qubax··on YouTubers Will Enter Politics
> Already happened in the UK: Sargon of Akkad and CountDankula joined UKIP and are out there speaking out about their brand of alt right/lite YouTube politics.

It's so strange to see people parrot media talking points. But that's what the media is there to do I suppose.

> PrisonPaul of InfoWars also joined, but it seems he’s still mostly staying in his basement and making endless clips about PC or immigration than making the transition to “IRL” like the other two have.

You obviously have no bias.

> What kind of impact this will have remains to be seen. UKIP is still a fringe party for now.

Hopefully they will serve as the counterweight to the far-left extremism in media.

qubax··on YouTube CEO says EU regulation will be bad for creators
> Every YouTube creator that I follow has at least one video whose purpose is to rail against YouTube's mystifying demonetization policies, their trigger-happy DMCA policies that aggressively favor major copyright holders

To be fair, youtube was forced to do so because of corporate, news/media and political pressure. People forget that youtube also fought against the DMCA and corporate/media pressure before they lost.

https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/ezp4xa/youtube-is...

https://www.recode.net/2016/6/20/11974514/taylor-swift-youtu...

> Listening to the CEO of YouTube cry "but think of the content creators!" is about as transparently self-serving as a US politician crying "but think of the children!"

Of course it is self-serving. But it's also true. Youtube has been consistent in their support of fair use because as you pointed out, it's in their own self interest.

The problem for youtube is that content creators on youtube aren't organized or powerful like the media companies. And whatever you think, they have to follow the law and like most companies, they are going to err on the side of caution when they are forced to.

qubax··on Mars likely to have enough oxygen to support life: study
> I never understood why colonizing Mars is needed.

For the same reason in tech we have backup servers, HA clustering, disaster recovery sites, etc. A bit of redundancy helps in case something goes wrong.

> Earth would be more "hospitable" to life than any other planet in our solar system

Currently, sure. But other planets, especially mars, can be terraformed and made habitable one day ( it would take hundreds or thousands of years ).

> It's much easier to build and maintain a bio-dome in the Sahara desert, Arctic region, Cheyenne mountains or underwater than on Mars.

Sure but a terraformed mars can support more life eventually.

> Earth at it's worst is much better than anywhere else in our solar system.

The same goes for siberia, alaska, canada, etc. There are far more hospitable places to live on earth than those places. But people still explored, migrated and settled. It's human nature.

Edit: Not sure why I'm being downvoted but if anyone is interested in a talk of mars colonization, here is an interesting TED talk.

qubax··on YouTube CEO says EU regulation will be bad for creators
> That's orthogonal to what the Article 13 really says.

It's not orthogonal at all. What the CEO said lines up precisely with what Article 13 says.

> If anything, it will "force" the platforms to prioritize original content over remakes.

Your wording is very peculiar. "remakes" can be original content. Like the remake of "A Star is Born" is original content. Youtube's issue isn't about "remakes". It's about critism and fair use.

The only thing EU regulation is meant to due is to stifle discussion, criticism, artist creation, etc in favor of multinational corporations and of course the political elite.

It's not about "original content", but the ability of the media conglomerates to suppress smaller creators and take their money. It's about using law, money and regulation to bully and intimidate and silence.

Youtube already does this to a limited degree as media companies have subsidiaries that pretty much mark everything as a copyright violation and force independent creators to prove their innocence. When in a fair society, things should be reversed. Innocence should be assumed and the guilt has to be proven.

qubax··on Harvard’s Admissions Process, Once Secret, Is Unveiled in Federal Court
On the one hand, harvard and the left repeatedly say we should live in a colorblind society. Race is not important and it isn't even real. It is a social construct of no importance to who the person is. They tell us only raicsts are obsessed with race and only racists see color.

On the other hand, harvard and the left are obsessed with race. So is harvard and the left racist? Aren't they supposed to be colorblind and not focused on a person's immutable characteristic? By giving certain racial group an unfair advantage, aren't they condescendingnly assuming these racials groups are inferior. Doesn't that make them patronizing racists?

If we are all humans and equal, why does race matter? Who cares if the humans attending harvard are all white or all asian or all black? We are humans right?

From where I stand, harvard's admissions policy seems like blatant condescending and patronizing racism.

qubax··on [dead]
But everything he's said turned out to be true.

The propaganda smear campaign against assange wouldn't be so great if what he was saying wasn't accurate.

Governments want him silenced because he's telling the truth. Sure he may have his agenda, but everyone has an agenda. What's important is if the information is true.

qubax··on Apple CEO Tim Cook Calling for Bloomberg to Retract Its Chinese Spy Chip Story
Something like this only happens when there is a rift within the elite/intelligence community.

Both apple and bloomberg are heavily back by intelligence and elite community.

Bloomberg would never have published this story without the approval or permission of some section of the intelligence community. And apple/amazon/etc would never have come out against it as strongly without the approval or permission of some section of the intelligence community.

Seems like after Trump's election, there is a war between globalist pro-china elites and the nationalist anti-china elites.

This story, saudi journalist story, north korea, china, russia, europe, brexit, etc... There is a rift within the elites. We'll never know the behind the scenes full story but it should be interesting to see how things unfold. Are we on the cusp of a global paradigm shift or will the old guard win and maintain power?

qubax··on Cleveland.com’s ‘right to be forgotten’ removes names from some crime stories
So strange to see so many people celebrating 1984 style censorship.

What the hell is "right to be forgotten". That isn't a right.

Media gets to be less and less reliable and less truthful.

If people want to be "forgotten", let them change their name/identity.

qubax··on Climate change and the 75% problem
> It's incredible that someone could donate billions of dollars and do unequivocally great things, and people like you still think it's bad.

He did a lot of bad things as well. Microsoft the Monopoly set back computing by many years and was one of the most destructive forces for the past 30 years.

Gates must be spending a lot of money on PR to get his sainthood.

I'm sure zuckerburg and bezos are going to set up their own family charity to avoid taxes and "do good" too. Doesn't make them saints.

qubax··on How Manhattan Became a Rich Ghost Town
I hear LA ( downtown ) is turning into manhattan as well.

The earth is turning into a world of boring stale cookie cutter cities full of starbucks and mcdonalds.

qubax··on How Manhattan Became a Rich Ghost Town
It became a ghost town because of the elites and their supporters like theatlantic.

Manhattan now is just a place where people from the outer boroughs, nj, connecticut, etc come to work and then go home.

For a city that pretends to "never sleep", it is just a dead city at night.

Queens, brooklyn, etc is more lively and other cities around the world like prague, barcelona, seoul, tokyo, osaka, etc are far more vibrant.

Manhattan is just a hellhole now for the world's wealthy and annoying tourists who are too stupid to realize that sbarro's isn't real ny pizza and all the worthless trinkets they buy are trash. But at least there is a bank every other corner.

The sad part is manhattan is a blueprint other cities love to copy so in 10 or 20 years, most cities around the world will be boring tourist traps like manhattan.

qubax··on Women and the slowing global population
> I get the feeling this article is conflating birth rate with actual population growth.

It's not. Fertility rate for the US and the developed world is below replacement. And in the developing world, it has been dropping consistently.

> One reason why people have less children is that more of them survive.

That's a reason why women don't have 5 or 6 children, but that's not a reason why women has less than 2 on average.

qubax··on Climate change and the 75% problem
> How long will it take to recoup his $28 billion in donations?

He "donated" to his own charity which he and his wife controls.

But since you asked, about 5 years. His net worth was about $67 billion in 2013. Now it's about $95 billion.

qubax··on Climate change and the 75% problem
Actually it's not that simple.

Is it more environmentally friendly for 100 people to work in one office or for 100 people to work in 100 homes?

Is it better to heat or cool one office of 100 people or to heat or cool 100 homes?

qubax··on Salesforce CEO: tech billionaires 'hoard their money' and won't help homeless

qubax··on The Student Loan Debt Crisis Is About to Get Worse
We think that 18 year olds are too irresponsible to drink alcohol, but they are wise and responsible enough to take out $50K in student loans. If that isn't pure evil, I don't know what is.

Adam Smith said debt is slavery for a reason. Can't imagine a just society saddling so much young people with so much debt at such an early age.

But then again, public utilities are now peddling gambling ads and the US has never been a just nation like we pretended to be.

qubax··on Ask HN: Over 60 = no engineering jobs?
> I've been applying for everything from senior engineer to VP of engineering. Ever since I turned 60 last year, I'm getting no hits on my resume.

For senior engineer, the sweet spot is around 10 years of experience ( like early 30s ). Too young or too old or too little experience or too much experience, you're resume is going in the trash can ( or more likely just filtered by software ).

Your degrees and ICPC champion are not important for a senior engineer position. Nobody really looks at it. Domain knowledge and experience with tools ( current ) is more important.

For VP, I suspect you have better shot getting a position through your network rather than sending resumes. Ask people you worked with if they are looking for a VP and then try that route.

Think of it from a prospective employer, why would they want to hire you when you are going to be hitting retirement age? I don't think you'll get much success by just sending resumes.

> If you were hiring, can you tell me why you might not even do a phone interview? I need to know what (mis)perceptions I apparently need to overcome.

Everywhere I've worked, we've never hired any developer in the 60s. To be honest, we've never hired anyone over 30 through resumes. The people we hired through resumes are college grads or devs in their 20s. The people who were over 30 either started in the company in their 20s or got the job through word of mouth. Don't underestimate how much a good reference from a current employee matters to a hire manager.

Also, the tech/engineering sector is going through a "cultural" or "diversity" change. The execs/HR are encouraging managers to take in younger, female and minority workers and of course promote them. There is a push for a less white ( or asian male ) workforce and a more diverse and representative workforce. So if you are an older white or asian male, you are really facing headwinds.

I think your best bet is to ask your friends and co-workers.

qubax··on Ask HN: What's your favorite elegant/beautiful algorithm?
Quicksort ( especially implemented in a functional language like haskell ). It's a perfect mix of an elegant algorithm and a beautiful implementation. Simple, elegant, beautiful and powerful. What more can you want in an algorithm.
qubax··on Twitter has barred hundreds of accounts for posing as liberal activists
You aren't missing anything. It's just a far left propaganda outfit keeping with the message - "alt right", "right wing", "far right", "gamer", "incel", etc.

Ctrl-c, Ctrl-v.

Also, this story is like a week old. It's funny how it only reached HN via a nytimes post.

qubax··on Twitter has barred hundreds of accounts for posing as liberal activists
Actually, propaganda is agreed to be a good thing for a democracy. It's why we have free press and free speech laws.

Many of the founders ran printing presses or newspapers to push their own propaganda. The most prominent being alexander hamilton and the NY Post.

What is bad for democracy is censorship ( aka one sided propaganda ).

qubax··on Our Solar System Is Even Stranger Than We Thought
Stranger? We already knew our solar system was strange. At least compared to the other solar systems we observed ( admittedly a tiny fraction - a couple hundred out of 200 billion solar systems ).

We already knew gas giants ( a major cause of our peculiarity ) are rare. And we knew that most solar systems had uniform sized planets ( within a particular range ) orbiting very close to their suns.

The article doesn't offer anything new that would make us think the solar system is stranger. It just reaffirms everything we knew and why we thought it was strange to begin with.

qubax··on Life Got You Down? Time to Read The Master and Margarita
The problem with hacker news and social media in general is that "real" news is targeting it for clicks and views. Bloomberg, nytimes, washingtonpost and almost everyone else have social media teams dedicated to spreading their articles on social media. If anyone else was doing it, we'd call it spam.

Even worse, hackernews gives these organizations favorable treatment and privileges where they can get away with it. Can you imagine what would happen if foxnews spammed HN everyday?

The only saving grace for HN is that HN is so small that it is an afterthought for these spammers. The real problem is in reddit, facebook, twitter or larger social media. That's why those platforms are so toxic. It's overrun with news media employees and spammed content.

qubax··on China May Have $5.8T in Hidden Debt with ‘Titanic’ Risks
I know. China was asked to increase their debt during the financial crisis. John Paulson flew there directly to ask them to leverage.

I'm just pointing out the pathetic chicken little clickbaiting by bloomberg.

As I said, it isn't news. It's just nonsense they created to sell you ads.

qubax··on Ask HN: YouTube down?
Yep. It's down. "pbjreload=10". Seems like an old issue related to cookies. But who knows.
qubax··on Uber Proposals Value It at $120B in Possible 2019 IPO
>We've gone from a damaged company worth 48b in January to a 120b valuation in a few months.

I remember some here were ragging on Softbank for overpaying in their Uber investment just a few months ago. Amazing how a few months can change things.

> Presumably the Saudi and Japanese softbank investors are hoping to extract an ipo profit.

I don't think they bought in for a quick profit. These guys buy in for info and influence. But nearly a 200% appreciation ( if the valuation holds and if they IPO ) in a year has to be tempting.

qubax··on China May Have $5.8T in Hidden Debt with ‘Titanic’ Risks
May? Well do they have it or not? So sick of these clickbait nonsense.

If you want to know why bloomberg and financial "news" is a joke and a waste of time. Nobody in the industry takes them seriously. Only the masses who don't know better think this is news.
