How much does HN cost to run I wonder.
qorrect··on OpenAI was down
Seriously though why do they call it Open ?
qorrect··on In a Zoom Job Interview, the Recruiter Asked Me to ‘Show Her Around the Room
It's probably because of the massive amount of fraud going on , with people pretending to be someone else to get the job. Reddit seems particularly bad about seeing things from anyone else's perspective.
qorrect··on Wildfires are destroying California's forest carbon credit reserves, study says
> Like spraying them down in PFAS, insecticide, and wrapping them in plastic?

Then sink them in the ocean.

qorrect··on Wildfires are destroying California's forest carbon credit reserves, study says
Well not really the loaders and trucks yet. I don't think there are any commercial semis, but https://www.forbes.com/sites/alanohnsman/2022/05/13/big-rigs... seems to suggest that they are coming.

> We could also allow for community net metering so poor high density areas could establish nonprofit solar/wind farms that lower their electricity bills.

Is this something that one could do now ? I don't know where you'd begin on something like that but I'm loving this idea.

qorrect··on Post-quantum encryption contender is taken out by single-core PC and 1 hour
Oh its just a dig at Louisiana where my family is from. It's fun to call them stupid ( they're not ).

I think you found the offender.

qorrect··on Coding as a greybeard

Can you talk more about what you learned ?

qorrect··on ImHex – A Hex Editor
This looks way better than hex-mode.
qorrect··on ImHex – A Hex Editor
What tool do you use now ?
qorrect··on E*Trade Dividend Bug
Sounds to me like the data was wrong , which tests would not catch.
qorrect··on Show HN: Doxx Me – See how doxxable your phone number is
Edit: I said it wrong in the initial post the FBI visited for a different reason.

They thought I had 'hacked in'. My landlady at the time worked as a secretary at the FBI and misunderstood or did not know the data could be purchased legally through a third party, after I told her what I was doing at a dinner at their house which they invited me to.

I was extremely hung over when they came, I was 25, and did not at all believe they were agents I slammed the door on them (one of them had converse sneakers with their suits though). They slowly convinced me they were in fact legit, I showed them all the paperwork, and shut the site down due to caution. Gave me a good story to tell, ~2005.

qorrect··on Show HN: Doxx Me – See how doxxable your phone number is
Having run a few background check websites where there was a data broker ... no they hate the attention. I got a visit from the FBI for using the name of their database ( we could show the results from the DB, but we could not use the name of it publicly) , which they updated on their website to say 'restricted' but did not email us or call us. This was early 2000's.

I took a chance, and it knows my relatives, all my old addresses, my SSN and drivers license number.

It looks legit to me, and a good business idea.

qorrect··on Any opportunities for hyperskilled labor, preferably online and pseudonymously?
Sounded like they are about to become homeless. I'm less concerned with teenage gambling than I am with teenage starvation/death.
qorrect··on Two weeks in, the Webb Space Telescope is reshaping astronomy
True, and DARPA does some pretty cool stuff. Civilian 'ARPA how awesome would that be.

You could learn card counting, just keep in mind you have to find the casinos that don't throw out this advantage ( by only using 6 out of the 7 packs in a shoe for instance ).

qorrect··on Oldest and Fatherless: The Terrible Secret of Tom Bombadil (2011)
Well I'm glad you said that, I was very disappointed he wasn't in the movies. My other friends seemed not to care, or they thought he would be too difficult to portray on camera.
qorrect··on Ask HN: What technologies have made your life worse?
Car touchscreens are actively making the world a more dangerous place to live in. And everyone seems ok with it.
qorrect··on Ask HN: What technologies have made your life worse?
> some say it has no syntax

That was always my impression, you're writing the AST directly, then manipulating it with fancy macros.

qorrect··on Ask HN: I'm in a rut. How did you get out of yours?
Yes, how did you find it ?
qorrect··on Two weeks in, the Webb Space Telescope is reshaping astronomy
> + however much the CIA makes from selling crack.

That gave me a good chuckle.

Also, just because the military did them first, does not mean we wouldn't have created them. We might even have more inventions if we had a dedicated R&D team for America.

qorrect··on Google Launches Carbon, an Experimental Replacement for C++
> I thought Linux was C only

It won't be for long (Rust) https://thenewstack.io/rust-in-the-linux-kernel-by-2023-linu... .

But I don't expect C++ to be added.

qorrect··on Ask HN: Leaving Germany – where to find quality of life as experienced engineer?
I loved the Canary Islands ( I was only there for 2 days though ). Seems like it's big enough to have both big cities and small towns. And the food was amazing.
qorrect··on Ask HN: Leaving Germany – where to find quality of life as experienced engineer?
> but in practice it's very isolating

Well, maybe. There are some island towns with lots of community , even expat communities. I actually found it easier to make friends on these islands then in a big city.

But the supply chain issues are big, if you want electronics ( in my case for Panama ), you get on a plane and go to the US to buy them. Same with any major medical care.

How do I get started doing being an independent ? Recently I have tried using Upwork, but am constantly being underbid in a race to the bottom.
