pvorb··on Using short lived Postgres servers for testing
If your application only uses one database in production, you probably don't want to use an ORM, because that might prevent you from using all of your db’s features.
pvorb··on ASCII Silhouettify
Those ascii art headers don't look correct on my phone. I'm using Firefox on Android, so that might only affect a limited group of people. But I think it should just be working with a <pre> tag and a monospace font, right?
pvorb··on TimesFM: Time Series Foundation Model for time-series forecasting
I fully agree. The stock market is just a giant machine that pulls money out of systems.
pvorb··on A useful front-end confetti animation library
You call it a trick for performant animation, but I couldn't think of any other way to implement something like this. What would a naive implementation look like?
pvorb··on "Volkswagen" detects when your tests are being run in a CI server
In case anyone is interested in what Volkswagen did exactly in "Dieselgate", I can recommend this talk at the Chaos Communication Congress 2015, that does a technical deep dive: https://media.ccc.de/v/32c3-7331-the_exhaust_emissions_scand...

The talk includes some pretty impressive reverse engineering.

pvorb··on Rotz: Cross platform dotfile manager written in Rust
Perhaps SSH/GPG private keys are .gitignored?
pvorb··on Spotify demonetizes all tracks under 1k streams
It really amazes me how tech companies like Spotify manage to disrupt an entire industry, but fail to find a sustainable business model that makes them profitable. This is far from sustainable and it makes the world worse. There really should be laws that limit how much losses a company may generate during their "disruption" of existing markets.

Yes, I'm aware that I'm commenting this on HN.

pvorb··on Inspectopedia: Analyze code against inspections in your IDE or CI pipeline
And that's the USP of JetBrains IDEs. You don't have to spend days to configure your editor/IDE until it works for you. Just pick the right flavor for your favorite language and start working on your actual code.
pvorb··on Majority of web apps could just run on a single server
How long does it take to figure out there's a problem with your environment and react to the failure? That's likely more than a minute.

And spinning up a new VM typically takes longer than a minute. Even on cloud providers.

pvorb··on Linux Hits 4% on the Desktop
That's basically the same strategy Windows is using to keep you there with WSL.
pvorb··on Linux Hits 4% on the Desktop
Yeah, it's more likely they had a broken version of their tracking scripts on some OS/browser versions.
pvorb··on I don't want anything your AI generates
Your expectations are too high. There might be outcomes where it's hard to tell, but that's already present today. There also will be many more areas where AI's outcomes will be subpar and it will stay this way for a few years.
pvorb··on Why are we templating YAML? (2019)
You were probably thinking of Windows-1252, which is an extension of ISO-8859-1 that supports more European character sets.
pvorb··on Why are we templating YAML? (2019)
YAML is all but human-friendly. It has far too many special features and edge cases for most people. Something simple like Java properties files would solve something like markdown front matter perfectly fine.
pvorb··on More than 100k protest across Germany over far-right AfD's deportation plan
In my experience, newspapers (and other media) are really bad at using hyperlinks. They don't really use them other than a bot linking a few keywords here and there to their internal category pages.
pvorb··on More than 100k protest across Germany over far-right AfD's deportation plan
You know, in Germany we have a few articles in our constitution to prevent history from happening again. You might have learned in school that we had some bad experiences not so long ago. There's no article that requires institutions to "maintain neo-liberal world order".
pvorb··on More than 100k protest across Germany over far-right AfD's deportation plan
I absolutely agree. I was also very disappointed by the many far-right statements and symbols I saw on signs. Sure, it might not have been the majority, but I can't understand how you're able to join these protests if you don't agree with the others' statements.
pvorb··on More than 100k protest across Germany over far-right AfD's deportation plan
There are not that many farmers, though, and tractors are relatively slow. If you consider that, the impact of those protests was quite high.
pvorb··on Flattr is closing down (2023)
I somehow link this practice to the Brave browser, but I'm not sure about it. Does anyone know more about it?
pvorb··on Which word begins with "y" and looks like an axe in this picture? (2017)
That axe managed to kill some time.
pvorb··on Wind turbines are friendlier to birds than oil-and-gas drilling
That's my take. I like animals, so I decided to not own any of them. I wonder how people manage to love their animals and remove them from their natural environment.

I know that we've come a long way and pets have had humans around them for ages, but to me it still feels like we're doing them harm. I know that nature is even harder, but it's not like pets decided to live that way.

It's also hard to understand why people love one species, but also breed others on an industrial level, so they can eat them more easily.

Probably going to get a few downvotes for this.

pvorb··on Golden Rules of Interface Design (2013)
I can't tell which browsers or UI libraries do this, but do you know those date pickers that try to maintain a valid date with every keypress? It's such a horrible user experience if you try to type a date by hand.

pvorb··on Coal and fossil fuel use in Germany at a record low for electricity in 2023
I'd agree if only we had more time to solve the upcoming challenges. But currently it looks like no one's going to be strong enough to do the right things. Four years are a lot of (wasted) time in the short period we have left.
pvorb··on Coal and fossil fuel use in Germany at a record low for electricity in 2023
Oh, I'm sorry. I took "total energy consumed" too literally. You've been right and my comment doesn't make that much sense for electricity.
pvorb··on Coal and fossil fuel use in Germany at a record low for electricity in 2023
I think it's differentiating waste that is burned in two categories: food and plant-based waste, which is renewable, and everything else that comes from non-renewable sources. But that's only a guess because those are typically the categories for waste separation in Germany.
pvorb··on Coal and fossil fuel use in Germany at a record low for electricity in 2023
My parent's comment was about total energy usage.
pvorb··on Coal and fossil fuel use in Germany at a record low for electricity in 2023
And that's in a current political situation with three parties in the government that disagree all the time. Imagine what could be done in more stable times!

The huge issue I see is that they fail to implement enough social balancing, which leads to more and more people voting for the extreme right wing party AfD, which will cause a lot of trouble after the next elections.

pvorb··on Coal and fossil fuel use in Germany at a record low for electricity in 2023
And because of the mild weather in the winter season 2022-2023. Also, private households are saving on energy as much as they can because of high prices.
pvorb··on Coal and fossil fuel use in Germany at a record low for electricity in 2023
A huge problem with the German coal phase-out by 2038 ("ideally by 2030") is that the law doesn't prohibit exporting coal. So with every coal plant that's shut down, coal becomes cheaper and will be burned by someone else.

We're doomed.
