pwarner··on Ebola outbreak in DR Congo rages, with 61% death rate and funding running dry
I think helping control ebola pays a few dividends for the US. It was not completely selfless.
pwarner··on SEC forgives three scammers who bilked Americans out of millions
The market should fix this, but it doesn't appear to be holding these folks to account.
pwarner··on AI won't use as much electricity as we are told (2024)
Hopefully the panic continues and we get a lot of extra electricity, ideally via nuclear, wind, solar - and then if AI is a flop at least we get big progress on global warming.
pwarner··on Fall Foliage Map 2025
I want real time updates from satellite imagery!
pwarner··on Trump to impose $100k fee for H-1B worker visas, White House says
Donations you say?
pwarner··on Trump to impose $100k fee for H-1B worker visas, White House says
There was a proposal for an auction. Highest prices get the visas.
pwarner··on A joint statement from OpenAI and Microsoft
Is someone else launching something next week?
pwarner··on Intel's E2200 "Mount Morgan" IPU at Hot Chips 2025
Presumably all hyperscalers who aren't Amazon could be a customer for this? One of them might be enough to keep it viable. See sibling comment on b Google being a customer for presumably the previous generation.
pwarner··on Intel's E2200 "Mount Morgan" IPU at Hot Chips 2025
Presumably first hire a few developers to program it.
pwarner··on Intel's E2200 "Mount Morgan" IPU at Hot Chips 2025
I believe they have other custom silicon beyond TPUs so it wouldn't be crazy to take this in house if Intel really cans it.
pwarner··on Google scores six-year Meta cloud deal worth over $10B
Meta is planning to spend $65B+ on capex this year. That's a lot of data centers. Why do they need a tiny bit more from Google?
pwarner··on The Folk Economics of Housing
But that's a supply problem. Create the supply, prices will drop and that bubble and generational wealth challenge begins to heal.
pwarner··on Allianz Life says 'majority' of customers' personal data stolen in cyberattack
Presumably this https://cloud.google.com/blog/topics/threat-intelligence/voi...
pwarner··on AMD CEO sees chips from TSMC's US plant costing 5%-20% more

pwarner··on FCC to eliminate gigabit speed goal and scrap analysis of broadband prices
Yeah drawing the right line on what's rural is probably key.
pwarner··on Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and XAI Granted Up to $200M from Defense Department
or not spent by the government? I mean, unless this is for some really specific thing that really needs a push, I think there's sort of enough money flowing this way already, today. (5 years ago, again a different story)
pwarner··on The new skill in AI is not prompting, it's context engineering
It's an integration adventure. This is why much AI is failing in the enterprise. MS Copilot is moderately interesting for data in MS Office, but forget about it accessing 90% of your data that's in other systems.
pwarner··on Marines being mobilized in response to LA protests
OK agreed as others have pointed out there if enforcement in other places. I get the sense, but can't quantity the push seems different by state and city. Perhaps the reaction is different as well.
pwarner··on Honda conducts successful launch and landing of experimental reusable rocket
If I was Japan I'd be interested in some of the "one time use" use cases as well given the current geopolitical state of affairs.
pwarner··on Marines being mobilized in response to LA protests
Exactly The aggressive raids aren't in Florida or Texas, or even California farm county, they're targeting urban areas, and getting the intended headlines.
pwarner··on US Trade Court Finds Trump Tariffs Illegal
Also as someone else noted https://www.bis.doc.gov/index.php/other-areas/office-of-tech...
pwarner··on US Trade Court finds Trump tariffs illegal
There are other avenues, but I think those last tariffs were targeted. Another scenario where executive branch appears to have power, delegated from Congress, to enact tariffs https://www.usitc.gov/press_room/usad.htm
pwarner··on US Trade Court finds Trump tariffs illegal
Congress seems to want a king?
pwarner··on Denmark to raise retirement age to 70
I'm in the US, but I'd be happy if social security ages were pushed out to 75 or 80 but benefits preserved. I'm saving heavily for retirement, but the biggest challenge is figuring out how long you're going to live. If you have sort of a defined and horizon, it's much easier to calculate.
pwarner··on Moody’s strips U.S. of triple-A credit rating
But they lack the power to raise taxes, and print money. Also an army.
pwarner··on Moody’s strips U.S. of triple-A credit rating
Both need to happen, and people hate both. The data makes it clear though, taxes are low, spending is high both in comparison to GDP. Any argument you can do one and not the other is insane.
pwarner··on Wikipedia’s nonprofit status questioned by D.C. U.S. attorney
It was probably Elon
pwarner··on Assignment 5: Cars and Key Fobs (2021)
I believe this was ratified into a standard so it should show up in more new cars. https://carconnectivity.org/car-connectivity-consortium-publ...
pwarner··on Intel, TSMC tentatively agree to form chipmaking joint venture
Parallels to Microsoft investing in Apple in 1997? A little bit maybe? Keep your competitor alive so the antitrust folks don't come down on you?
