puzzlepursuer··on Researchers train an algorithm to interpret pig grunts as emotions
Replying to this for visibility. Curious why this submission reached the front page.

I’ve linked prior posts on the same topic, including my own. Does time of day affect ranking that much, or perhaps there’s an algorithm at work? The person who posted this article has >30 submissions over the past week. Maybe people recognizing a username has a big influence too.

What was the forum that helped get you into programming?

Regarding slack, you need an account right? Do you have one through work?

puzzlepursuer··on Ask HN: How do I help my 6yr old learn robotics and coding?
Great job, it's obvious you're happy to see him succeed and sounds like he's enjoying the process.

A reminder to think about spending time playing basketball or soccer with him and enrolling him in a league for a couple years, in case you aren't and if he isn't already playing. Two or three youth seasons participating in a team sport that involves constant decision making will benefit him in the future, even if he decides he doesn't like the sport.

puzzlepursuer··on Ask HN: Who is your favorite CEO and why?
Melissa Butler and Yvon Chouinard are two who stand out. There are many more, but if you're looking for people to inspire you they might do so. Both seem to be deeply considerate people and their forays into business are interesting.

Melissa Butler founded The Lip Bar while working on Wall St. Watch her TED talk.

Yvon Chouinard founded Patagonia. He's passionate about being outside and wanted to create the most ideal products for exploring nature.

I meant for you. How much time are you spending on them regularly and what's your total annual expenditure?
puzzlepursuer··on Why some people can deal with the cold
A question formed while reading this article. I was going to email a college professor, but I think there are probably folks on HN who know the answer, and my guess is that other people have a similar question. The article is about a mutation linked to cold weather climates and should take readers with an average level of English proficiency <13 minutes.

The study cited in the article uses data from “healthy young males 18-40 years old.” Are there studies trying to discover whether mutations have to occur by a certain age and in the absence of specific environmental conditions those mutations won’t initiate?

An example loosely based on the article would be to imagine someone lacking α-actinin-3 was born and grew up in Miami. Raised by her single mom, they rarely had extra money to travel. Occasionally they would visit family in Jamaica. After attending a local community college she earns a scholarship to Berkelee College of Music or MIT. She’s now 20 years old and has only spent time in warm climates before experiencing winter in Boston. Will the mutation fail to express itself?

If you don't know the answer, but know where to look or someone who might, please direct us.

Thanks for sharing.

The level of detail enabled by technology is always remarkable. Check out figure 15 in the geospatial section "restricted sea zones based on wave height." The diligence to create something like this is laudable as well.

I'm glad you've maintained a passion. If you're familiar with any good pieces of info regarding the environmental consequences of hydrogen vs. electric cars, please share any and all. Specifically of interest would be info on precious metals and the production of vehicles. Energy conversion efficiency info is easier to find.

puzzlepursuer··on Tracking the San Francisco Tech Exodus
A delayed response, however it should be noted that the comment above is indicative of someone who isn't trying to contribute or improve anything.

SF has peaked? What do you mean, like the price of a crypto coin or a stock?

Your comment suggests that you first moved to SF sometime in the past eighteen months expecting to discover a get rich quick scheme and now consider yourself an expert on the place. It's possible you're merely <30 and lack context. Perhaps all the aforementioned hypotheses are true.

"Longtime" SF/BA residents have observed an influx of treasure seekers arriving with schemes to earn fortunes since the mid 2000s. If you ask a majority of those longtime residents they would likely tell you that certain things "peaked" in 1998.

You could also go back to the 1970s and 80s when Apple was in its infancy, or when HP was founded in 1939. Residents living then might've given you a different "peak." Of course you could go all the way back to the 1800s and I'd wager that a majority of indigenous peoples felt SF peaked prior to the arrival of Europeans. You can find people who still believe that now if you're curious enough.

The point is that making a comment like yours is unproductive because cities/regions are constantly evolving. Again, probably the majority of longtime residents are hoping SF and the BA will "peak" when the people who moved to the region looking for a quick buck move elsewhere.

Sorry to be confrontational, but when you attack a region or city then you better not miss. If you're always focused on looking for negatives in a place, person, or idea then you'll always be able to identify something to criticize.

Thanks. From the thread you suggested, this too covers some of the topics https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20023209

I know there have been at least a handful of similar threads over the past two years. But a lot has changed since then, except the main websites in discussion.

Later this week I may reconsider how to frame the question, while providing some positives and negatives of each of the major sites to help initiate a conversation. HN appears to have much more activity during the standard work week and I didn't consider that before posting.
