q92z8oeif··on iPhone crypto hid al-Qaida link to naval base shooting, AG fumes
Why not the opposite take: take the inability to identify the threat with all the privacy invasion they have a right to so far, as a rational reason to revoke those?
q92z8oeif··on Smashing Eggs, Dumping Milk: Farmers Waste More Food Than Ever
This have only moved the waste from one place to another.

producers > stores > consumers.

The same waste would happen in the system. but now it moved all to the first step.

This is not saying that this is OK. This is just highlighting a problem that was always there and nobody cared/cares :(

q92z8oeif··on The Fed Will Buy Bond ETFs Now
and still, not a tiny dent in the two party system. Which proves that your history is anecdotal with very little (none?) significance statistically.
q92z8oeif··on Safeboot: Booting Linux Safely
There is nothing like "ARM" in the market.

There is CPU/SoC X by Y, built on top of a license from ARM.

So you would have to boycott N companies instead of just AMD & Intel :( And even more so, since all their customers are EOM that are happy to sign NDAs.

q92z8oeif··on PCSX2 PS2 Emulator: Progress report Q3 2019 to Q1 2020
I wonder if a forum outside of the silicon valley bubble would have so so many apple apologists like we have in this thread.

---

apple is bullish on metal vs vulkan because they want to lock in apps. and they have the upper hand because by not implementing vulkan, they force everyone to chose between the money on IOS or everything else. it's not a technical decision.

middle ware provide only the minimum common denominator, or expensive translation functions, it is not even close to providing the flexibility and speed modern emulators need.

absolutely nobody plays on apple hardware. specially not the people that are into gaming enough to write an emulator. no matter how much you personally want to believe the opposite.

q92z8oeif··on The Original Cookie specification from 1997 was GDPR compliant (2019)
back in 1999 or so I did a small research to check cookie support on the main browsers at the time. There was a few odd ones, but mostly mozilla and IE4 were the big ones at the time.

The mozilla cookie spec used language like "up to" for everything. Microsoft released a copy of the specification on MSDN with all the "up to" replaced with "at least". So IE4+ would support urls "at least" 1000chars. cookies at least whatever-limit it was supposed to have. etc.

They basically one-upped mozilla by offering web devs infinite resources that would, by definition, break on any browser following mozilla sane specification. While, also by definition, supporting everything made under the mozilla specification.

And all the users and webmaster of that time are directly responsible for the privacy mess we are today. And sadly, they are repeating everything again by adopting GoogleChrome and it breakneck speed in setting "standards" that self-serve Google.

This standards trumping for convenience is the ultimate incarnation of embrace-extend-extinguish and we can't stop falling for it!

q92z8oeif··on Why are Russian coronavirus doctors mysteriously falling out of windows?
wait. it was not fakenews?
q92z8oeif··on Gnome is not the default for Fedora Workstation
good to see the consistency on their verbose blog post aligned with their design philosophy.

"We copied apple position for buttons and alienated every gnome user from the past decade because it is THE button position!"

"you can't move dialog windows. it's not where the dialog is, it is THE position of the dialog window."

"rewrite entire project from scratch just so we can have javascript extensions? ...there's no alpha or beta channels now, the rewrite is THE stable channel!"

q92z8oeif··on GeckoView for Android
Maybe people who use extensions that disable all that and let them enable those per-site they trust?

If it were truly open source, we would, gasp, have the best of both worlds by making the UI sane and what the end user wants. Not what a few in the inner circle thinks possible in their limited life experience.

Mozilla killed more projects trying to fix firefox than i care to count. icecat i think was the last one. fenned-by-fdroid was killed and resurrected a couple times, last people i know that contributed left when user.js was disabled after a PR from a google engineer was merged "to make fennec better follow android security team recommendations" or something on those lines.

q92z8oeif··on GeckoView for Android
> GeckoView exposes a wide range of privacy

that's is a fallacy and you know it!

There are ZERO settings exposed to the end user.

Those settings are exposed to the App embedding geckoviewer. In other words, the privacy settings are in the hands of the actor who benefit from Advertising by tracking the user!

> GeckoView also exposes a WebExtension API

again to the app.

q92z8oeif··on The new dot com bubble is here: it’s called online advertising (2019)
Love they got a online ad revenue graph that ends in 2017 and then just "predict" a dashed line moving where it left off, always up.

despite that we all know it took a nosedive, along most other revenues, in 2020 ;)

q92z8oeif··on Surface Go 2, Surface Book 3, Surface Headphones 2 and Surface Earbuds
First, you should not be using the store. It is an also-run of an anti-feature. Just ignore it for the bloatware it is.

Second, ignore tablet mode. It's one of those things developed by underfunded teams. Just use it as what it is, a portable PC. If you configure windows to have >2px thick borders you will not miss 'tablet mode' or whatever it is. Just enable all settings on the quick side bar thingy to toggle auto-rotate and you are set.

And finally, i agree with you on the keyboard. It's sad :( pen writing recognition was supposed to be the saving grace, but it only works minimally OK for japanese and chinese. No hope for english and let alone for other latin languages. and even using with chinese text, the input UI completely kills your ability to use things you would have on a keyboard like shift, shortcuts, arrows, etc.

q92z8oeif··on Linux touchpad like a MacBook Pro, May 2020 update
2015 15" if that makes any difference, but last models (2012 i think) had the same problem.

Maybe they optimize to the wrong finger size to the point you can't even if you try, and i trigger the bug too often.

q92z8oeif··on Ask HN: Browser Based or Desktop App?
datapoint 1: if the user is not on the platform you provide your desktop app, you lost that client.

this alone would steer me into browser based. And by browser i mean browser, javascript even as an enhancement. but i guess on this i am on the minority since most people here assume browser means chrome. sigh.

q92z8oeif··on Linux touchpad like a MacBook Pro, May 2020 update
with my work enforced MBP most of the time i want to right click i end up clicking and triggering an unintended consequence just because i have my two fingers too close. On linux i never had this happen even on the cheapest touchpads.
q92z8oeif··on Apple, Google ban location tracking in apps using their contact-tracing system
> The larger a company is, the lower are chances that everyone would stay silent in case of a (systematic) breach of those principles

that's wildly wrong hypothesis. the complete opposite of these ideas are uncontested knowledge in academia, and in popular culture as well.

see Hannah Arendt's work. (which doesn't even include profit and personal gains!)

q92z8oeif··on Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage Now Has S3 Compatible APIs
What's the point of the Alliance in this case?

if I use against-the-alliance corp, i will just pay the storage+download from backblaze, just the same as using in-bed-with-alliance corp.

Or does the alliance will ensure i only get charged for 1download per file per billing cycle, no matter if the CDN cache can't hold all the data and they download it many times? Does the alliance ensure (and more importantly, who monitors) it?

q92z8oeif··on New 13-inch MacBook Pro
summary: minimally updated cpu and storage. AND WE PUT BACK THE ESCAPE KEY LOT AT THE NICE PICURE (but don't us to explicitly say it). also we swear the keyboard might be fixed this time and we will leave you hanging if there's still a headphone port.
q92z8oeif··on I’ve Consed Every Pair
problem with those frameworks that "just works" is that they get old pretty darn fast.

it handles all your sql and auth cookies? too bad now there's an easy way every script kiddie can now login as admin or guess cookies without the security header du jour.

It's all nice and all when it's being actively updated. But arc, rails, phoenix-ecto, node/react, drupal, spring, etc it all get old pretty soon when the core maintainers loose focus, and then instead of just keeping an eye on the latest best practices and implementing it yourself, you have to dive deep down into years of feature creep and bad coding practices to do the little thing you need to keep things going.
