pxndxx··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
I use Nitter/Xcancel entirely because I don't have an account, and Twitter is now unusable without one. There's still content of some value there. People still link to it and now I can't read what they shared with me.
pxndxx··on Moonshine: Lets you stream games from your PC to any device running Moonlight
The cloud is just someone else's computer. Do you think there's spare GPU compute available during the AI craze?
pxndxx··on Ask HN: Any interesting niche hobbies?
We all find different people weird. You just need to find the weirdos you vibe with.
pxndxx··on JPEG Compression
The details were destroyed long ago by the poor compression, you aren't getting them back either way.
pxndxx··on High-speed train collision in Spain kills at least 39
What course of action would you have suggested?
pxndxx··on How problematic is resampling audio from 44.1 to 48 kHz?
Sampling does not lose information below the Nyquist limit, but quantization does introduce errors that can't be fixed. And resampling at a different rate might introduce extra errors, like when you recompress a JPEG.
pxndxx··on Human Fovea Detector
They are tiny and the ones not on your fovea don't register enough "pixels" for your brain to recognise the rotation.
pxndxx··on Haiku Validator
"wrote" came up as 2 syllables :(
pxndxx··on Haiku Validator
This is a haiku

I need one to test this app

Love the internet!

pxndxx··on I ran Claude in a loop for 3 months, and it created a genz programming language
Some of the keywords are quite sus, but I enjoyed the boolean literals being based/cringe.
pxndxx··on Airbus A320 Poised to Overtake Boeing 737 as Most-Delivered Commercial Airliner
Vueling, the largest airline in Spain is actually shifting from the 320 to an all Boeing 737 MAX fleet in the coming years. I was really sad to hear that given it's size and presence in Europe.
pxndxx··on You can now buy eggs from in-ovo sexed hens
Is this an important distinction? Goose or duck they suffer the same.
pxndxx··on Why English doesn't use accents
Yeah there are multiple accents in Spanish, but each accent is still a 1:1 mapping from written word to pronunciation, there's no enough/through/dough nonsense.
pxndxx··on US Streetlights Are Turning Purple
monochromatic light as emitted by LEDs is quite disorienting.
pxndxx··on In the US, a rotating detonation rocket engine takes flight
Steve Mould has a "rotating flame" video which also helps visualize this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqhXQUzVMlQ
pxndxx··on Launch HN: Miyagi (YC W25) turns YouTube videos into online, interactive courses
Are the people that create the content okay with this?
pxndxx··on Ghost in the machine? Legend of the 'haunted' N64 video game cartridge
Inscryption captured the "videogame creepypasta" genre in an actual, pretty good roguelike video game, if you want more of this!
pxndxx··on BYD launches sodium-ion grid-scale BESS product
I just realised I was writing a thought-out reply to someone named Cumpiler69.
pxndxx··on BYD launches sodium-ion grid-scale BESS product
People do drive to smelly, expensive _gas stations_ to power their gas-powered cars. Having to drive to plug your EV is not worse UX than that.
pxndxx··on Trump wins presidency for second time
He does move his mouth a lot but I wouldn't call whatever sounds he produces "coherent speech"
pxndxx··on Why don't we use awnings anymore (2022)
What? Who mentioned the government paying for them? Who said that the fabric needs replacing often?
pxndxx··on Popular gut probiotic craps out in randomized controlled trial
Yeah but dishwasher soap is a different kind of soap, it's way stronger. Plus dishwashers also use rinse aid which has its own set of problems.
pxndxx··on Gamma radiation is produced in large tropical thunderstorms
what about the eelectric field?
pxndxx··on Common mistakes when using the metric system
That line refers to the 'u' substituting for 'μ', the greek letter mu, not the L symbol. https://www.nayuki.io/page/common-mistakes-when-using-the-me...
pxndxx··on Physicists may now have a way to make element 120
That's just a temporary name (un-bi-nil-ium, meaning one-two-zero-ium) and will be assigned a new name once it's actually discovered and verified.
pxndxx··on How many EV charging stations does the US need to replace gas stations?
the chunnel goes _under the sea_ for 30 miles.
pxndxx··on First pictures from Euclid satellite reveal billions of orphan stars
The long scale is common in French, German and Spanish for example. English usually uses the short scale. The scientific community uses SI prefixes, which aren't part of either scale (you don't say a billion joules which is ambiguous, you either say a terajoule for a long-scale billion or a gigajoule for a short-scale one).
pxndxx··on Industrial Design Student Work: "How Long Should Objects Last?"
From TFA: [...] the assumption of 'less but better' being a superior approach to product design is rarely practically evaluated.

The third umbrella in the series takes durability to an almost cartoon-like level [...]

This was a study of materials and design, not a product someone would like to sell . It's research on object longevity.

pxndxx··on British Placename Mapper
What? It does do regex, and start/end of word, by default. It's the "Anywhere" dropdown.
pxndxx··on Are we at peak vector database?
Euclidean distance stops "making sense" as the number of dimensions goes up: https://stats.stackexchange.com/questions/99171/why-is-eucli...

Cosine similarity measures the angle between two vectors instead, and doesn't suffer from the curse of dimensionality.

I guess it's important to have this in your DB, so you make "nearby" queries (give me text that's similar to this other text) in an efficient way.
