pyzon··on My kid can’t handle a virtual education, and neither can I
I can't help but feel that many of the dismissive comments here must be either from folks without kids, or from people that got lucky with a well-mannered child. You think those good manners were all your amazing parenting? You probably deserve some credit, but I think you also lucked out more than you realize. Haven't you seen parents with multiple kids and those kids have wildly different dispositions?

I urge you to have more empathy with parents and kids. Kids handling remote learning badly is such a pervasive complaint right now that it defies logic that all of these parents are bad parents.

pyzon··on New Corporate Owners Gutted Benefits: How to Deal?
Loyalty in business has not been a thing for a long time. Where there's no loyalty, there's no betrayal. You're right to be angry about being lied to, but lies like this are so commonplace in the business world that I simply assume management is lying to me and do my own assessment of the situation.

Take stock of your entire work situation. Don't just look at pay and benefits, but also intangibles like flexibility, do you like your coworkers, do you like what you're doing, commute time, etc. etc. Once you've done that, decide if the whole package still makes sense or if you're better off elsewhere.

Most importantly IMO, let the anger go and coldly decide what's best for you and what you care about. This wasn't personal. This is simply a result of the political, economic, and cultural system we live in.

pyzon··on 64% of all federal arrests last year were of non-U.S. citizens
This includes a huge number of arrests for crossing the border.

If you ignore immigration crimes, non-U.S. citizens are less likely to commit crimes than U.S. citizens.

Without context, this is a textbook case of lying with statistics.

pyzon··on Preindustrial workers worked fewer hours than today's (2009)
"Wage slave" is a term that should return to the popular vernacular. It very accurately describes the relationship most Americans have with employment.
pyzon··on Ask HN: Fired from first job, now what?
So you got hired straight out of school, and then let go because you weren't fast enough at working with a non-trivial technology that your employer knew (or should have known) you had little experience in? That doesn't seem reasonable to me at all.

My advice would be to not worry about this and simply job hunt as if this didn't happen. You may need to explain the situation to prospective employers. Mismatch between the job you were hired for and the actual job seems like an honest and succinct description of what happened.

pyzon··on Analysis of 10,000 studies on marijuana confirms only three medical benefits
"Only" three? How many should there be?

The phrasing of the title of this article is curious.

pyzon··on Ask HN: HN Devs, to ChatOps or not to ChatOps?
We use ChatOps extensively for a team of 15-20 and it's been fantastic. It makes life easier for devs and devops, and empowers QA and customer support to perform various tasks that they would otherwise need dev or devops assistance with.

We use it for deployment, building, getting status information from various environments, a few escalated customer support tasks, as well as security and monitoring alerts. Security and monitoring alerts above a certain severity level also get delivered other ways.

We're running an old version of Hubot that talks to Slack. It crashes frequently so we have a script that restarts it. It's ugly, but it works. I'm planning an overhaul.

I can't really think of any cons, other than people constantly asking for more plugins/scripts.

One thing that bears mentioning is that our team is Slack-heavy so this is a natural cultural fit for us.

Folks, this is depravity at its lowest. If you're not taking at least a minimal action to stop this, then what do you stand for?

1. Call your senators and representatives.

2. Donate and/or volunteer to one of the many organizations working to stop this.

3. Vote this evil out of office.

pyzon··on How Slack hooks users through artificial urgency
I don't disagree with the article's premise that Slack hijacks your brain, but as someone who worked for a far-flung company that didn't have Slack, and instead relied on email/phone/web meetings, I NEVER want to go back to that.
