qihqi··on Beijing is banning all foreign media from publishing online in China
It looks like China will change the 'blacklist' model of the Great Fire Wall to a 'whitelist' model. That is the only way they can enforce this law.

Maybe they got tired of having banned content mirrored by un-blocked IP ranges and constantly having to hunt them down.

qihqi··on PCB design now supports LEDs and Matias switches
You can always press Cmd and T with different hands... (assuming there is Cmd in both side of your board).
qihqi··on Ask HN: What is your favorite forum?
Reddit! ps. please don't kick me out I haven't mentioned 4chan yet. pps. oops.
qihqi··on Maru turns Android smartphones into portable PCs
People usually don't just want several views to the phone to be in sync (it really should), but also want different devices to be in sync. The second feature has much more demand and the current approach is syncing through cloud. Which happens to solve the first issue as well (at least for data).
qihqi··on How Soylent and Oculus Could Fix the Prison System
The lack of change is terrifying though. Eating sushi 24/7 is not pleasant either.
qihqi··on 34 little POS machines
I wish things like square and paypal solves this problem.
qihqi··on Ask HN: Do you use an old or 'unfashionable' programming language?
Though being mainstream, C++ and Java are probably the most "boring" languages you can use LOL.
qihqi··on Laid-off IT workers muzzled as H-1B debate heats up
H1-B and Outsourcing to offshore are two completely different things. As outsourcing means hand part of a job to contactor firm which could either be local or foreign. Foreign contracting firm don't need visas, and local contracting firm can either hire Americans or sponsor visas.

The real problem is that a foreign worker should not get paid less doing the same job American do. That will kill the incentive and it's also very inhumane and racist to pay less for the same work based just on citizenship.

qihqi··on Why Shitty Products Survive and Thrive
The shittiest aspect of Office is the price.
qihqi··on Yiwu: the Chinese city where Christmas is made and sold
The manufactures in Yiwu is really the "last mile manufacture". Most things are made in other places and only ensembled in Yiwu, especially Christmas goods, as those are quite voluptuous.

The success of Yiwu is concentrating factories around China to one place, thus decreasing market efficiency.

qihqi··on I run a SV startup but refuse to own a cellphone
You can own a phone and not check all the time-wasting stuff too. Just don't install those apps.

You need to look at fb occationally use the browser. Fb has a decent mobile optimized site.

qihqi··on What I Learned from Losing $200M
"Volatility is the wrong number to be plugged into the wrong formula (BS) in hope to get the right answer."
qihqi··on Glassdoor: Airbnb dethrones Google as the best tech company to work for in U.S
Welcome to Oracle.
qihqi··on We ditched Google Analytics
Random fact: GA cookie is distinct from adwords(google.com) cookie, and it is illegal for Google to join those (not sure if it is even technically feasible).
qihqi··on Sssgen: Make static websites simple again
Exactly this. This is not what "200-lines of simple Python" should look like.
qihqi··on Today's world is amd64, armv7, and soon aarch64. Everything else is dead
I think it is merely an effort to not give Intel the monopoly over Google's datacenters. Because otherwise, Google will not have any negotiating power regarding prices of the chips.
qihqi··on Google services set for 'return' to China
Even though it is not said in the article, I believe this is just google play & google play services returning to China, not Search or Youtube.

GPS is essential for wearables too work, and many fragmentation of Android market

qihqi··on Problems with Go's design
Go is inspired by the C++ subset that Google choose to use (Just look for the Google's C++ style guide to look for things that Google banned). So in many ways, it's chosen to work as C++ in lots of corner cases.

In fact, that enabled automatic tool to convert Go compiler written in Google's C++ to Go.

qihqi··on Data is not an asset, it’s a liability
Well, Asset = liability + owner contribution. /s
qihqi··on Jeff Bezos Says Amazon Won’t Tolerate ‘Callous’ Management Practices
As an exAmazonian I think Amazon treated me decently. I ultimately left for some place that treat me even better (with free food and better pay); but I did not believe that I am entitled to those perks. Judging by life of the few Amazonians I know personally, most of them agree with me. I only know one person who complained heavily about Amazon and it is more about his team and having a crappy boss than about the company.
qihqi··on Jeff Bezos' email to Amazonians
While true. Most Amazonians don't work with Bezos directly.
