qkls··on Helsinki records zero traffic deaths for full year
People know their roads and usually there's very little traffic. We are also used to driving in gravel and snow, so you need to learn to adjust your speed accordingly.
qkls··on In 2024, please switch to Firefox
That's why I still develop using pluginless Chrome, even though I've always used Firefox as my default browser.
qkls··on The age of average
Isn't it great that you can converge on the things you don't care and specialize on the things you're interested in, like speccing and customizing your toothbrush.
qkls··on Quitting the rat race
Living in a rural area and visiting cities beats living in a city and viting the mountains for me. Visiting cities is super simple, and time of the year or weather basically doesn't matter. But for the mountains you need to be there to be ready for the best weather and conditions.
qkls··on Ask HN: Anyone tired of everything being a subscription now?
With Bitwarden you can sync on the free plan.
qkls··on Nightdrive
It's "Outrun" aesthetic, for example https://www.reddit.com/r/outrun
qkls··on Ask HN: Burnt-out, directionless but want to turn it around
I'm imagining a scenario where a candidate explicitly says that they just had a career break that was due to drug abuse, I think it would be hard to stay objective after that. I don't hire people but that would affect a lot of employers.
qkls··on Ask HN: Burnt-out, directionless but want to turn it around
Well... I don't hire people so don't take my comment as proof that any illegal biases are rampant. I was just stating one possible issue an employer might have with career breaks.
qkls··on Ask HN: Burnt-out, directionless but want to turn it around
How would I even know they are clean? And if they are clean and they presumably have a greater chance of a relapse than other random candidates.
qkls··on Ask HN: Burnt-out, directionless but want to turn it around
Substance abuse related career breaks. At least recent.
qkls··on Mercedes to accept legal responsibility for a vehicle when Drive Pilot is active
It's 60 km/h everywhere else than the US, where it's 64.36 km/h for weird reasons.
qkls··on Finland starts much-delayed nuclear plant, brings respite to power market
The solution for agriculture is to stop eating meat.
qkls··on Finland starts much-delayed nuclear plant, brings respite to power market
There's sunlight around the clock furing summer. Many summer cottages are off-grid and get all elecricity using solar.
qkls··on Google Search Is Dying
Maybe you're a part of an a/b test? Reddit has always worked fine in the browser for me.
qkls··on Anti-mimetic tactics for living a counter-cultural life
This is exactly the kind of post that ranks on HN. It seems intelligent but is not very challenging.
qkls··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2021 – Show and tell
The default autoplay option is too eager, I had ace of spades but 2 of spades was hidden. I couldn't move 3 of spades anywhere to reveal the card under it as the other stacks were autoplayed up to 5 already.
qkls··on The mermaid is taking over Google search in Norway
Sori jos kuulosti hyökkäävältä, kiinnosti vain kuulla lisää miten suomen oppimisen vaikeus koetaan :)

I'd say that it's fluent level then. I've met people that have lived in Finland for 20 years but can't still form sentences in Finnish.

The "Finnish is hard" trope is probably a mental block, Finnish probably seems hard on surface but it's very logical if you dive deep into it.

qkls··on The mermaid is taking over Google search in Norway
What languages did you speak before learning Finnish and what level are you currently at?
qkls··on Honda quits F1, invests in carbon-free tech instead
They don't swap cars anymore. But the races are shorter than F1 races.
qkls··on Ask HN: Why did you leave the tech industry?
Try many different things. Or think what excited you when you were young.
qkls··on The cognitive costs of air pollution
Mold is an issue in Finland, mostly for insulated houses with poor ventilation. Many schools and public buildings have mold and other air issues due to saving on heating.
qkls··on The growing need for human robot-minders could juice the remote workforce
Less jobs will be available as fewer workers are required if one human can do multiple tasks remotely.
qkls··on Eat less meat: UN climate change report calls for change to human diet
Good vegetarian food can be easy but some ingredients like tofu require seasoning. Almost all meat dishes can be made with only salt and pepper.
qkls··on Europe is edging towards making post-car cities a reality
In Helsinki there are multiple good fishing spots that are accessible with public transport. You can also visit two national parks using regional bus.
qkls··on Show HN: Spark CMS – “The easiest CMS I've ever used” (alpha)
What does Spark's AI do?
qkls··on Show HN: Sitebot.ai – Automatic website testing based on users' clicks
Hi, I'm the maker of sitebot.ai.

I felt that website testing was necessary for my web dev work, but I wasn't satisfied with tools that require you to create and maintain tests yourself. I created sitebot.ai to automatize website testing. The service converts website users' clicks to patterns and tests that the site keeps working.

qkls··on Denmark to ban petrol and diesel car sales by 2030
Does that cover the cost of the roads? Finnish fuel tax is 68 euro cents per litre (2,57€/2,95$ per gallon) and 2/3 of that covers the road maintenance. That is 328 times the amount of your fuel tax.
qkls··on Denmark to ban petrol and diesel car sales by 2030
Because Finland is sparsely populated (and long) for an EU country, road trips are a thing here, especially for a winter holiday to Lapland. We even have a company advertise car ferries to Germany, so some must fantasize about a road trip!

Even then, there are no American size cars. Most sold cars are European or Japanese station wagons.

qkls··on Questions
Finnish travel agencies offer a week long trip to Canary islands for €500, you don't need to be rich to save for that once a year. Most cities have spas too.
qkls··on Show HN: Dancemusic.wtf – Quiz Game for Learning Electronic Dance Music Styles
I almost exclusively listen to electronic music, but at least one of the choices was always a genre I haven't heard of. For example, I couldn't guess that Huoratron was "Fidget House / Complextro" though I have listened to him for years.

The game was fun though, only a tad slow to progress.
