pyfon··on I thought I bought a camera, but no DJI sold me a license to use it [video]
There are laws. Get a refund. Tell them why. If we all do this it won't be profitable.
pyfon··on I thought I bought a camera, but no DJI sold me a license to use it [video]
They thought they sold me a camera but no I'll invoke my statutory rights and get a full refund.
pyfon··on Ask HN: Why is there no P2P streaming protocol like BitTorrent?
A bit like peer to peer warehousing to build an Amazon? huge logistics operation vs. a million people in their Prius driving to their neighbours.

pyfon··on Ask HN: How do you talk about past jobs you regret in interviews?
For 2 what do you say if there is some kind of exit contract like NDA.
pyfon··on Which year: guess which year each photo was taken
Oof what! They are like a modern phone camera almost. Much better than 80s film cameras. A lot of work must have gone into that.
pyfon··on Which year: guess which year each photo was taken
4580. Helps if you recognise the current affairs. Gay marriage, Arab spring, London Blitz came up. Leaving me with a party with a mix of drab and 70s disco clothing so I guessed 1981 and was close enough!

The one that got me was some people at a beach in black and white.

pyfon··on Intuit, Owner of TurboTax, Wins Battle Against America's Taxpayers
Looks like a loss leader / marketing giveaway to promote their crypto services?
pyfon··on Don't force your kids to do math
My take is Maths, Science and English push. Everything else let them decide what they like. Do parents push kids at every damn subject?
pyfon··on Vibe Coding is not an excuse for low-quality work
Is breaking API changes how we defeat the killer robots?
pyfon··on Vibe Coding is not an excuse for low-quality work
Looks human written to me. And they didn't use em-dashes when appropriate so that indicates human.
pyfon··on Vibe Coding is not an excuse for low-quality work
Yes not all coding is equal. A bit like not all wordsmithing is equal. A presidential speech is not the same as an airplane safety announcement, even they can both be encoded as words.
pyfon··on Vibe Coding is not an excuse for low-quality work
You are talking about an imagined future not current reality.

An AI will be as flustered by spaghetti as a human. Or not so much flustered it will just make willy willy changes and end up in an expensive infinite loop of test failures and drunken changes to try and fix them.

pyfon··on Claude Code: Best practices for agentic coding
Weird code to have in a modern AI system!

Also 14 string scans seems a little inefficient!

pyfon··on Librarians are dangerous
Maybe true in 1999? But now the library is a tiny fraction of where people get information from.
pyfon··on Consistent Hash Ring
I had a practical use to learn this: design interview prep.

In the real world some platform team does this (or AWS) and then probably one person in that team for one week implements it. Although good for everyone to understand.

You can use it to ensure a request for a user ends up generally at the same node. If that users workload creates state (even if that is cache) then you get a performance win. By using the same server on each request.

pyfon··on Achieveing lower latencies with S3 object storage
How do you do that for an abstract service like S3? I see how you could do that for your own machines.
pyfon··on College Towns: Urbanism from a Past Era
As an aside you can see why it is hard/impossible for a homeless person to pull bootstraps when a successful person can't keep their job living not-even-homeless.
pyfon··on College Towns: Urbanism from a Past Era
They can catch a train from Paris to Berlin (and every disco they'll be in)
pyfon··on I passionately hate hype, especially the AI hype
Missing from the list is the daily march of improved silicon performance through 50+ years.
pyfon··on 15,000 lines of verified cryptography now in Python
Except for countries who hist companies who hold all the endpoints.
pyfon··on AGI Is Still 30 Years Away – Ege Erdil and Tamay Besiroglu
Computers are better at hashing entropy.
pyfon··on AGI Is Still 30 Years Away – Ege Erdil and Tamay Besiroglu
A mirage is not an oasis no matter even if someone knows someone who thinks it is.

Card tricks seem magical too.

pyfon··on Soldiers in combat can kill without moral injury
What is an unnatural act?
pyfon··on Encryption Is Not a Crime
Ok you make good points. Now for the doozy: is thinking (without transcribing for the government) illegal.
pyfon··on Google is illegally monopolizing online advertising tech, judge rules
Turning that on its head, maybe you want something like a 90s shareware lost, curated by someone. Then the games you'd play for free are now ad free (the game is its own ad to get more levels). And you get that curated list. But yeah less money than dialing up ads to 11 while trying to find the whale who'll spend 1000 a week.
pyfon··on Google is illegally monopolizing online advertising tech, judge rules
I'd use the web more without an adblocker if this were the case.
pyfon··on Google is illegally monopolizing online advertising tech, judge rules
Can we get to human or better intelligence through evolution without tribal behaviours?
pyfon··on Google is illegally monopolizing online advertising tech, judge rules
Not only that, username checks out!
pyfon··on Encryption Is Not a Crime
Guantanamo Bay was a thing though. Remember you are not banning all air.

And of course the definition of terrorist is will vary based on what politicians want. US recently sent some "Terrorists" to a gulag for example.
