qkhhly··on Windsurf employee #2: I was given a payout of only 1% what my shares where worth
i had many startups reaching out over the years but i just could not make the numbers work to make the shift.

it's not uncommon that a regular salary from a big tech in the bay area would amount to ~$2M total after 4 years (considering stock appreciation).

if you were given 1% of equity of the startup then start up has to worth $200M after 4 years. or more likely you would be given 0.1% of equity of the startup, and then it has to worth more than $2B, in order for it to make sense for you.

how likely is that going to happen?

qkhhly··on Huawei releases an open weight model trained on Huawei Ascend GPUs
> Does this mean that Huawei phone which has been hurt badly by sanction will now stand a fighting chance because of homegrown GPU?

oh, man, "stand a fighting chance"? huawei phone sales has already been back and surpassed apple in china.

qkhhly··on Why does the U.S. always run a trade deficit?
There is no trade deficit if you consider the dollar is the goods that US exports to other countries.
qkhhly··on Show HN: I built an app to use a QR code as my doorbell
if a locksmith can open your door, others can, too. in this rare event, i think brute force is an acceptable price to pay for the extra security.
qkhhly··on Show HN: I built an app to use a QR code as my doorbell
what is the failsafe mode if you lost all your keys, or forget your password, or fingerprint reader runs out of battery? same thing applies here.
qkhhly··on Show HN: I built an app to use a QR code as my doorbell
I have a better idea: using a QR code as your door key.

* Install a lock that does not have any external mechanism to unlock it. No key holes, no password pad, nothing. So there will be no lock picking in any way.

* Use your peep hole as a camera.

* Show a QR code to said camera.

* Door unlocks if QR code is correct.

qkhhly··on AAA Gaming on Asahi Linux
can i play black myth wukong with it?
qkhhly··on 1D Pac-Man
this is surprisingly engaging!
qkhhly··on DaedalOS – Desktop environment in the browser
apart of the fun of having those on the web, is anybody actually using them for something serious?
qkhhly··on Czech news crew in SF covering APEC robbed at gunpoint while filming
Welcome to SF!
qkhhly··on WordPress introduces 100 year domain registrations
without any language specifying what would be their way to re-pay the customer in case of anything happens to prevent them from fulfilling the 100year contract, i would not pay a dime for this.
qkhhly··on High-documentation, low-meeting work culture
are your engineers evaluated on the quality and up-to-date-ness of the docs they produced? and are they paid more and promoted faster if they do produce quality docs?

if not, i don't believe you.

qkhhly··on Duplicati: Free backup software to store encrypted backups online
the thing that made me wanting to post is this bullshit:

Download Duplicati 2.0 (beta) or Look at 1.3.4 (not supported)

i work at a big tech and see this all the time, if your "new shinny promotion ready" version is not ready, why the hell would you drop support for the old version that works? i'd stay away from any of this products operating by this irresponsible teams.

yeah, i know, lots of biased guesses/views and sentiments on my part but you get how much this angers me.

qkhhly··on Show HN: Rocketry – Statement-based scheduling framework for Python
if it provides monitoring ui (e.g. success/failure status for last N runs), then i'd seriously give it a try.
qkhhly··on After Obsidian and Logseq, I give Dendron a try
just stop finding itching spots in every app and start writing (notes)!
qkhhly··on Lessons learned from running Apache Airflow at scale
airflow is one piece of software that i hate very much, especially the aspect that my job definition is intertwined with the actual job code. if my job depends on something that conflicts with airflow's dependency, it gets ugly.

i actually like azkaban a lot better. of course, writing a plain text job config could also be painful. i think ideally you could write job def in python or other lang but it gets translates to plain text config and does not interfere with your job code in any way.

qkhhly··on Show HN: Lists.sh – A Microblog for Lists
apparently your username cannot start with the letter 'q'. lol...
qkhhly··on China asked Russia to delay war until after Olympics, Biden officials say
skepticism and problems of trust in the western world will come no matter what -- just because we are different and refuse to do what western world ask of us without considering our own interest. and frankly, we don't care about western skepticism or trust.
qkhhly··on Singapore prime minister Lee Hsien Loong’s Sudoku solver (2018)
replace "Singapore" with "China", then instead of flagging your comment, the HN crowd would shit themselves over your comment.
qkhhly··on The Belgian government has removed ‘backdoor requirement’ from new law
hmm... reading western news for a while you would think china is the only one that has back doors.
qkhhly··on Rewriting LaTeX in Pure Rust
\insteadof re-write \latex, it \might be \more \interesting to \change this \backslash \filled \syntax.
qkhhly··on TikTok and WeChat: Curating and controlling global information flows
I have been in the US for ten years. I came from China after undergrad and I got a PhD from a top US University. I still do not agree with banning WeChat/Tiktok on the basis of "national security" or "privacy". In your mind, I am still "programmed". To me, this is simple and plain arrogance.
qkhhly··on Info about the Google Play Music sunset
Two years from now: "Info about the YouTube Music sunset"...
qkhhly··on A guide to learning algorithms through LeetCode
Let me ask you this: Do you think you are doing OK, or even great, comparing to your peers at your company? If yes, then I would say the hiring process is more smart than idiotic.
qkhhly··on US to ban transactions with ByteDance and WeChat in 45 days
proportional? China gave a clear path forward to those companies if they want to operate in China (setting up severs in China, complying local laws, etc..) They chose not to do so and left. Did US gave any clear path how these tech companies can continue operate in the US other than selling themselves and giving the goverment a commission?
qkhhly··on Google Duo rolls out realtime AV1
Two years from now: Google is shutting down Duo...
qkhhly··on How is China able to provide enough food to feed over 1B people?
I grew up in China and had all my education in China up until my undergrad. I got my PhD in a top US school. I consider myself highly educated even in US standards. When I was in China, I was very concerned about my country and my government. I was worried and feeling hopeless of my country. Man, was I young and naive. I have since lived in the US for almost ten years. Five years for my PhD and almost five years for a high tech job. Throughout the years, I have learnt what's called bias, political games, double standards and western media hypocrisy. I can browse a free internet as opposed to a "censored" internet in the China. However, instead of hating my government more, I start to appreciate my government deeply. I have seen changes of my country in the past thirty years. Without the leadership of my government and the CCP, none of these would be possible. These comments are from a highly educated person who has deep and extensive experience of both countries, can and is capable of thinking independently. And these are not only my opinion, these are consensus of all my educated generation working in the US. If this is something bewildering to you who only consume information from western media, I don't blame you. I encourage you to visit and see for yourself.
qkhhly··on Giant squid caught on video for the second time
You people may be thinking about thinking about intelligence. I am mostly thinking about: Wow, 10 feet long grilled squid. LOL!
qkhhly··on Google is acquiring Kaggle
Google probably want to use Kaggle as Google cloud entry point for the data scientist community. Kaggle has a lot of student and entry level data scientist. Getting those users to start to use Google cloud could potentially drive the growth of lots of potential customers.
