My company (Checkr YC14) has also open-sourced our internal feature flagging microservice named Flagr (Golang).

Hi Nate, Wanted to give you a heads up that I'm seeing a blank screen your "Our story" page. Chrome. No console errors. There is markup in source. https://www.lever.co/our-story

Total Annihilation was great. The big difference for me that made Starcraft superior was the uniquely balanced set of races to choose from. The two factions in TA were essentially mirror images of each other. Starcraft always felt like it had another layer of depth to strategy as a result of the various matchups between races.

I recently switched my old VPS-hosted Wordpress blog to a static site generated by Middleman[1] hosted on Github pages[2]. It's been a really nice way to maintain flexibility of design with a huge boost to performance and improved development/writing workflow. I use markdown so I can even write my articles in a markdown editor if I want to.

The presence of an itinerary for the interviewee should be a requirement. Sadly it's not. I've taken two interviews in the past week where I was in the dark as to what my visit would look like.

Interesting! I started this project a long while ago and I gradually introduced additional features and formats over time after running into performance issues with other file parsers (not Tika). Tika looks like a great solution if you don't mind the Java dependency.

Here's a JRuby wrapper: https://github.com/ricn/rika

I'm also in a similar position where I'd like to store approximately 560k records / user / year. My understanding is that Cassandra doesn't support some useful queries that would be useful when business logic is less clear (like group by)[1]. I'm leaning towards using PostgreSQL with a dedicated write DB until performance becomes an issue.

Google Sunroof proves this theory to be mostly false. Check out 2nd street roofs for example: https://www.google.com/get/sunroof#a=2nd%20Street%2C%20San%2...

I have done the same for my side projects and used cost as excuse to force myself to learn basic devOps.

You might want to look at structuring your pricing in a similar manner to gym memberships given that the product has a similar usage pattern. There was an interesting Planet Money[1] podcast recently that noted that many gym memberships are structured to be yearly contracts ... because people like that idea of putting money down so that they feel committed. You might be able to tap into some of the same psychology.

I think the same could be said for all public domain images published by the government. There must be a tremendous wealth of high quality photos that are hidden away on various agency websites. I've been thinking about creating an aggregation service for this similar to unsplash.com.

This was exactly my reaction after looking at the article. Mastering underwater dolphin kick has been critical to success at the national and international level since the late 1990s.

I've always found the social issues surrounding extending life to be chilling after reading Kurt Vonnegut's take on it in "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomorrow_and_Tomorrow_and_Tomor...). What would a future look like where there is very little room for young people to grow?

I'm writing an abstraction layer in Ruby for scrapping text from documents without the overhead of requiring LibreOffice or Ghostscript. https://github.com/pzaich/doc_ripper

I had the same initial reaction until I realized that you can click through on the gifs and reach a scrollable list.

Here's AirBnB's for example: http://bakztfuture.github.io/startuptimelines/airbnb/index.h...

This looks like the perfect form-factor for a more powerful wearable swim watch. Most of the other options are bulkier or too limited in their feature set. Unfortunately it looks like it's only splash resistant.

Very encouraging to see tests used more sparingly. I was a novice developer when I first tried this tutorial and found myself lost in the weeds when I tried to follow along with rspec. Understanding the difference between rspec and cucumber probably isn't critical at that point. The tutorial made a lot more sense to me after someone recommended ignoring the tests the first time through.

As a soon-to-be dad (in the next few weeks), thanks for posting and sharing!

I found Foursquare to have by far the best meta-data (compared to Google maps, Yelp, TripAdvisor) when living abroad in Asia.

This sounds very similar to what Chariot (https://chariotsf.com/) is trying to do in SF. Filling a gap between MUNI and taxi/uber/lyft?

Stanford tree!

>>>`A lot of people are homeless. Every year I visit it’s increasing. Maybe I am using the wrong streets. I am surprised there’s no startup to fix this.`

https://handup.us/ is tackling the challenge of direct donations to homeless.

I lived in Seoul 2012-2013. Generally I think this post is accurate. Here are some general observations from my time there:

- there's a small but growing startup community growing there who were very welcoming to foreigners.

- you only see web developers with macs. A basic 13" MacBook can cost close to $1800 there.

- already in 2013 there's was a huge surge of people with these larger phones in Korea.

- trends travel very fast in Seoul. riding the subway, you'd see a smartphone game become popular and die out over a 2 week period.

- mass transit is very efficient. Last night I heard Gavin newsome claim that the Bay Area has one of the best mass transit systems in the world. All I could do was laugh.

I wonder how much the financial services industry effects san Francisco's median since a lot of people have to get in prior to the market opening at 6:30 PST.

Sorry I posted from phone. Hopefully a mod can fix the typo.

Who is Keyser Söze?

Check out the Neptune from FINIS. It's designed similarly to jawbone and does require earbuds while you're swimming. Actually works quite well. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00ACP3OOM (disclosure: Used to work for finis a couple of years back)

Valid points. There's a lot of hard work that would need to be done to make a really accurate data set. Sorry for the performance issues. The sites a little overwhelmed wih traffic right now.

I thought about setting that as the default view but would need HTML5 location approval. What were you thinking would be a good call-to-action?

Very cool. I didn't know that freebase existed. The next best source may be some of the sites that have poster prints of art.
