My life is like Where's Waldo...except I try not to be the guy in Red & White. I'm just a convicted hacker (google me) building my reputation and sharing insight.

quackerhacker··on How in-app purchases have destroyed the game industry
If I pay anything for an app, I hate the fact that after I'm bored with it, I'll usually leave it on my device since I paid for it.

If you think in app purchases are bad, you haven't seen skylanders (activision) or infinity (Disney). These games require action figures to experience the game...wouldn't be so bad if each action figure wasn't over $10!

quackerhacker··on Mystery signal from a helicopter
Amazing!!! I would have just dismissed it as static interference, and not even think twice.

Hmmm, makes me think twice about the beeping sounds I hear when my phone is right next to my radio. I know it's data being transmitted/received, but I wonder if it can be deciphered in this manner.

quackerhacker··on I didn't have a contract with my friend and my business tore us apart
It's stories like these that always make me pursue my projects independently as far as I can. I've learned my lesson from blurring lines between personal and business...the personal feelings alone can destroy my drive and ambitions.

I know failure...tasted it about 3-4 times. I guess I'm cold hearted, I would've pursued success and burnt the bridge with my friend, if I did all the footwork in the beginning till the end. I'm starting to learn, nice people get stomped on in business.

quackerhacker··on A Catfish Stole My Identity
This may come off as jokative, but the people that are tricked could always ask for a picture of the person with a newspaper or a love note for proof that they are talking to the actual person, and not just some impersonator.

Personally, I can't get past the fact of falling for someone online. Just today I met one of my online professors and it was awkward, yet online we're both very chatty.

quackerhacker··on Ask HN: What's the worst you've ever screwed up at work?
I messed up epically on an interview. It was a 3 part interview for a JS/RoR coder.

1. I passed the resume and chat portion

2. I passed the telephone questionnaire and got along great with the interviewer

3. (Fail) I scheduled my interview on a Friday at 4:30pm and there is a 30 min travel time. I left 1hr early...still it was Memorial Day weekend, so I thought the streets would be quicker than the freeway since it was at a stand still. I was so stressed that I literally had an anxiety attack and couldn't even find the address. Never happened to me before, so I'll never forget it.

quackerhacker··on How I Lost My $50,000 Twitter Username
I feel so bad for Naoki that he was compromised in this scary manner. While the hacker did con his way on the phone for personal information, at the minimum, it's...hmmm....not nice...but "informative/narcissistic," of the hacker to describe his method to the victim.

Makes me happy that companies are moving towards text authentication since emails are easy (or at least well practiced) to compromise.

Note: Time to change my Time To Lives on my MX records and up my security.

quackerhacker··on Amazon’s Android console to launch this year priced below $300
So Amazon's model is to make money from the subscription service...hopefully that's a typo at $79/month.

I think Amazon can be successful in the gaming industry, given the fact of their customer base, model of free to play, but I think the gold in this plan is the internal game dev teams.

I'd be very curious to see if they will allow indie devs.

quackerhacker··on How much would $1.50 in 1945 be worth today?
I know this is just accounting inflation, but from a collectors stand point...if you had $1.50 from that era, it would be worth waaaaaay more than $37.70 :)
quackerhacker··on AMD reveals its first ARM processor: 8-core Opteron A1100
I totally agree...this time around Sony and Microsoft really were under inventory constraints to launch for the holiday season....

If Microsoft could have, I think they would've offered their subsidized consoles (like they did the 360), and launch with Halo as their premiere title....

(this will probably get a lot of hate) then again Playstation actually decided to play video games this time and xbox one is trying to be a super Roku.

quackerhacker··on AMD reveals its first ARM processor: 8-core Opteron A1100
I don't feel any console can really compare to a custom built gaming PC...for a while I was hosting my website and ffmpeg compression server on my gaming rig.

In regards to the latest consoles, I have a ps4...and while most "anticipated," games are still on preorder, I don't think it's fair yet to call the hardware a joke, I don't feel the studios have taken full advantage of the hardware.....now the games offerings right now....yeah I agree, but I think the studios really compiled their games (at least the ones I play :: COD: Ghosts, and Battlefield 4) for previous gen consoles.

I am interested to see how the new halo plays though...just can't get past the fact that the xbox one requires kinect to be...ummm, connected to play.

quackerhacker··on AMD reveals its first ARM processor: 8-core Opteron A1100
I gotta give AMD massive credit...while I have mainly used intel in my setups, AMD has really pushed their offerings.

First I remember everyone driving the price up of an AMD video card just because bitcoin mining.

Second they got the backing in PS4 and Xbox One hardware.

Now an Arm 8-core CPU...although I find the clock speed (2GHz) kinda underwhelming, still AMD's pricing would entice me to buy 2 for the price of 1 Intel i7

quackerhacker··on Keepod Unite: $7 PC to bridge the digital divide
Call me speculative of everything I see on the net, but I see many things in this high production ad that would hold me back from contributing (and I have donated money before).

1. Wouldn't it be more cost effective to run livecd's or even cloud host an os?

2. Refurbished computers are still needed for this campaign, seems expensive.

3. $7 does NOT equal a computer, it's a usb stick which end users will still need to utilize only the refurbished computers, because I can't name one "non-tech-savvy," person that knows how to change boot orders in the bios (let alone get to the bios at startup).

quackerhacker··on iPad onscreen keyboard designed for LaTeX [video]
That is amazingly clean! I've been using Textastic, but this looks worth a try!
quackerhacker··on Mac Pro (late 2013) replica inside a real trashcan
Seeing as I was using the exact same boards for my 6 rack cluster...It's a little concerning to see pic 12, in what looks like to be a disassembled PSU on the underside of the board. Other than that...I think this build is actually pretty cool.

Speaking from experience, these boards are awesome, and smallest ones I've ever used (other than a mac mini/or rPI)!

quackerhacker··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2013)
Just sent off my resume and cover letter to your email. I've been searching for a career with something that I could be personally passionate about. Everything about ClassDojo sounds awesome!
quackerhacker··on Ubuntu Edge
I'm so happy Canonical is pushing this innovation. As soon as I heard about their initial attempt in mobile OS on a Atrix, I knew this is where computing had to be going.

That phone's design looks so slick too!

quackerhacker··on White Coke
Makes me wonder what Brita is actually filtering out.
quackerhacker··on Minion drawn entirely using CSS
Good work!

I think it's a great demonstration of css and it's capabilities (as well as the devs skills).

This is one of my own downfalls, I'll spend hours (sometimes days) on css UI when there is always a faster and easier method to implement.

quackerhacker··on Why We Can No Longer Trust Microsoft
I'm a fan of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, so it's sad to see when a company's founder steps down. I feel like the ambition and drive sometimes disappear...then bottom line and dividends matter over pride.
quackerhacker··on Instant Bitcoin Purchases at Coinbase
Way to go Coinbase!

It's awesome to see some innovation coming to Bitcoin. This model (instant purchasing) is similar to Paypal's Instant payment, and even accounting for the risk/reward, I think it's an absolutely great method to help push Bitcoin adoption and position Coinbase for a goto for merchants and more importantly customers.

quackerhacker··on Verizon backs Ubuntu smartphone
I'm very happy about this. I've been hoping for Ubuntu's mobile OS to catch on, since it doubles as a desktop. Ubuntu's concept (an actual pocket PC), is where I see the next move in mobile computing actually going.
quackerhacker··on Show HN: Spread bitcoins by lending to friends
Think this is cool, please consider a Twitter sign up at the least, (not sure about others) I prefer not to reactivate my FB.
quackerhacker··on Mastercard and Visa Start Banning VPN Providers
I hope this pushes for stronger Bitcoin adoption!
quackerhacker··on Bay Area BART Salaries
http://www.sfusd.edu/en/assets/sfusd-staff/contract%20and%20...

http://www.ktvu.com/news/news/local/talks-between-bart-union...

Since she's an ex-googler, I would hope it wasn't broad speculation, those are her sources.

My stand on BART though is that they provide a very critical service to the Bay Area. So they have a lot leverage in their hands since the strike is being felt throughout the entire bay and all professional classes. I disagree that it should be happening if their pay is that high.

quackerhacker··on Bay Area BART Salaries
I got an awesome tweet this morning in regard to the BART strike that just wanted to share:

@cjc: Average BART employee salary is $83K/yr. A teacher with 10 years of experience in San Francisco makes $50K/yr. Who's striking again?

quackerhacker··on Why I’m not paying the Troll Toll
I would definitely (and will now) look into it. There is nothing more heart breaking and disappointing then coding for hours, setting up an infrastructure, becoming bootstrapped...then getting a cease and desist. Only thing to compare to that type of disappointment would be doing a quick patent search on a business method you might be implementing.
quackerhacker··on Bitcoin Foundation's Response to California Cease & Desist
There's a link right under the blue FB login [Sign up without Facebook] that should allow you to download the pdf, that's worth a try.
quackerhacker··on Bitcoin Foundation's Response to California Cease & Desist
As I've said before, it's disappointing this C&D came from California, especially when I view our state as one that embraces tech.

I speculate that the purpose of this publicized cease and desist letter was just to send a message about DFI's disapproval of Bitcoin and ward off adopters of the awesome crypto.

quackerhacker··on State Department bureau spent $630,000 on Facebook 'likes'
This reminds me of the IRS' $60k Star Trek themed YouTube campaign [0].

Does this frivolous spending of tax payer money get categorized under marketing expenses or operating losses? [sarcasm]

quackerhacker··on Why I’m not paying the Troll Toll
I'm against conceptual patents like these. I feel they are too abstract, monopolize a common functionality/method, and hurt competition. Way to go Todd Moore, even if they settled for $5, fight what you believe in!

A general abstract patent that I can think of in relation is one I researched recently that Comcast filed, patenting online video playlists[0].
