quantumwoke··on Google AI Overviews cite YouTube more than any medical site for health queries
There are actually a lot of freely available medical articles on PubMed. Agree about the proliferation of lower quality journals and articles necessitating manual restrictions on citations.
quantumwoke··on Google AI Overviews cite YouTube more than any medical site for health queries
It's crazy to me that somewhere along the way we lost physical media as a reference point. Journals and YouTube can be good sources of information, but unless heavily confined to high quality information current AI is not able to judge citation quality to come up with good recommendations. The synthesis of real world medical experience is often collated in medical textbooks and yet AI doesn't cite them nearly as much as it should.
quantumwoke··on Mapping the US healthcare system’s financial flows
I think this summary is reductive, because it ignores the surprisingly dense layers of middle management in hospitals and clinics that are paid more than the medical professionals (and even that ignores external middle managers like PBMs etc).

quantumwoke··on My dad could still be alive, but he's not
As my medico wife explained it to me, you have about 1 minute after your heart stops before you start having permanent brain damage. Unless you live inside a hospital your risk of surviving a major heart attack at home is less than 20% at the best of times (and in fact seems to be about 10% or less in USA on average on some quick research).
quantumwoke··on A change of address led to our Wise accounts being shut down
Possibly. Would be better if the company name wasn't obscured from the post.
quantumwoke··on A change of address led to our Wise accounts being shut down
ISPs that host illegal content can indeed be outside the risk tolerance of a financial services company. The blog post is very careful to say "one of our companies" and censor the name of it on screenshots so I'll be interested to see what it is.
quantumwoke··on A change of address led to our Wise accounts being shut down
I don't agree with those policies but it's a possible reason for a financial services business to break a relationship if they discover incidentally that this guys business is breaking the law. Changes the blog post completely and the business info should have been included.

As a heuristic, using TransferWise is traditionally associated with Russian money laundering scams.

quantumwoke··on A change of address led to our Wise accounts being shut down
Nowhere in this blog does it mention what the business actually does, which is always a red flag. I've seen plenty of stripe bashing posts on HN that end up with the business being in newsletter scams or adult content.
quantumwoke··on No I don't want to turn on Windows Backup with One Drive
I will never trust OneDrive with any files after it silently deleted thousands of my files while syncing - I hit the hidden maximum number of files limit and then it permanently deleted the remaining files with no warning.

quantumwoke··on It's just a virus, the E.R. told him – days later, he was dead
I think it's more like Sam's condition did not clearly fit into a checklistable entity. Our heart rate and temperature go up when we have the flu, but we don't all go in to hospital for antibiotics or die at home. Probably they should have done more work-up the second time he came in but as the article points out that could also have been negative. He was probably just too young for checklists built for older people to pick up on his condition.
quantumwoke··on It's just a virus, the E.R. told him – days later, he was dead
I don't quite understand your third problem. I also don't think the shortage of ER nurses necessarily contributed, as clearly the doctors and the friend thought he was well enough to go home. Definitely agree with the first problem though. We put our kids through a lot of risk by sending them to interstate college...
quantumwoke··on It's just a virus, the E.R. told him – days later, he was dead
Heartbreaking story. They talk a lot about the possibility of bacterial infection but it was not consistent with the blood tests. It seems he just got unlucky (although should have had a Chest X-Ray).

Trying to reframe it in a coding analogy, there were a few abnormal logs maybe an exception or two but the coder was unable to figure it out and these exceptions happen all the time and so pushed to live anyway. Due to resource allocation issues they were pulled to a different job. Then the site crashed. Just awful.

Your second link suggests that this mitigation is not very helpful these days. I suppose in that light it doesn't really matter if LLVM changes it to a trap instruction or not.
quantumwoke··on GPT-5
This health segment is completely wild. Seeing Sam fully co-sign the replacement of medical advice with ChatGPT in such a direct manner would have been unheard of two years ago. Waiting for GPT-6 to include a segment on replacing management consultants.
quantumwoke··on Once a death sentence, cardiac amyloidosis is finally treatable
I should have mentioned my wife is a physician, apologies. The true prevalence of ATTR is not known since it's only been investigated for recently as described in the article. If you look up recent data you'll see a big difference.
quantumwoke··on Once a death sentence, cardiac amyloidosis is finally treatable
What's with the kneejerk takedown?

a) Yes, it's more common in older people. A lot of old people end up in hospital

b) 30% fewer deaths and hospital admissions is a good thing in my book

c) The more common form according to my wife

quantumwoke··on Coronary artery calcium testing can reveal plaque in arteries, but is underused
This is correct advice, thank you. I am reminded once again that correlation != causation and that doing tests 'just to be sure' is not a healthy or safe way to live. There is a lot of literature out this on what makes a good screening test.
quantumwoke··on Coronary artery calcium testing can reveal plaque in arteries, but is underused
It's better, but the contrast and much higher radiation dose compared to CAC carry their own risks. Individuals can evaluate their own risk but I wouldn't get this test under the age of 40 or 45 or so unless I had diabetes.
quantumwoke··on Coronary artery calcium testing can reveal plaque in arteries, but is underused
AIUI per my doctor wife, plaque cannot currently be reversed with a medication. It's about minimising future risk rather than reversing damage. Remodelling the plaque with medications does happen to a limited extent as commented elsewhere in this thread.
quantumwoke··on Coronary artery calcium testing can reveal plaque in arteries, but is underused
Better characterisation on CAC is key. This is a software problem - AI will help.
quantumwoke··on Coronary artery calcium testing can reveal plaque in arteries, but is underused
EKG changes are a late sign. You need structural imaging like CAC or CCTA or echo.
quantumwoke··on Mary had schizophrenia, then suddenly didn't
Immune antibody tests are already a standard part of a lot of mental health care, particularly psychosis. My wife tells me depending on the centre it may be mandated for all new diagnoses of psychosis. It is called an "organic screen".
quantumwoke··on Mary had schizophrenia, then suddenly didn't
Alzheimer's disease is not schizophrenia.
