qeorge··on Amazon Local Register
In addition to the visible data (the card number, the expiration, and the CVV), there is other information encoded on the stripe that you cannot see (its called Track 2 data).

A swiped transaction will include the Track 2 data, but a keyed one will not. The Track 2 data proves that a physical card was present, which carries a far lower risk of fraud, and thus grants a lower processing rate.

Notably, in the recent Target breach, the Track 2 data was stolen as well. This means the thieves could print up real, swipeable cards.

qeorge··on Announcing UberPool
I had to walk ~1/5 of a mile to get to the nearest one.

Which is what, a 4 minute walk? That seems pretty minimal to me.

qeorge··on The Lowdown on Lidar
Speeding would require the police to record/archive video, vs. just a single photo which contains both your car being behind the white line and the red light.

Also, the red light ticketing programs are often administered by private companies, without officers being involved. Speeding ticket video would need to recorded by the police.

All that said, I think its a great idea and the obstacles can surely be worked out.

Finally, a tip: if you are ever pulled over and you plan to dispute the arrest, request the officer's dashboard video ASAP. This will ensure it is preserved and available for you at trial; if you don't request it quickly enough it might not be available when you do. Don't count on it being around even a week - request it the very next day.

qeorge··on The Dentist Office Software Story
Incidentally, if you're looking for a niche software opportunity, you could do worse than appointment software for dentists. I spent a fair amount of time speaking to dental practice managers about that specific product idea (I was teaching myself to place cold calls, not really interested in it).

Almost all dental office managers I spoke to 1) used something called Eaglesoft (www.eaglesoft.net) and 2) hated it.

qeorge··on Mark Cuban: If Your Company Is Moving For Tax Reasons, I'm Selling Your Stock
"It is the job of a business to make money, the most money possible, at all costs."

I hear this a lot, but its not true. Why do you think this is true? I think this belief often come from a misunderstanding of fiduciary duty.

For context, I own 3 businesses. They do not exist to make the most money possible at all costs.

Here is one example where sloppy watch list policies like these resulted in the prolonged torture of an innocent person:

qeorge··on A brand new Foursquare, with a brand new logo and look
Sounds like it does! I haven't used the Yelp app in a long time. Glad they added tips.
qeorge··on A brand new Foursquare, with a brand new logo and look
I first heard of foursquare from Fred Wilson, who described getting a recommendation on a specific dish off the menu via a friend through Foursquare.

That was so COOL! Much cooler than "personalized local search". Maybe they could go back to that? I can get recommendations for just a restaurant from lots of apps, but "go to this restaurant and order this dish" is currently underserved, and more useful.

qeorge··on List of Web Business Models
Disagree! This is a great list, and I hadn't seen it. Thanks for posting it, applecore.
qeorge··on Duckie: Rubber Ducking as a service
This is great! Would you prefer to have the domain RubberDuckers.com for this project?

My biz partner and I had a similar idea but never launched it! We still have the domain though, and you are welcome to it. I'm so glad that you made this!

qeorge··on Show HN: EphChat – Ephemeral, Anonymous, Encrypted Realtime Chat
This is misleading - it uses Firebase for the server! How can the OP claim that the server is not storing messages if the OP doesn't control the server?

I have no reason to trust that Firebase isn't storing the messages. Why should I?

qeorge··on Testing a New Way to Discover and Buy Products on Facebook
I like this for microtransactions, but I don't buy it for physical goods.

Couple reasons:

First, I'm surprised that anyone would purchase with so little information. A photo/price doesn't seem like enough room to make the sale.

Second, the merchant loses the chance to upsell and/or retarget the customer.

What's the counterargument? That the conversion rate is improved enough to offset these downsides?

qeorge··on Ask HN: How do you showcase work from previous jobs?
"being able to actually run a live version of what you've done in the past"

This is a non-starter. Its not your IP; you can't keep a copy around (even if its just for archival purposes).

qeorge··on Commencement address by Bill and Melinda Gates
Reminder: you aren't Bill or Melinda Gates, but you are still rich from software. Maybe you could spend some of your funny money on someone else's healthcare?

I just sponsored a hysterectomy for $180 (1 year of Netflix) in 3 clicks on Watsi. That's crazy.

Maybe you can sponsor someone too: https://watsi.org/fund-treatments

qeorge··on Negative SEO Does Exist
The problem is that in this case, "putting a red flag on [a website]" means creating 10s or 100s of thousands of spam blog comments on random websites.

Abusing your metaphor further: it would be more like spray painting the phone number of the shady business on every house in town. Certainly the officials would have to notice them then, thanks to your good works! Too bad for the home owners though...

qeorge··on Follow up to the investigation results
Referring to Julie-Ann's complaint as "histrionic claims about gender discrimination" is unjustified and offensive.

To do so implies that she invented those feelings to further her case. There is absolutely nothing in the record to support such an accusation.

qeorge··on Follow up to the investigation results
Actually, we just started a paid plan with them. We had been considering the move to GitHub, but wanted to see how this scenario played out before doing so. The issues Julie-Ann faced are important to me personally and to my company, and we couldn't support an organization that allowed such behavior to remain unchecked.

I was impressed by GitHub's response in this case. A founder being forced out* of the company s/he founded, especially one as white hot as GitHub, is not a decision made lightly. It signaled to me that the issue had been taken seriously, albeit too late. But I am comfortable supporting them going forward.

*That Mr. Preston-Warner was forced out is my own between-the-lines reading of his resignation once he lost support of the board.

I agree with you, and its hard for me to view carpet bombing a city with pesticides as somehow interfering less with the environment.
qeorge··on Freelancer.com is destroying my life
Update: I've emailed several times now with Matt, and he's definitely on top of the situation. I get the impression that he's being vague in his responses to respect OP's privacy (and the others involved). I appreciate that, and he's done a stellar job of responding in general.

Anyway, I think there is more than meets the eye here, and I should have given Freelancer.com a bit more benefit of the doubt. I do hope that eventually more information will become available, as this is a serious issue.

qeorge··on Freelancer.com is destroying my life
He did respond a second time and basically said nothing helpful (see his response down thread - he copied it into the email)

They've lost my business, and I trust the rest of this community will respond in kind.

Penny wise, pound foolish, as they say.

qeorge··on Freelancer.com is destroying my life
Good point- I have also emailed matt@freelancer.com. I have spent a good amount of money with freelancer.com, but never again.

Edit- got an email back from Matt in about 20 minutes, saying they are looking into it. Fingers crossed, OP - we are behind you.

qeorge··on Boston Doctors Can Now Prescribe You a Bike
In Greensboro, NC, Greensboro Housing Coalition is a non-profit that wants everyone to have safe housing, regardless of income levels. A common problem with low-income housing is cockroaches, bad insulation, and other conditions which lead to a much higher rate of asthma in children who grow up in such homes.

They are putting together a study to test whether improving the condition of these home would reduce the incidence of asthma in affected children (and the costs associated with the resulting frequent hospital visits) so much as to be a more cost effective use of Medicaid funds.

If the study finds that this is the case, and their experience suggests that will, the end goal is to enable doctors to prescribe home inspections and improvements, and for those actions to be paid for by medicaid/insurance. It would be a clear win/win: healthier children and lower costs across the board.

If this interests you, please consider a donation to http://greensborohousingcoalition.com . They are an excellent organization that will make efficient use of your donation.

qeorge··on Show HN: Snappy Checkout – Stripe Checkout with full-featured dashboard, admin
Sure!

I would like to see:

    - hosted downloads (not my Dropbox)
    - hosted checkout pages (not lightbox)
    - what the dunning emails look like, and if I can edit them
    - the docs for the API
    - more information in general (the site is only 1 page, hard to trust)
Those are the big things.
qeorge··on Show HN: Snappy Checkout – Stripe Checkout with full-featured dashboard, admin
As you say, I see SaaS as primarily a B2B product. I have trouble naming successful B2C SaaS products, outside of perhaps Dropbox (although I still think Dropbox is primarily B2B, at least in terms of revenue).

But we probably agree on this: if you charge $5/month, this product is not for you. If you charge $50/month, the fees are negligible.

qeorge··on Show HN: Snappy Checkout – Stripe Checkout with full-featured dashboard, admin
I'm not sold on this product yet, for other reasons, but the transaction fees are very compelling to me.

For the typical $5/mo SaaS subscription

This is the problem. Typical Saas subscriptions are significantly more than $5/month, at least if you want to stay in business. $50/month (as a starting tier) is more normal and could actually be sustainable.

If you're charging only $5/month for your SaaS, then you will be unlikely to have enough margins to pay for any external services (and possibly your rent).

For reference, Gumroad charges .30 + 5%. So on a $50/month subscription that's going to be $2.80, whereas with Snappy Checkout its only going to be $1.95. More importantly, as you charge more (e.g., $200/month), the gap would widen even further.

We currently process about $3k/month through Gumroad and e-Junkie, so we're just about at the point where it makes sense to look at other options. If we can move to something like this as opposed to rolling our own, I'm very interested.

qeorge··on Male, female or custom? Facebook adds options for users to self-identify
"I don't want to be pressured into referring to a male as female if he really is a male"

Exactly! And that's why changes like this are so important. I, like you, don't want to be pressured into referring to someone by a gender identity which does not match their reality.

qeorge··on Male, female or custom? Facebook adds options for users to self-identify
Way to go, Facebook.
