quest88··on Use a work journal
> Perhaps the greatest barrier to using it is akin to envy. We see others who apparently do this without written materials, in their head. I think we see this as evidence of intellectual superiority and harbor the doubt that using an aid like a journal means we are somehow lacking in skill or ability.

To add to your "this is wrong": These others may have themselves solved the problems we are now trying to solve, likely even using a journal. They no longer need a journal since they know how to navigate it, and it appears as superior to us.

quest88··on Ask HN: What brought back the joy of programming for you?
I made a tool that emailed me the top 10 posts from various subreddits every 24 hours. I solved my own problem and it was the most satisfying thing I built.
quest88··on The demise of the mildly dynamic website (2022)
I agree there's some truth in what you say. I do think these upgrades are part of a path towards correctness and reliability (bug fixes, security vulnerabilities, etc).
quest88··on Agricultural drones are transforming rice farming in the Mekong River delta
Is above your property in a controlled airspace?

You'd probably get a license to fly drones to test the drones. Wouldn't you expect a test driver to have a driver's license?

quest88··on Use Rails
It does. The parent was making an argument that rails is not great past 1 or 2 developers and more than X lines of code. I was pointing out this argument is not a strong one, since the this is not exclusive to rails, instead hoping to focus on what is exclusive to rails, so we can have a discussion about "Use Rails".
quest88··on Use Rails
I suspect you'd find the same thing if you were a python or php consultant diving into python or php projects.
quest88··on Figma’s Journey to TypeScript
I know you're trying to help, but this further highlights the problem with frontend dev.
quest88··on Personal computing paves the way for personal library science
I've had related ideas lurking at the back of my mind for a while now. Essentially, I want to save more things locally and and interact with it. For example, I have a bunch of book notes stored in Bear. I'd like to be able to ask questions about those notes, and also show the pages of the book itself.
quest88··on Supabase Storage now supports the S3 protocol
What's the actual complaint here , other then company A buys company B.
quest88··on Yes, social media is a cause of the epidemic of teenage mental illness
FU, buddy!
quest88··on Yes, social media is a cause of the epidemic of teenage mental illness
I don't think social media helps. It probably exacerbates the underlying issue? Otherwise we'd all be like this.
quest88··on Yes, social media is a cause of the epidemic of teenage mental illness
I think that's part of it but not all of it. Even here on HN, with no ads, you can find hostility in the comments.
quest88··on JPMorgan to sell customer transaction data to advertisers
Where does it say they will sell the data? I missed that in my reading. My interpretation is companies will say "show my product to users with this criteria" and it will. This is the same as fb and Google ads, right?
quest88··on LLaMA now goes faster on CPUs
What's the point of your comment if you're not going to do the work yourself? If you don't have something nice to say then don't say it.

The "hey this may or may not be true so someone go figure it out" is lazy, self-gratifying and pointless.

quest88··on Feedle: A search engine for blogs and podcasts
IMO pagination makes sense with feeds when a feed can be sorted in some ordering. I'd rather jump to page 6 instead of scrolling and scrolling and scrolling to get back.
quest88··on Intentionally Blank Page
Another penguin for my iceberg.
quest88··on GenAI and erroneous medical references
Not quite. For people outside of tech they can hear "AI" and think it must be right. And how great GPT is so it must be right. There are no other opinions.

Distilled down, classic search is many results; gpt is one result.

quest88··on Working from home can bring big health benefits, study finds
Calories are king, healthiness of food be damned. You're consuming too many calories is all.
quest88··on Meta's Reality Labs loses record $4.65B ahead of Apple's Vision Pro launch
Well, again, the US citizens can't agree to that. So then what?
quest88··on Meta's Reality Labs loses record $4.65B ahead of Apple's Vision Pro launch
I share your sentiments, but realistically how would one implement that? The US (where meta is based) government (ie, the people) can't agree what benefits everyone. The positive side is all of the jobs it paid for.
quest88··on Boeing Emergency Landing in Miami After 'Engine Malfunction'
The latest 2 out of 3 for 2023 did not have fires. They had mentions of the word "fire" for fire department and fire trucks, where a fire truck was dispatched for a plane hitting the tow truck on taxi after pushback. The one fire-related was an engine reporting a fire.
quest88··on Things engineers believe about Web development
Are you surprised that it took you longer with a tool you don't know compared to a tool you do know? IMO, that should be expected.
quest88··on I think I need to go lie down
I'd like to talk about today's sponsor, Squarespace.

(in Jest, I know it doesn't solve every problem!)

quest88··on BlackRock and housing: Setting the record straight
More people and less purchasing power.
quest88··on Auto industry executives admit electric vehicle plans are in jeopardy
Same. I'm waiting to trade in my fancy sports car for this basic ev.
quest88··on Auto industry executives admit electric vehicle plans are in jeopardy
Air temperature, circulation, direction, vents used, seat heat, radio presets, music source, navigating infotainment menus.
quest88··on EU data regulator bans personalised advertising on Facebook and Instagram
I agree with you that it would be favorable experience. But sites are going to offer you the ads that make them the most money if their goal is to make money. This may mean if it's between an RC car or viagra ads, you're gonna get the viagra ads (or insert non-context ad in place of viagra).

With kindness, I guess pay for the news then? In a more general sense, if one doesn't want to see so many ads then one should spend less time online, or try to visit sources that don't depend on ads. But for some reason people don't want to pay for the things they value.

quest88··on EU data regulator bans personalised advertising on Facebook and Instagram
I don't know how much better it would actually be! We'll have ads no matter what. And honestly, I prefer the relevant and targeted ads compared to what we had before.
quest88··on I accidentally saved my company half a million dollars
It would, I replied to someone else below to explain why. But in general, it's best for your future career to be remembered well.
quest88··on I accidentally saved my company half a million dollars
The thing about burning bridges is you don't know when you'll need them.

Let's say 5 or 10 years later you're applying to a job where one of these upper-level people now work. How do you want them to remember you? The know-it-all who wasn't a team player and kind of an asshole? Or the engineer who gets things done and has demonstrably shown to land impact and value, an engineer the exec would consider lucky to have?

Some of you will say you wouldn't want to work for one of these executives again. But people change, incentives change, the environment changes. Have you ever made a technical decision you later regretted?

And maybe you don't work for them. Maybe you're applying to a different company where someone knows these previous upper-level management folks and they ask about you. How do you want that recommendation to come across? "That engineer was an asshole.", "That engineer was amazing, I wish we could have kept them. We made a big mistake by not trying to keep them.".
