qersist3nce··on Why the Guardian is no longer posting on X
>You haven't made any kind of case that The Guardian is "undermining the free flow of information"

I view it as an attempt by a group of left-leaning media/news outlets hoping to de-crown X out of its popularity as a neutral forum for expressing political views.

Yes, these are my opinions or ... "comment replies". People can post their comments or fact-checks, the things Guardian people don't like to engage with.

qersist3nce··on Why the Guardian is no longer posting on X
Well from their post alone it seems they would impose their particular world-view in their comment section. Isn't Guardian a "news" outlet, by which being "neutral" and "accommodating to a plurality of ideas" is a inherent virtue?

Also it appears their editorial board and "community" is not able to defend their political stances on a free playground.

>The Guardian isn't stopping you

I think they would have, if there was a technical way to do so. And it's not just about Guardian at this point.

qersist3nce··on Why the Guardian is no longer posting on X
> Maybe I'm out of the loop here, where did the Guardian try to undermine the free flow of information?

"given the often disturbing content promoted or found on the platform, including far-right conspiracy theories and racism"

Disturbing to who? far-right compared to what point of reference? Which theories are conspiracy and which are legit? What is the definition of racism , who are racist people and why is it a bad thing?

Discussion about any of the above points happen in a "free" environment in which all parties can express their views.

qersist3nce··on New insights into the origin of the Indo-European languages
There is also a micro-aggression against Iranians by fringe communities of Europe/US and even our Arab/Turk neighbors! They somehow think that the name of Iran is "fake" or "manufactured" in 1930s! at the request of Hitler [1].

While we literally have attestations in government letters (in almost every century prior to 20th), local literature and population awareness of the continuity of the freaking name of the country but somehow they completely ignore it.

They also frequently use the word "Aryan" as a derogatory/fake term for Iranians and say "why you don't look like white Europeans if you claim to be Aryan".

qersist3nce··on Show HN: Rarbg on IPFS
Can you explain bit more? Isn't the dump of last RARBG magnet links on the order of MBs? We can just download it and grep in plain text. I don't get what is the role of SQLite or IPFS here.
qersist3nce··on Rarbg Is No More
Sorry to see it go.

While we are at it, an honest question: Why should _anyone_ undertake the legal risk, monetary cost and development time burden for maintaining a public tracker?

What would release teams gain from setting up encoding pipelines and upholding their networking infrastructure?

So these crawl torrent indexers and provide search functionality?

Do they also search private indexers?

qersist3nce··on Rust has been forked to the Crab Language
Slashdot was sold to another media company which had other priorities. Are you aware of its "redesign" drama strictly followed by that same new leadership? Many users left then and there.
qersist3nce··on Rust has been forked to the Crab Language
Would the Rust foundation be ok with SQLite CoC? or a software project with a CoC in compliance with Uganda laws?
qersist3nce··on Rust has been forked to the Crab Language
Many years ago, I read a comment on Slashdot saying "the fact of a programming language having a "code of conduct" makes it ripe for everlasting drama and politics."

It made sense then and it makes sense now.

qersist3nce··on Popular Pirate Bay proxy site disappears from GitHub
how do you control the quality and encoding of the show?

And why is there a separate *arr app for every content? (music album, tv, movie, book, subtile(!),...)

qersist3nce··on Popular Pirate Bay proxy site disappears from GitHub
Can someone tell me what is the appeal of *arr apps? I'm not a hoarder or professional movie/show watcher, why should I set up what is basically a glorified "periodic metadata downloader with a tiles UI"?

I tested radarr and readarr recently. Didn't find out why people use them. Like libgen was better than readarr and I couldn't even select the encoding/file size of a movie title in radarr (there are some predefined profiles and you can define yours too but I expected something waay too simpler to do this. Like if you select fhd, it may download a very large file. You have to manually set the bitrate slider for all profiles, but then you may risk losing some available item if the release is very new and not encoded. I mean the UX was confusing)

And I see people host yet another tiles UI (Plex/Jellyfin) on top of that just to show a folder structure with pretty thumbnails? Each one of these apps is usually written in C#, taking ~300MB of RAM mind you...

What would help me is simply a search box that crawls all available torrents and presents rows with filtering based on size and encoding. I tested prowlarr for this but the UX was poor.

I must be missing something very obvious here.

qersist3nce··on Gilbert Strang's final lecture at MIT: May 15, 11:00am
Thanks Prof Strang.

Are there any "side channels" that host university lecture videos and course materials for less fortunate students in 3rd world countries? The ones on MIT courseware or Youtube are old.

I mean something along the lines of academic torrents etc...

qersist3nce··on An ancient Indian Buddhist monk buried in Athens
I'm interested in this too.

I've heard an account, that some Byzantine queen-consort was told by a soothsayer that she (the queen) in her pervious life, was a witch.

So the queen asked/persuaded the king to remove this from Christianity.

qersist3nce··on An ancient Indian Buddhist monk buried in Athens
Why the ancient world seems mysterious and completely orthogonal to our modern ways?

At some point in history, "something" happened, I don't know what. Like Augustus a Roman emperor, was initiated into the mystery of two goddesses? What was that? The Sage caste of india could just decide to self-immolate? Why not other people of india and why certain caste did stuff? Why Marcus Aurelius was so wise and unique?

Why later kings and heads of states and general people were not like this?

qersist3nce··on Moviemaking and gamemaking are converging
>No, I don't buy either.

Nothing of value is lost. Nowadays games are manufactured dopamine-gamifying cashgrabs and movies are propaganda outlets for whatever care-free non-STEM academics have brewed up as "current thing".

2000s was the golden era of gaming. Just compare remakes of RE2 and RE3 with the original PS1 ones. Or the new Wolfenstein series with Castle Wolfenstein.

qersist3nce··on Alexander the ‘Accursed’ and Zoroastrianism
In Sassanian sources he was refereed as "Alaksandar ī hrōmāy" and "Eskandar the Gajostak [accursed]".

Note they used hrōmāy (Roman) in spite of him being Greek, possibly due to Hellenic influence on Roman civilization.

Accursed cause he burned the original Avesta and plundered ērān-šahr (country of Iran) and moved all its gold to the original homeland.

Fun fact, in Persian, the name of the country Greece is Yunan referring to the Iona region in western Anatolia (current day Turkey).

qersist3nce··on An ancient Persian way to keep cool (2021)
Saffavids relocated Armenians from their homeland in Caucasus. Many died en-route. These kinds of attritions and second-class citizen status later imposed by Ottomans resulted in Armenians losing their homeland of eastern Anatolia and Caucasus to some degree. Look up the recent Azeri-Turkiye invasion of the region.
qersist3nce··on An ancient Persian way to keep cool (2021)
As I said, they didn't enforce their ideology on the conquered people. They just extracted tax and moved on. Abrahamics on the other hand....

How many statues and relics did the Abrahamics demolish? We even see this in modern times (Bamiyan Budda statue destroyed by Taliban, Palmyra demolished by ISIS, Islamic Republic preventing people from visiting Cyrus grave on his day)

>but the graphs tells us iran was in war and was sanctioned

Saddam initiated the attack but only because Khomeini weakened the Army and cleansed it from opposition to his ideology. They also wanted to export their Islamic revolution to the neighboring countries that scared the Arab monarchs into supporting Saddam. He destabilized the region and basically became the new Ummayids (shia-flavored).

Khomeini and friends executed and banished the entrepreneurs that funded factories and industries. They put islam above the nation of Iran (he literally mocked nationalists who were saying "we are Iranian first and Muslim second" on recording). Khomeini and friends were advocating that "devout Muslims should be preferred against non-practicing experts for job positions". How does this help progress?

>Atrocities of safavids were after iran was completely destroyed by mongols

So? They could like "not" force-convert all population? Did mongols enforce Tengrism by sword? Also by "reunified the land" you mean disbanding the local governments, mutilating local Shahs that were around like 1000 years? (Shirvan-shahis, Bavands, etc). How exactly do you think a state could be "reunified"? Have you ever asked why Armenians are in Iran mainland in Isfahan? Or why Georgians asked their christian brothers (Russians) in 18th century to come help them get free from Qajars?

>But sassanid empire was a caste society. So which caste were the arabs?

Aniranians. Did Sassanids enforce Zoroastrianism by sword? Was the Mesopotamia Persianized in ~600 years Iranians had control of it? How come basically all of MENA is Arabized after the 700 AD?

>Mongols turning persian into main language seems like an anti-arab measure

Thank Samanids and Saffarids for that. They created the bureaucracy of Khorasan based on Persian culture. Turks and Mongols just adopted it. If the region was arabized before 12th century, mongols would have just used Arabic.

> Persia's history is a bit more complex than "then Islam came and everything went downhill".

Yeah, right. Generic PC talk.

Just look at the state-of-affairs in the current uprising in Iran. What was the reason for it?

Or look at some economic progress graphs comparing pre and post 1979 revolution. Or how the constitution revolution failed in the 20th century (law should come from Allah not Man). Or the atrocities of the Saffavids in 1500s. Or the "Arab-vs-Ajam" racism of Abbasid and Ummayids dynasties.

Some names and hints for those willing to check for themselves: Al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf, Qutayba ibn Muslim [and his campaign in Transoxiana], the concept of "Mawali"

Basically Iran endured 3 catastrophic civilization-threatening level invasions. Alexander (Hellenistic), Arabs (Islamic) and Mongols. Though the latter didn't enforce Tengrism on the population. And the name of the country was always Iran. There are literally stone reliefs from 4th AD proving this.

qersist3nce··on Show HN: I 3D scanned the interior of the Great Pyramid at Giza
Thanks for the amazing work! Here are my notes:

1- Actual surveying of the site was a bit annoying. On one hand, I wanted to scan everything and look at every detail. On the other, I didn't know where I was and didn't want to miss out by my depth-first approach. The automatic surveying routine (clicking next) moves the camera way too fast. Also I guess it doesn't present everything we know of the site. For example I wanted to have a more clear look at the shafts.

So A) provide a minimap for every detail we know of the site to make idealists of us, happy :)

B) slow down the speed of auto-surveyor.

I experienced these same technical problems while traversing the Perspolis site: https://persepolis.getty.edu/

2- What's with the utility wiring in the King's chamber? Is it customary in archeological sites? I thought it should have been done more neatly.

Also, do the "cosmic ray detectors" work by battery power in those wooden boxes? Is there a rule that scientific instruments should be in wooden boxes?

3- How do we know what the main purpose of the Great Pyramid was? Why were the chambers named as King or Queen's chamber when we didn't find any mummies or hieroglyphs inside?

This question especially becomes important when we don't know what the purpose of those clear-cut shafts in chambers was.

4- As an archeologist, what do you think of the works of Erich von Daniken or the claims that ancient human technology couldn't have cut those clear cuts or moved those giant stones?

5- Before seeing this, I just woke up early from a nightmare. I rule out most of it due my brain mixing my personal experiences of the day and university. But, the strange part of that dream was that at the end of it, someone trapped someone else (like in a dome wire-frame cage that is used in catching birds) , and I heard a serious stern voice ordering him to "dig". Next up I woke up and saw this on HN, deciding to have a virtual visit of the internal chambers of the Great Pyramid. Phew! What a coincidence!
