentality. HN is no different in that way. All you can do is try to instill trust between you and your kids and hope they will listen to you. You should also be super transparent with them about why you take the position you take. Give examples of people’s addiction to their screen/social media and how it’s distorts their view of reality to only make them feel bad about their existence. I am sure you can find a few in your own extended family or surroundings. Generally speaking , going against the grain takes a high degree of belief in something. Overcoming one’s minds transient desires requires strong intellect. That can be developed but it’s not an overnight thing and it’s certainly extremely hard when most People barely have any time to themselves or their kids - at least in USA (where real wages have been stagnant for 30+ years but cost of living has not[1]. The US deserves the birth rate decline it’s facing. It’s going to be a while before free markets and capitalism can evolve to solve this one)
