pyfon··on A study of lightning fatalities inside buildings while using smartphones [pdf] (2024)
Gift link still paywalls :?
pyfon··on Making a smart bike dumb so it works again
And not all renting out is rent seeking! On occasion in cities with decreasing home prices, the landlord is subsidising the tenant. That is rare though!
pyfon··on Making a smart bike dumb so it works again
Do a Dell. Sell the laptop. Sell support. This is a win win for customer and business.
pyfon··on Coding as Craft: Going Back to the Old Gym
Yes I do for estimation. If I can calculate requests per minute in my head I saved time.

Also in your analogy the calculator is the compiler :). AI would be someone telling you the numbers to use and you just trust em.

pyfon··on Coding as Craft: Going Back to the Old Gym
This sort if makes me want to learn Lisp. Maybe if every line packs a lot of punch and you need fewer of them, you can do things AI can't do yet. I think AI would struggle with Lisp since in Lisp, you engineer a language for the task. AI tends to be good on languages it is trained on. For now!
pyfon··on AI assisted search-based research works now
I am on holiday now and want something similar. Get me from A to B but with a memorable heuristic that I can use if I leave at any time. E.g. "if you catch a 134 or 175 bus to Kings station then get the metro 3 stops to Cental station.". Even better if you add some landmarks.

This may exclude some clever routes that shave off 3 minutes if you do the correct parkour... but it means I can now put my phone down and enjoy the journey without tracking it like a hawk.

pyfon··on Attacking My Landlord's Boiler
Furry cartoons are catching on.
pyfon··on The 'freaky and unpleasant' world when video games leak into the physical realm
Had to remember not to drive after playing GTA back in the day!
pyfon··on Show HN: Look Busy – Realistic-Looking Fake Calendar Events
Just means he gets a DM "when are you free to..."
pyfon··on Show HN: I built a tool that texts you if your server goes down
Oof! I'd rather be half way through fixing the problem while the customer first discovers it.

Unless you have 1 customer who lives in the same time zone or something.

I'd understand not wanring to be being woken up from a page for a small operation though.

pyfon··on Show HN: I built a tool that texts you if your server goes down
It is crazy you need a seperate service for this :(. Why doesn't the original service treat no data as an alert as well as have a 99.999 slo?
pyfon··on Reworking 30 lines of Linux code could cut power use by up to 30 percent
I'd suggest a submission title change to "...cut networking software power use..."

Not so sexy. But as a force multiplier that's still a lot of carbon probably.

pyfon··on Is 1 Prime, and Does It Matter?
What does primarily look like with the addition operation instead of multiply? 1,2,4,8,...? Or indeed just 1 alone lol! (Yes 1 is there because zero is the additive identity)
pyfon··on Is 1 Prime, and Does It Matter?
That is the first time I thought of 1 as being the product of []

Thay is enough justification for me of 1 not being prime. It has a factorisation!

pyfon··on Astronomers confirm the existence of a lone black hole
More like it eats the dust that brushes pass the front door, but neighbours are safe.
pyfon··on Astronomers confirm the existence of a lone black hole
Yet they detected a lone black hole in the article. Maybe detection isn't guaranteed though?
pyfon··on Blog hosted on a Nintendo Wii
Looks like a design interview round
pyfon··on Regex Isn't Hard (2023)
Not sure what you are asking?
pyfon··on Ask HN: Do FAANG corps have an internal Cursor?
Us too.
pyfon··on Ask HN: How to get my development passion/productivity back?
Because you are human? We weren't meant to work 8 hrs a day from 9-5 based on a clock.

If you are making money don't worry about it I'd say.

Keep a good nest egg savings etc. Enjoy it. You deserve it and more time for your child is a great thing.

pyfon··on Getting forked by Microsoft
Why is it crummy? Open source benefits big tech now. Especially for cloud based stuff.

Only open source it if it fucks big tech. E.g. bittorrent or an alternative browser. Or an app on your local machine as a SaaS alternative.

pyfon··on Fossil fuels fall below 50% of US electricity for the first month on record
Yeah I'd be subsidising panels coming in from China personally.
pyfon··on Getting forked by Microsoft
At this point I'd include some of the code as binary blobs and "pay me for the source!". In addition to GPL!
pyfon··on Regex Isn't Hard (2023)
I strongly agree with [^"] etc. over . and .?

Involves much less thinking!

pyfon··on Better Error Handling
Correct. What errors can happen PLUS how we communicate (and what we do: roll-back transaction? Etc.) PLUS how do we ensure correctness of both (sane programing language, good idioms, testing, proofs etc.)
pyfon··on Pope Francis has died
A good politician is a people pleaser?
pyfon··on Better Error Handling
Observability tools give you this (as long as it can be handled and isn't a straight up panic).
pyfon··on Better Error Handling
Errors often come from the fact that we build on unreliable medium.

Lost packets, high latency, crashed disks, out of memory etc.

You can talk to your users sure but you need to handle this stuff at some level either way. Shit happens!

pyfon··on Why drinking coffee in Iran has become so complicated
Also percolation method (ristreto vs. espresso) and roast date.

Some people say grinder too (I haven't really got into the conical vs. flat)

This is assuming the basics are right i.e. machine temperature and pressure, dialing in, good grinder.

Then if you add milk the provenance and we'll keptness of that is a factor.

pyfon··on Why drinking coffee in Iran has become so complicated
BS. If you are into coffee you can taste different beans. Ironically other than Ethiopian I don't think the origin country itself makes much difference (?) but maybe the farm does and then how it was roasted and when.

Most coffee shops I have been to (not Iran tho) you can order your espresso in 5 sec (after a queue perhaps) but if you want to pick a bean or get cold brew you can do that too.

I'm surprised Iran isn't more into Turkish style coffee though (?)
