qingcharles··on Canto: A speech model built for the real world
Is Handy still the best option for local?

Wispr lagged my PC to hell; plus, the cost. The quality was excellent, though.

qingcharles··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
I know someone in the biz, so two other ways people are making money:

1) Buying land and getting it rezoned for storage and then selling it on -- it's getting harder to get permits to build storage as people get sick of them, so there is a whole economy in knowing how and where to build them and only dealing with the paperwork.

2) Storage unit construction is a huge business now.

Sell the shovels in the gold rush etc.

qingcharles··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
There was a study done in Los Angeles and found that 80% of garages are used for storage with the car parked outside.
qingcharles··on Astra for Law
They are excellent, especially the latest models. That said, (a) I wouldn't feel safe filing something without a real lawyer looking at it; (b) it can't (easily? legally?) do oral arguments for you; and (c) a lot can happen in the hallways outside the courtroom to move a case forward that the AI can't easily do.
qingcharles··on Astra for Law
There is none, not for statutes and definitely not for case law; even at the appellate level where you have multiple federal circuits, then 50 states, then territories, military, tribal and a whole host of other niche courts. And the appellate court systems can be split into districts, and by lower and higher levels.

Then if you want to really get into it, The People should also be able to access trial court level, and at that point you have over 3000 distinct court systems with their own access systems, usually requiring logins and CAPTCHAs, and half of them not even having anything accessible online at all, and the other half only having recent stuff online and the rest rotting in a flooded basement.

qingcharles··on Performance Improvements in .NET 11
It still exists, it's still a bit quirky because of the way you need to match CPU to binary (e.g. some opcode extensions only existing on some CPUs)
qingcharles··on Performance Improvements in .NET 11
The software has to start clipping the audio above "100%", but I use it regularly in say, VLC, because I might want the volume slightly higher without increasing my whole system volume just to hear a quiet section. I rarely notice any degradation at 150%.
qingcharles··on Performance Improvements in .NET 11
I can't even remember the last time I used MSSQL with .NET. I'm embarrassed that I worked on projects now that were paying huge sums for licenses when .NET works so absolutely well with every other DB.

These days I just use EF with Sqlite on 99% of my projects.

qingcharles··on Introducing System One Models and Jev
My primary beef with smart home (having tried it) is that every person that visits your home ends up confused about some element of it. A light switch that goes up and down is universally understood.
qingcharles··on Introducing System One Models and Jev
That really helped figuring out what this thing does, thank you.
qingcharles··on Gemini 3.8 Live and 3.8 Live Extended Thinking
I've used Antigravity as my main coding agent on one of my biggest projects for about a year. It's been great for me. (and I use Claude, Codex, Grok and Muse for all the other projects)
qingcharles··on Let's make quality the norm again
Games from a couple of years ago are insanely cheap on Steam. You can buy AAA titles regularly for $2-3 each. I don't have a very new GPU, so I stick great games in my wishlist and wait till they are essentially free.
qingcharles··on The Beauty of Roundabouts
I feel like the author would appreciate Milton Keynes, which is an entire city of 180 roundabouts on a grid system:

https://lostcolonials.wordpress.com/2015/09/20/milton-keynes...

Fun for drifting late at night. Like a chav version of tōge from Initial D.

qingcharles··on The Beauty of Roundabouts
You almost missed it!
qingcharles··on Fixing an NZXT Signal 4K30 part 2: the green/pink video bug
Eh, I learn a ton from just watching Claude tear a piece of code to pieces and working through all the problems and debugging with it. Sure, I could do it myself the long way (beast mode?), but I don't have time to spend an entire day figuring out how to remove the annoying boot logo and delay from a monitor. If I can get Claude to work as my partner and get it done in 15 minutes, then it gets done now, where it didn't before.

Even something like setting up a dev environment for a random embedded processor that I will never once use again in my life. It's easier to get Claude to track down all the files and figure out how to install them and get them running. All these things are just force-multipliers.

qingcharles··on Apple's Dimensional Drawings
Haha, I didn't recognize your username, but now I look at your blog it was your work I was thinking of :)

Well, that screws my idea then. Best to just 3D scan the cars and model them in 3D with no perspective then!

qingcharles··on Amazon vs. Perplexity – U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
Illinois makes it a state crime to violate terms of service.

Sec. 17-51. Computer tampering. (a) A person commits computer tampering when he or she knowingly and without the authorization of a computer's owner or in excess of the authority granted to him or her: (1) Accesses or causes to be accessed a computer or any part thereof, a computer network, or a program or data; (2) Accesses or causes to be accessed a computer or any part thereof, a computer network, or a program or data, and obtains data or services; (a-10) For purposes of subsection (a), accessing a computer network is deemed to be with the authorization of a computer's owner if: (2) the owner authorizes the public to access the computer network and the person accessing the computer network complies with all terms or conditions for use of the computer network that are imposed by the owner;

qingcharles··on Apple's Dimensional Drawings
Interesting point. They need to photograph them with slit-scan photography.
qingcharles··on Devil's Arrows: Ancient builders hauled 55k-lb stones 11 miles for UK stone row
Asterix taught me the word menhir.
qingcharles··on Fixing an NZXT Signal 4K30 part 2: the green/pink video bug
This is a golden age of finally being able to fix all the niggling little bugs in these bits of hardware. So many of them are wide open, the friction of trying to figure out how to get the firmware cracked open, creating a build environment etc was just too huge before. I wonder how long before all these manufacturers start signing and encrypting their updates to stop us fixing their shit?
qingcharles··on Designing for Dual Screen and Foldable Devices with CSS (2023)
That's interesting. It's not just left-handed people, you're right. It's whole countries with LtR or right-bound standard for book opening, e.g. Middle-East, Asia etc.
qingcharles··on Designing for Dual Screen and Foldable Devices with CSS (2023)
It is if you hold it half-open like a book -- you can't get your finger into the middle. Apple has added some sort of support for this scenario in iOS that they were demoing for the Duo.
qingcharles··on I spent $220 on Google app ads and 60% of the installs were robots
It's literally the quickest way to burn money.

Making PPC ads work is an enormous skill and some small business deciding to throw their keywords into Google Ad Manager is a sure fire way to lose your shirt. It is very, very, very hard to make a profit off PPC.

qingcharles··on A misalignment of AI in mathematics
They're not deliberately misreading it, they are simply just not reading it and just assuming they know what it says.
qingcharles··on Usenet rewind archive search engine
Wild that I put my street address in some of my posts. Those were different times indeed.
qingcharles··on GrapheneOS' rewritten Messages app is released
Design is so personal. I love Material 3 Expressive personally. Each to their own :)
qingcharles··on Proof of Capture: Apple Reference Image, but open source and using steganography
It's not massively helpful for a court case, IMO. This has been handled the same way since the invention of photography: ask the photographer to swear under oath they took the photo. (technically, laying a foundation for the evidence)
qingcharles··on iPhone Duo
I hope you had a warning sign that said "Beware of the leopard".
qingcharles··on iPhone Duo
I coded one of these for whatever was the latest Nokia handset ~2005. Live on-stage reveal and demo to the world's press by CEO IIRC. The software on the phone was supposed to run off our co-host server, but bugfixing down to the wire, so nobody knew but the demo was running off a half-built PC in my buddy's closet connected to his janky cable modem with us watching and sweating and praying. It would have been really, really bad if that demo had failed on-stage.
qingcharles··on I advertise malicious software on Google Ads
I would too. Google Ads are the absolute quickest way to lose your shirt. You need masses of experience (or a straight scam) to run a profitable ad campaign. Their agents will hound you to the ends of the Earth the moment you start reducing your spend.
