q92z8oeif··on U.S. Economy Shrinks at 4.8% Pace, Signaling Start of Recession
> Unrest is what happens in Venezuela or Yemen, etc

Usually unrest is not decided so naively like that.

For example, you can organize and take political action just fine, but your larger encumbered opponent might want to start unrest for you https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haymarket_affair#May_Day_parad...

> aligning their actions with the interests poor/middle class

Any attempt to recognize classes exits will lead to class war. Everyone is upper class, or waiting to join upper class, anytime now.

Fact that US still have to break down so much into racial cohorts in polls is weird. And offer nothing of value other than the generalizations like "who tend to be poorer" that doesn't help the discussion nor analysis. What do you do with this information in this context?

How about breaking down by religion or something else that at least points to what kind of media/message the group is more exposed to? or something that hints at extraneous interests, like homeowners or not. There are so much better ways to break down this data.

q92z8oeif··on Inside of a Tractor Cab [video]
good luck attaching implements/heads/refilling/dealing with rocks/replacing blades because of said rocks/etc remotely any time soon.
q92z8oeif··on De-Googling: My Progress
ironically, if you add the "youtube enhancer" add-on/extension, which allows you to bypass ads, the crashes go away.
q92z8oeif··on De-Googling: My Progress
Having used DDG for several years now as the default on all my devices, i can say that since December the results are completely useless. Not sure what happened.

I had never to use "!g" before. Now it is required for 1/3 of my regular searches, and "!ig" for 100% of the image "!i" searches.

q92z8oeif··on Internet Explorer Is Evil (2002)
So true.

for chrome, every single point here is true (just replace outlook with gmail): A Glimpse in to an "Enterprise" Intranet

plus, IE never caries around my login and offer to it to more sites than facebook, like chrome does with my google login.

q92z8oeif··on Soros fund management backs electric-vehicle charging startup
> Can we please just get a state government

No.

How about you give your business to a company that accepts credit card, like any gas station, instead?

q92z8oeif··on Ask HN: What payment processor can a private individual use to offer a service?
Afraid the answer will be None.
q92z8oeif··on The Decline of Usability
While some are egregious usability disasters, like hiding the scroll bar, others points are just a sign of times moving on, like the ≡ for menu.
q92z8oeif··on Apple changes default MacBook charging behavior to improve battery health
Everything that does not expose to the user what is happening, and ideally give the user control over what can happen and when, is as bad design as clippy was on Microsoft Word.

Only too-clever-for-their-own-good-designers like automagic things. No user does.

q92z8oeif··on Opt out of Clearview.ai
Most content on flickr for example, has a non-commercial CC license.

By your logic:

1. train a model with A-list actors' tabloid photos

2. make a CGI feature film

3. ???

Profit!

q92z8oeif··on Shopify CTO: our platform is now handling Black Friday level traffic every day
traffic != sales

The whole industry is experiencing a surge in online-window-shopping. Amazon is probably seeing a few blackfridays increase.

q92z8oeif··on Bolsonaro fires health minister, calls to reopen economy
he did not have it. he claimed he had it, not his doctor.

One of the running twitter jokes, started by a famous comedian over there, is asking for the health minister, now that he was fired, to release the real result for the president's covid19 test.

q92z8oeif··on Apple’s 5-Hour iPhone Ad Takes Viewers on Tour of the Hermitage Museum in Russia
So they are targeting to the kind of people that takes pictures at museums?
q92z8oeif··on A New Kind of Science: A Rare Blend of Egomania and Insanity (2002)
> entrepreneur

I think that's the problem West have. Everyone must be an entrepreneur, which translates to profit and money. Even scientists.

The article mentions Kolmogorov and his work on randomness and how his disciple is more famous for finding useful applications on it. Also another collaborator he only met once at a cybernetics conference in moscow, a 23 year old japanese named Karatsuba, came up with another improvement on his ideas and is responsible for the way our CPUs are able to do fast multiplication to this day. Karatsuba didn't even know his paper was being included in a book by Kolmogorov until he received a pre-print!
