qprofyeh··on Is being bilingual good for your brain?
The way looking up words in your vocabulary works kind of like a vector db search. Then sometimes I think of something and the query result returns only the thing in language 3.
qprofyeh··on NesDev.org – A community of homebrew game devs for NES and other retro consoles
If you're into handheld console emulation then definitely check out https://gbadev.org as well. I remember their forums were epically filled with reverse engineering knowledge.
qprofyeh··on Physicality: The New Age of UI
Thanks Sebastiaan for exploring this, great demonstration and insights. Can’t wait to see what the actual redesign is going to look like.
qprofyeh··on Insane web design on Apple dot com
TTFB optimization to the extreme? Cheaper to transfer than downloading an entire font first.
qprofyeh··on If you are useful, it doesn't mean you are valued
Feeling valued is the key here. If you need external validation then by all means, work smarter towards it. Become a manager. Become a company influencer. Build a brand, and sell it hard.

At some point later in life, I hope you’ll figure out your own sense of value, true to your being, and decoupled from what others may grant. Your raison d'être.

qprofyeh··on JavaScript's New Superpower: Explicit Resource Management
Can someone explain why they didn’t go with (anonymous) class destructors? Or something other than a Symbol as special object key. Especially when there are two Symbols (different one for asynchronous) which makes it a leaky abstraction, no?
qprofyeh··on Thank You, Airbnb
The so-called Founder mode is basically necessary when a CEO shows signs they're unable to effectively manage their suite of chiefs and directors to steer the company stably into better times. The founder (often CEO themselves) feels immense board pressure and blames reorganizations (they chose for themselves) for this and goes all-in on another reorganization after firing executives and publicly sharing their epic shareholder letter, while quoting Steve Jobs and other greats.

Absolutely not saying MBA CEOs like Tim Cook are superior (in fact I personally believe the opposite), but for a founder to go into "Panic mode" is an act of childish, unstable behavior. When you stop and think about it from 5000 feet, maybe the founder is the one that should be replaced. It wouldn't be so bad in case of AirBnB.

qprofyeh··on Who killed the rave? Late-night dancing falls into global decline
Music volume these days is too loud for me.
qprofyeh··on Hitting OKRs vs. Doing Your Job
As an engineer I have nothing against OKRs. But it's often the day-to-day management (EM or PM) who tend to override the team's OKRs for upper management to prioritize something ad-hoc & out of scope they agreeably said Yes to.
qprofyeh··on The case against static typing in PHP (2023)
Is this still a discussion in 2023? I remember writing phpdoc @type hints in 2013, as that was the de facto way to have intelligent autocompletion in editors back then.
qprofyeh··on Uv, a fast Python package and project manager
I would pay if they could make our GitHub CI run 20-30% faster.
qprofyeh··on Car tires shed a quarter of all microplastics in the environment
I truly hope this encourages manufacturers to build smaller, lighter, and slower cars.
qprofyeh··on Norway's Wealth Tax Is Backfiring. Are Americans Paying Attention?
How many stayed?
qprofyeh··on Ask HN: Must-Read Books for Startups?
On my phone but: The Business Model Canvas, Getting Real.
qprofyeh··on Show HN: Shuttle – beautiful file sharing with your own S3 account
Congrats on launching! Beautiful landing page and the use of wasm is really clever.

Curious. What’s on the Roadmap? I use Dropbox for my paid file storage and sharing, which part does Shuttle do better?

qprofyeh··on Building a highly-available web service without a database
We used Redis with persistence to build our first prototype. It performed amazingly and development speed was awesome. We were a full year beyond break-even before adding MySQL to the stack for the few times we missed the ability to run SQL queries, for finance.
qprofyeh··on Ask HN: Freelancer's Dilemma – Client Won't Pay Despite Clear Agreement
IANAL but I would have a lawyer send a letter to their CEO.
qprofyeh··on Ask HN: AI hackday at work – what shall I work on?
Well, if the company is providing input data, it could be interesting to generate something with it. Like a customer profile pic based on their user data and past orders!
qprofyeh··on Ask HN: What was your most humbling learning moment?
I don’t have advice for you, as I am just as bad at kissing ass. Maybe try to elevate your perceived image/worth by liking what he likes outside of work: trying out a <sport> that he plays. Watching a <movie> that he likes. Wearing the same shoe <brand>. That stuff might be easier to do yet might buy some credit.
qprofyeh··on Ask HN: What was your most humbling learning moment?
Falling out of favor with ceo/cofounders/ex. Those moments were a punch to the face.
qprofyeh··on Meteor seen in Portugal
They finally sent someone to stop the invention of AGI.
qprofyeh··on GPT-4o
As for the Mandarin tones, the model might have mixed it up with the tones from a dialect like Cantonese. It’s interesting to discover how much difference a more specific prompt could make.
qprofyeh··on Fragmented thinking is a bigger threat to flow state than interruptions
I find that flow state is sometimes mind numbing. Taking a shower gives me more creative ideas.

But visualizing any system or only a partial system on paper, makes a huge difference. Added bonus, pen and paper cannot be interrupted.

Need to learn Mermaid one day.

qprofyeh··on Why Today's Software Sucks
This is a hot take. But an interesting one. I applaud the author for publishing.

Passionate product people (designers, PMs, but engineers as well) are hard to find, hard to train, hard to empower in this day and age, in the sea of tech workers they have to collaborate with, who joined purely for money.

Edit: To illustrate the difference, there are teammates who curiously ask “but what if the user does this… or that?” And then there are people who never even care.

qprofyeh··on 20 Years of Gmail
Sometimes it's hard for me to imagine how the current teenagers, and people in their 20s apparently, grew up with what I always considered Web 2.0 technology and smart phones — in my mind innovations of my time. They OTOH basically had internet/gps in their hands and pockets since birth. Social media equals internet and smart phones are the only phones they know.

Are they more fuelled to invent the next thing?

qprofyeh··on Best engineering interview question I've gotten
This could be why programming is seen as arts. Artists have to show a portfolio or a reel, that takes hundreds of hours to create. And then great style, a good story and crisp explanations on top of that.

The awful thing though is that you’re not allowed to show your old employers’ code. And most of it is teamwork.

qprofyeh··on On clock faces, 4 is Expressed as IIII, not IV
Brilliant if true!
qprofyeh··on If architects had to work like programmers (1995)
There isn’t a more accurate description of “corporate agile” than exactly this. It’s a joke, and the joke’s on us.
qprofyeh··on Sam Altman owns OpenAI's venture capital fund
Hm… You got me thinking, twice. It works both ways.
qprofyeh··on Ask HN: Nitter officially declared "over" today – alternatives?
I wonder if archive.ph could work for at least the original tweet(s)
