pyromaker··on Apple to wind down electric car effort after decadelong odyssey
Was the project Titan - the Apple car project - actually initiated by Apple execs & from the strategic PoV? I read the book "After Steve" [1] and I remember reading a section in which there was a lot of grumbling from employees about how Apple is not working on the latest & greatest R&D project and one of them was self-driving cars. Not sure how "strategic" it was and I guess the question is "What would have Steve done?" My call is he would've never jumped in the car game.

pyromaker··on Should I use a pie chart?
Should you pay ~$10 per year for a domain to send one single message through? (and achieve a frontpage mention on HN) - yeah, I'd say it was worth it.
pyromaker··on Posthog is closing their Slack community in favor of forum
I've been using https://aihackers.ai as my forum for the past few months for my own community (built on HN clone tool) - works very well for me.
pyromaker··on Beeper Mini is now open-source
Bold move! Can Apple just acquire the Beeper Mini team to stop this move? Or they could acquire them to make an official Android iMessaging app.
pyromaker··on All code is technical debt
Ultimately, everything can be debt. If code is technical debt, a HR system or a process that you implement for the company at that particular point in time is also a debt (process debt? HR debt? debt nonetheless).

If we are trying to deliver fast by expediting software development and taking shortcuts (technical debt), another department can also do something similar (quick, our HR process is slow and cumbersome, implement that HR system) - which would solve the particular issues for the business at that particular point in time, but may not the needs of the business later on.

For software, the issue is that we believe we can introduce technical debts, that is, it is permissible to introduce and talk about technical debts. We wouldn't necessarily talk about implementing a new HR system often.

We think writing a line of code is fast (and define what "fast" means) but it isn't.

pyromaker··on Wikifunctions
Will be cool if these functions were available via API endpoints :)
pyromaker··on Show HN: I made a simple platform to buy/sell side projects
I've used SideProjectors in the past. It's probably one of the more established ones.

pyromaker··on Ask HN: Dear Non-tech founders, how do you build MVPs?
I use Newsy to test things out initially. Newsy (https://www.newsy.co) is a tool that converts a domain name into a content-aggregator (i.e. Reddit clone). Here's what I've been doing.

1. I have an idea for an app. I buy a domain name.

2. Usually, I don't have much time to develop the domain. And while I'm doing all the market research, I plug my domain to Newsy. Newsy asks me to fill in some niche keywords which are related to my idea or startup I'm thinking of. So I type in "workout", "weight training", "workout training exercises".

3. Newsy will automatically find contents and create it (here's an example - security related - https://www.getinfosec.news)

4. It comes with sitemap, newsletter, Twitter integration to regularly post tweets. I also let a few of my colleagues know. Over the next few weeks, it builds traffic. It even gets some people sign up as a newsletter subscriber or member on my Newsy site. Sometimes, I post links on Reddit just to kickstart some traffic driving to my site. It works from time to time.

5. I let it run for about 2-3 months. By this time, I have ~30-50 users signed up with real email address. Now I can actually start emailing these users to find out more about the problem space that I want to solve.

Above process has been super interesting - if anything other than to make sure my newly bought domain is being used, not just sitting there idle. Hope that helps someone.

pyromaker··on A better business model for video folks
Tangent, but perhaps related, we've also released something related to a video platform tool called Pyro

https://www.pyro.app

Pyro lets you...

- Create a site with your own domain name

- Find, curate and display videos on your site from multiple sources (YouTube, Vimeo etc) based on keywords that you are interested in (e.g. AI, ML, startup)

- Allow users to sign up and login as a member, submit videos, upload videos (admins can review + approve).

- Build a community based around those videos and scale, members can comment, like, create watch list etc.

pyromaker··on “Older unlisted videos will be made private unless you opt out”
We've been working on a tool called Pyro to move our videos to a different platform

https://www.pyro.app

Also our goal was to create our own video community. Might be an option for others who are thinking about something similar.

pyromaker··on Ask HN: Where is innovation happening now?
I've been looking at some of the trend aggregators for the past few weeks - quite helpful to understand (though perhaps not accruate) what's the latest buzz. :)
